    So a couple buddies and i are wanting to play some songs for a festival this July and we are thinking about playing afterlife. I would call myself an intermediate player and i know 40% of the solo already but it isn’t nearly up to speed. I know how to sweep (granted Im not very fast at it yet), economy pick and alternate pick which i think are the only techniques used in the solo. I guess my question is to anyone who learned how to play the solo, how long did it take you to master it? I know everyone is going to learn at different speeds but Im just looking for a ballpark answer.

    Go ahead and give it all you got! I think some other students on here that I have spoken with said they got it down fairly well in about 3 to 4 weeks of solid hard practicing for several hours A-day and that was all they practiced. However, they play it sitting down and playing it standing up it is far more difficult. I think you should go for it anyway! On the parts that are too difficult for you you can always change it up a little bit and do something a little more easier.

    Four and a half months is a pretty good amount of time to get comfortable with a piece… That being said, it’s also not the easiest piece! You can do it though. If I were doing it, I would break the solo down into four bar segments and spend a few days just getting that under your fingers, then getting it clean and up to speed before tackling the next segment. I’d also say that practicing it with a minimal amount of distortion/gain would be good to really dial in the technique. It’ll seem WAY easier to play once you start turning the gain up, but knowing you can pull it off without really helps you (or me, at least) feel more confident.

    Go for it. Hell make it 100% your own solo. Shouldn’t have to play it 100% like syn. You dont even have to sweep it.. I dont think I did when I started out. Tried to make it an alternate picking lick. Might sound better too. I bet nonine noticed any difference when you play it.

    I think you can do it l! If you can sweep and alternate pick decent enough you should be fine for the solos. For me I already new how to sweep and could go pretty fast so I think I learned the whole song in 1-3 hours(also because I kind of don’t like to take notes to be super exactly the ones that are played)

    Well it’s a huge accomplishment to play it his way. Theres serious licks in that solo. Knowing the theory behind how syn plays it is very helpful.im just saying dont be afraid to make it your own too. Lots will say it should sound like the original 100%. I’m.not against doing my own thing.
    See paranoid. I’d actually love to hear syns mind process behind that one.

    Try hard bro. if you find it’s too difficult to catch up the speed, change the licks, make it your own solo but not too different to the original. Anyway, if you are going to play in front of a crowd that don’t really know about guitar and stuff, some minor mistakes are no problem. There was a time when I practiced playing Canon Rock, I just could play about 50-60% well of the whole song and my dad asked me to play it for our family party, I did shredding and sweeping pretty sloppy and even played kind of jamming licks but when I was done, the guests congratulated me like I’m a guitar master
