The Synyster Gates Shirts Are 😱😱!!

Like everything else, something as simple as T-shirts is taking longer than expected. Syn, me, & the rest of the team are ONLY interested in things done right. We had the option of throwing together some quick (cheap) T-shirts & hoodies, but we all agreed that QUALITY is the most important...

    Jazz

Learn some simple basic jazz chords; Maj7, Maj9, 6, ,9, 13, min7, min9. Then learn some altered chords, min7b5, +7, 7b5, 7+9, 7b9. Learn a couple of simple standards using these chords. Like “Autumn Leaves”. This song is so great because it involves II-V-I in both major and minor. For instance...

More Advice Needed. Trying To Be A Jack Of All Trades.

YES! YES! YES! I started out by ear when I was a kid playing classic rock stuff; blues, etc. Then I discovered jazz when I was about 14. I still played rock while I was studying jazz with Ted Greene & Joe Pass. But those jazz licks started to make my rock playing stand out from other players...

    Ask Papa Gates.

Hey All, Hope you are enjoying the site and learning some cool stuff. I get a ton of personal messages asking me really great questions and I was thinking it would be nice if they could be shared with everyone here. So, with that in mind – I thought it might be fun if I did a video answering...

I think we should be more open about music in general

Art is very much like life. People change. Nobody wants to repeat what they have done. Even if you had a GREAT time in Jr High school (secondary school) – do you want to go back and do it again? Of course not. You want to explore and conquer new territory. Bands who draw from the same well over...

Having a hard time economy picking

lol. Eco picking took me two years – and I practice everyday. As with everything, play it with a metronome at an annoyingly slow BPM. NO! SLOWER! Then practice at that speed longer than you want to. NO! LONGER! Bump it up two or three BPM the next day and repeat. Do it everyday for a half-hour...

Is it ok to wrap your thumb round the neck?

Depends on what you’re playing. I wrap my thumb around a lot for chords. Speedy stuff really requires that the thumb be behind the neck. Everything good and worthwhile feels uncomfortable at first. I practiced eco picking for 2 years before I used it in public. Shit takes times. Wish I had...

    Some Friendly Advice Needed

Thanks Jak – I am most definitely a much better player because of my son. I would like to think that some of me has rubbed off on him as well.

    Some Friendly Advice Needed

This thread makes me so happy. This is why this school exists. There are a ton of places where you can go to be abused by “better” guitarists. I feel your pain, Jak. EVERY SINGLE TIME I pick up a guitar in public, I am compared to my son. We have completely different styles and philosophies when...

Fractal Axe fx and AX8 users

As Ed said – 90% of what you want to spend your time on is amp & cab. Then Low & High pass filters. After that, it’s just dressing it up. I would also suggest you don’t overdo the effects. In a recording, most effects (reverb, etc.) are added after the fact. If you add too much up front, your...

this goes to acoustic guitar players

I would suggest western steel string. It is much more versatile for rock, pop, etc. Nylon string guitars are more geared to classical, flamenco, bossa nova, etc. And a Gypsy guitar pretty much just does Gypsy.

favorite song zacky has played on?

Too many to mention. Zacky is a beast. Best tone EVER. My sentimental fav is Unholy Confessions. It is the quintessential Z at his best.

    Thoughts About Syn's Playing Evolution?

I listen to A LOT of guitarists, and speaking as a fellow guitarist and not a dad: He started out great, (obviously). But as he grew as a musician (and person) and started listening to players like Holdsworth & Django, his playing went to a whole new level. Harmonically, as well as technically...

    Anyone fans of the Beatles

This thread makes me happy. Recorded one of my albums at Abbey Road. Played all The Beatle keyboards & used their mics. Crazy to be able to play the “A Day In The Life” piano and use the “Yesterday” mic.
