    Nothing.

Calvin. Broski. Let me get one thing out there. For all the love folks show me, there's something deep down y'all need to accept about me regardless. As a native New Yorker, I can be brash. I can be opinionated. I can be, in short, an asshole. That in no way diminishes the awesomeness I can...

    Learning new riff...technique advice

I'm old and my ears don't work like they used to (wear earplugs at concerts and band practice, folks!), so maybe I wasn't hearing what you are. I also didn't have the volume up because I was the only one in the house awake when I watched it.

    Learning new riff...technique advice

Gain, honestly (or distortion). Gain and distortion involve heavy amounts of compression which makes everything quiet much louder. Without any kind of noise gate, you just need to learn how to roll off your volume whenever you're not playing.

    Learning new riff...technique advice

Just getting to this. Love that Strat! Great song - I need to look up The Offspring again. They had some great stuff. The part you're asking about is definitely alternate picked and not muted. It has a great, clean flow to it and almost "swings" a little, which is kind of an important part of...

    Amp advice

Yes, it is. Single best and most transformative piece of gear I've ever bought.

Sunday thought to encourage other students

EXACTLY! I was gonna say something, then saw his response and did a quick "not needed" in my head.

    What Ed Said

Thanks, PG! I didn't know whether to "love" or "laugh" emoji your post because, like so many things you say - there's a lot of genuine heart in it, but you also make it funny. I'm honored to be in such company as you, Junior, Jak, and all of the brilliant people here, young and not-so-young. I...

How long does it take to become good(advanced)

Don't be discouraged by Syn. In part, he's just being humble, but he's also acknowledging that he will always be a student of guitar, always working to get better and be better. It is certainly not to suggest that anyone not as his level is full-on "beginner," and I *absolutely* know he did not...

    Amp advice

When I want it out loud (which is mostly just at band practice, gigs, or if someone in the house wants to hear me play), one of the outputs runs to a JBL Eon-12 powered PA speaker. Since I use the full amp and cab modeling, all I need is FRFR (Full Range, Flat Response), which an ordinary PA...

    Should I start learning solos?

You could always start here, with our good friend Hector. https://www.soundslice.com/slices/Xl1Vc/

    Amp advice

I have an MT-15 and an AxeFX2XL+. Love 'em both. If the question is Kemper or AxeFX, I will say this - People with Kempers are still out there buying amps, and some even move away from the Kemper and back to amps eventually. Nobody ever goes back from AxeFX that I have seen.

Return of the Son of Shooga Googa Goonga

Nope. But Metalback (Five Finger Death Punch) had a new album out yesterday. It's not awful.

Return of the Son of Shooga Googa Goonga

This is an old Dweezil Zappa tune that he and some friends did "Bill and Ted" style guitarist talk over. It has its moments, though some of it might be too dated for some of the younger axe-slingers here. The album was called "Confessions" and had guest appearances from a who's who of shred...

    General guidelines for mixing

You can low pass the guitars at somewhere between 5k and 8k to help with the fizziness. Bass guitars definitely do well with compression, but I wouldn't know how to suggest it. Place things in the stereo soundfield to give them their own space, too. Drums pan out from center, bass down the...

Trivium - Catastrophist - What The Dead Men Say

And THAT is a BIG problem for me.
