    session guitarristY/Pro Stuff

Depends on what you mean by professional. There are a ton of ways to make a living playing guitar. If you mean in a band, then I would say – play well with others. Compliment the band and understand what your job is. At every moment of every song there is a focal point. You have to KNOW what...

    Recording software recommendations

The gold standard for professionals is still ProTools, but it is pricey, (with a good interface). I’m starting to see Logic Pro used in studios. Since Yamaha bought Cubase, it’s actually making a nice comeback – after 20 years of being kind of a joke. I know a few die-hard Ableton Live users as...

What do you guys like most about the school?

Ironically, Syn is more slammed with stuff when he is home. In addition to family, he has a ton of meetings, interviews, rehearsals, etc. When he’s on the road, all he has to worry about is doing the show. I think we’ll actually see more of him as soon as the tour starts! I can tell you he is...

What is your opinion on attending a music college ?

Both great schools! Syn and my daughter went to MI and loved it. I know several people who have gone to Berklee and loved it as well. GREAT teachers and programs at both schools.

    Playing guitar and singing

There is a reason why most guys who sing are the rhythm players and not the soloists. (There are exceptions – including me). I have made my living singing and playing. Over the past few years, I have made more of a living as a singer than a player. The FIRST and most important thing people will...

    Economy pick or alternative pick??

Hey Pablo, They are both important. There’s no harm working on both at the same time.

    Holding The Pick: Advanced

I’m getting a ton of feedback about the lesson on holding the pick, (Lesson 4). For those interested, I go much deeper into the way Syn holds the pick in Lesson 73. Check it out!

    Memorizing scales

If you consider that there are 7 shapes to every 7 note scale, e.g. Major & its modes, melodic minor + its modes & harmonic minor + its modes. You end up with 147 scales. Lots of these are repeat shapes, but it’s still absolutely daunting! My suggestion is to learn one major scale pattern and...

    Acoustic Tuning Help

Unfortunately, some guitars are not in tune with themselves. Electric guitars can be adjusted, but acoustics are what they are. It actually sounds pretty close. You may just have to live with it being slightly out of tune until you can get a nicer one.

    Playing with a metronome

Hey Zé, Set your metronome so 1 is always accented. Most metronome apps allow you to set it to quarter notes, eighth notes, etc. So at any tempo or time signature, you should always know where 1 is.

    Is CAGED really that bad?

The whole idea of CAGED is that the positions are meant to be linked. It gives you the freedom to navigate the entire fretboard in any given key as well as stay in the box. But if you think you can only stay in one position – you are missing the whole point of it. It’s a tool that works...

    Changing strings

Coated strings definitely last longer. Cleaning your strings after you play certainly helps them last longer. If I’m doing shows – i change my strings every other show. If I’m doing session work – every day. For practicing purposes, I would say once a month would be fine. The problem with old...

    Beginner Guitar & Amp Recommendations

Hey Guys (and Girls) I’m getting a lot of requests to recommend inexpensive (but still playable) beginner practice amps & guitars. I’m partial to Squire Strats & Epiphone Les Pauls. Also Yamaha Acoustics. All of these are in the 200 dollar range. What are your thoughts?
