    Advice for creating solos

And it’s not your iPad – the site’s Russian and Korean gremlins took down post liking in the last Spam War. Techs are still working on it.

    Advice for creating solos

Couple of approaches to start the process. You can look at keys and modes that work with your riff, and try to come up with a melody or theme that you like, then go from there. You can take a melody already in the song, and twist and turn the notes and everything around so it’s “in the family”...

    Whats your favorite pick?

@Firsty – those are another variation on Ultex, which is seeming to be becoming the go-to for boutique picks, and I totally see why. I’m loving the material. It sounds good, FEELS great, and lasts forever. Definitely going to continue to experiment with Ultex picks – not even looking at other...

    Honesty.

Yes, the backing track. Play it again and count along. You’ll feel it.

And I’m not sure if you’re aware, but this is in 3/4 (or 6/8) time. Where a lot of music is in 4/4 and you would count like this: ONE-two-three-four-ONE-two-three-four The 3/4 or 6/8 is counted like this: ONE-two-three-ONE-two-three or, if it’s mentally easier...

Thanks for trusting us, Billy. You’ve got some nice note choices here and some cool phrasing. Improv is hard, and you’re doing fine with it. One thing I would suggest is that for any note you stay on for a bit, SOME FORM of vibrato should be your default. It’s okay to just sit on the note...

Safe travels! Nowhere near there, but enjoy!

As for HOW, post it to YouTube or Vimeo (you can make it viewable “by link only” so it doesn’t come up in searches or show up on your account page) and then link it here and in the Riffs section.

Yo Billy! You’ll get shit from people on all corners of the internet EXCEPT here. You’ve found your safe space. A lot of our friends here have opened themselves up, bravely stepped out of their comfort zones, exposing their vulnerabilities, and are glad they did so here. It can be very rewarding...

    Fingerpicking, any advice?

Also, there are a LOT of ways to hold the pick. Check out the following video (and many others from Troy Grady about the mechanics of playing) to see a sampling of common pick grips. I’ve tried to do it like Papa explains Syn does. It’s no bueno for me. There are many comfortable options. Find...

    Fingerpicking, any advice?

Mark Knopfler is a master rock player and he only ever uses his fingers. It can be done, but it might be harder if metal is your goal. You’ll just have to forge your own metal. If you’re good with that, keep on truckin. If you want to be able to play in styles like most or all metal players...

    Meet Your New Keymaster!

There’s an old saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Jak, you’ve been dressing for this job since day one. Keep kicking ass, Gozer.

    Whats your favorite pick?

I still consider myself to be picksperimenting. For roughly 25 years, it was the Dunlop Jazz Stubby 2.0mm. For a bit, they became harder to find, and I was afraid I’d have to change overnight, so I started looking around. What I’m using right now is the piss-yellow Dunlop Ultex Jazz III. It’s...

    The Power of Kick Snare

My earliest demos (late 80s, early 90s) were programmed on a Roland TR-707. That shit was a pain in the ass. Now I use EZDrummer, the easier, cheaper version of Superior Drummer. I need to get some demos going again soon. I haven’t written and recorded anything to completion in years… This is...

Up and coming guitar company to watch closely!

I’ve certainly gotten a few top quality guitars from smaller builders lately, and loved them – I’ve got an Ormsby out of Australia that’s to die for and a one-off built by Nate Perle that gets a lot of love on Insta, so let me know how it is once you get it. If they’re top-quality instruments...

Unable to learn any faster solos?

Just bookmarked ALL of those fuckin things, as I am finally feeling like diving into this song. I got the intro up to about 70% speed yesterday, getting it under my fingers, but want to watch through your tutorial to see if there are good bits I missed. Then the solo…
