    Help!

It’s very subtle, but you can see his right foot move a little before a change, and “tap” at every change. He’s got a foot pedal underfoot, I believe.

Rate this tone out of 10

Sounds really good and polished. I’m not gonna rate it. Guitar tone is subjective, and really – all about the PLAYER. 99% of non-guitarists think almost all guitar tones sound the same. So why do we chase tone? Because we’re looking for the sound that makes us play better – not physically...

    How Is Everyone Doing?

I am. I lack the tenacity to play such a long game, but when she’s done (hopefully another 4-5 years) she will make as much as I do (maybe a little more) and then we can take the kids and travel the world through our 50s!

    How Is Everyone Doing?

@jak – not a writer, a student. She’s wrapping her bachelor’s degree this semester and then going on to her Masters and beyond in the medical field. She’s working on her senior thesis, CV and “personal statement” right now.

    How Is Everyone Doing?

SF Bay area is good 4-6 hour drive from HB, based on traffic (after I met Syn this summer in HB, we continued our drive up to the SF Bay area for the night).

    How Is Everyone Doing?

I’ve been busy this week mostly helping my wife. It’s been crunch time for her with some school stuff, and I proof most of her writing, among other things, so that’s had me busy. I started experimenting with heavier strings some time ago, and I think I may have gone too far. For decades, I was a...

    How Is Everyone Doing?

@ethan, that’s AMAZING, but be aware that the San Francisco Bay area is literally one of the most expensive places in the world to live right now, so make sure the pay is appropriate – even if you think, “wow, I never thought I’d ever make that much money in my life!” it still may not be enough...

Synyster Gates School Report Project (Jak's June Contest)

Harry is spam for Duraflex. Link right there in the “quote.” Clever, but still spam.

    Pick resistance and smooth movements

Without seeing an up-close example, I can only give general advice. First, your goal with each movement is not to “hit the string.” Your goal is to “move through the string” to get your pick to the other side in a straight line. Subtle difference, but the way you THINK about it has a measurable...

    Syn's Epic Solo

I’d definitely like to hear more of his own writing, but as far as soloing goes, it’s pretty clear he has carte blanche from the band to play lead wherever he pretty much wants to. I mean, they may vote on whether something sounds good or right together, but that’s a GOOD thing. An Avenged...

Fall in love with this style (I think you never heard it)

Nice. Sounds like a lot of Spanish and folk influence in there, which makes sense. I prefer the other Portuguese guitar player. 🙂

    Advice From Papa Gates

I see people posting ” Oh, I was practicing these 5 things for an hour at a time…” and I’m like, wow, family and career eat one HELL of a lot of my time. I’ve made big changes to prioritize making sure I can almost always get roughly an hour a day. I also lack the focus to work on ONE THING for...

    Tips for playing and standing

Practice standing up. Always. I learned that decades ago, and it’s an important lesson for any rock guitarist who wants to ever gig, or even jam with a band. You WILL get used to it!

How I can be like syn

It all starts with the right guyliner. Just kidding – practice, knowing what you want, and learning from your heroes while forging your own path and distinct voice.

    Advice From Papa Gates

Great video, and Papa’s point #3 gets me especially good! Thanks for sharing, Jak! And BIG GRATS on the scholarship thingie, too!

    Suggestions on pickups

I would not recommend the Blackouts, only because converting a guitar from passive pickups (most of them) to actives (EMG, Blackout, Fluence) is a bigger task requiring additional hardware and steps. If you’re doing the work yourself, do a like-for-like replacement and go with passive pickups...
