    For those that have never tried before, brand name strings do sound/feel a bit better than cheapo strings on my electric. I went from artist guitar generic 9's to ernie ball slinky's and it does make a difference, not nearly as much as on my accoustic, but still, they feel well.. slinky.. :)

    So if you are having issues muting the smallest string when you are playing chords, I'd say your thumb position is too high, if you lower your thumb a bit behind the neck, you will find the is more room for your fingers to curl. Yes this is completely different to what I showed in the picture...

    I use my thumb over the top to mute the 1st string. It just has to touch the top of the string to stop it making noise.

    in short, you're never too old.. I'm older :) Where this comes in handy is when you are playing a song or soloing and you will be able to hear when you are on the right note(s) because it will "sound" right.
