Why you should not strive for the perfection of YouTube Guitarists

I am SO GLAD someone did this. As I’m always trying to tell people, you are trying to be a guitarist not a videographer. People spend more time editing their videos than actually playing.

@Ed that was some great enlightenment!
I do tend to worry so much about the quality of my guitar covers/Improvisations, and sometimes forget to actually apply that new lick that i have learnt the other day.
And that is not thaaaat bad, but you should take a look at what really matters.
I mean, everyone makes mistakes, and that is a natural thing to do.
A lot of people seek perfection, even myself. But i believe that when you can play that song you like, or achieve a certain level on vibrato, you upgrade your videos by 60% AT LEAST, because you are being confident and yourself.
And that it is what really matters.
Thanks again for sharing that
It is awesome

Good stuff here Ed, Excellent post! I feel like these YouTube guitarists can be harmful in discouraging folks. They see these videos and go, “I’ll never be as good as that person” and discouragement like that can be enough for some folks to set the guitar down for good. Again, fantastic post!

Yeah, this is one of those cases where the expression “your only competition is you” should be used. Not saying you can’t look at others to see where you’d want to go, but watching YouTubers isn’t really the way I’d do things.
On a side note, the person who created the video chose an amazing song to cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlprozGcs80 . Might be one of the best pieces of music I’ve ever heard.

Most guitar skills are in the basics. With just basic music theory and some chords, you can play amazing songs. Most youtube guitarists just flaunt their ability to completely and utterly destroy their songs with pitch correction, virtual peddles, and god forbid electronic effects.
That’s not to say all of them. Just a lot of them.
