Something that Syn did in a jam I don't really understand

The changes are Em to Am. He is playing lots of simple substitutions. Over the Em, he is playing Em7, Esus2, Em9, Em11, and also using some open string variations to make it sound a bit more ethereal. Same over the Am; m7, m9, m11 with some open strings to spread it out a bit.

    Question about CAGED system

Thank you, Ids! Yeah – we’re just trying to stay in the same general area on the fretboard so we don’t jump around so much.

    Axe FX

It’s definitely a game changer. Other than the Kemper – I haven’t heard anything even close, (and I prefer the AxeFX). I have used it extensively in the studio and I defy anyone to tell it’s not a real amp being mic’d. Amp sim pedals ALWAYS have a certain amount of fizz when you get them too...

    Memorizing Half-diminished scales

No. A Locrian scale is the same as the major scale a half step above it. So a B Locrian scale has the same notes as a C Major scale. Technically, the half-dim scale is a Locrian with a natural 2nd – as opposed to a regular Locrian which has a flatted 2nd. The half-dim scale is the 6th mode of...

    Harmonizing a guitar lead

Syn & Zacky have always hated perfect 5ths when harmonizing. So invariably they end up play major & minor 3rds – above and below. Let’s stick with above for now to make things easier. Record a C scale – CDEFGABC. Now play EFGABCDE over it. Those are minor & major 3rds – depending on where you’re...

I need an expert on this one.

I’ve never really thought about it before, but I’ll weigh in. Legato in classical music means that one note flows smoothly into the next. No gaps in between notes. We guitarists have bastardized that into meaning “one note flowing smoothly into the next” AND not using a pick, i.e. hammer ons &...

My Addiction To Alternate Picking? (Syn, PG Advice Would Be Amazing)

Yeah, that sounds like economy to me. Which makes sense, considering Syn economy picks 95% of the time. At least he used to. Anytime you have 3 notes per string when playing really fast, it makes sense to economy pick.

    Papa Gates' Guitar Collection

I’m posting pics of my guitars on Instagram for those interested. First up is my reproduction of George Harrison’s “Rocky” strat. His was a sonic blue ’61. Mine is a sonic blue ’65. I had a friend paint it exactly like the original – down to the nail polish on the knobs. Great sounding guitar...

    What defines gypsy jazz

Gypsy Jazz guitar was invented by Django Reinhardt. It has a complete different set of rules (and a different sound) from any other form of jazz. It has to do with chords, rhythms & note choices, BUT ALSO it owes much of it’s sound to the type of guitar used and how it is played. A Gypsy Jazz...

Lesson 10 question for papa gates or syn

No worries. I always get confused in drop D. You just compensate by moving up 2 frets. Simple. But somehow, at some point I end up compensating by moving down 2 frets. lol

Who taught you to play Papa gates?

Almost forgot – I also studied piano with Mike Garson. A jazz great and David Bowie’s piano player back in the 70s. Learning piano was probably the best thing for my guitar playing and my career. When I do session work – half of what I do is on keys. Some straight up piano and a lot of sampled...

Who taught you to play Papa gates?

I was self-taught for the first few years I played. I think the first book I had was a Bob Dylan book with chord symbols. After that, a Beatles book with chords. Then I started transcribing stuff off of records by ear – Hendrix, Clapton, etc. That lasted for about 5 years or so until I took my...

Lesson 10 question for papa gates or syn

This little exercise is played on the 5th, 4th & 3rd strings, so drop D has nothing to do with it. If you want to add the low E string, you could. In the key of A you would play the 5th & 8th frets. The 5th fret would be your tone center. In drop D you would just move those notes up 2 frets to...

Im kinda nervous, I'm going to talk to syn

Hi Andrew! He is EXTREMELY chill and easy to talk to. Get the fan thing out of the way as quickly as possible. “Thank you so much for this opportunity and I love the way you play.” Done. Then get to work. What do you want to learn from him? Have some questions ready for him. WRITE THEM DOWN...
