    Fret Buzz

Okay, if it is below the 15th fret but NOT above, then your bridge (floating or not) is fine. What you need to do is loosen the truss rod. This can usually be found under a plastic cover at the headstock end of the neck. Remove the cover, and you’ll see a large hex (six sided) screw. Your guitar...

    Fret Buzz

First question: Is the buzz above or below the 15th fret?

    Thumb Position issue

“Proper” position is with the thumb behind the neck, either dead-center or a little closer to the thick strings. HOWEVER, and this is a BIG however, that is good for chording, and for a lot of fast scalar and pattern playing. The majority of players who do play like this will also move the thumb...

"Shredding isn't good music/it takes no talent/it has no feel" thoughts

Shredding is a tool in your toolbox. If it’s the ONLY tool, you’re not going to be a very interesting or well-rounded player, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an important tool to have. Those who criticize it usually lack the discipline or drive to develop it.

    Time well spent

When I first started, I went about 6-8 hours a day most days. Nowadays (30+ years, wife, kids, and 50 pounds later), I shoot for an hour a day 5-6 days a week and some days I like going longer – I keep the practice to that, and then enjoy PLAYING beyond that.

    Solo Trouble

@Nicole, well, welcome back then. I had a long break from about 2003 to roughly 2009, so I understand. The most important thing you can do is to commit to getting in at least some play time/practice time EVERY SINGLE DAY. 30 minutes every day will do a LOT more for you than one 3.5 hour session...

    Pick still slipping when downpicking

Came here to mention different picks, but Jak covered it. Tortex are much grippier than standard picks, and others have grooves, notches or other patterning to make gripping easier. It will always slip a little, but you can work to minimize it in addition to getting used to constant adjustments.

    No Show 😭😭😭😭

It’s all about perseverance and determination and hard work. I spent five years, 2-4 gigs a month, playing to virtually no one except other bands on the bill that night and their bored girlfriends. Every now and then you have a show that makes up for it and motivates you, but that’s the original...

CAB PACKS Tab added to the Store!

Of COURSE the pun was intended! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I’ll be doing a short video or two that are more what Syn asked for as soon as I can. I may ping you to find out the quickest way to put a clip to Instagram as part of the process – all I would know how to do is save a...

The hair! The reverb! The pink shirt! So many notes, with no direction or meaning! It must be the EIGHTIES - but no, it wasn't. It was 1994.

Inaugural offering of "Cooking with Captain Ed" video series. This episode looks at a long-term problem with picking mechanics, and how I came to be aware of it, along with how I'm going about fixing it. Sometimes a different pick can expose mechanical issues!

Can I be a roadie for A7X? Haha

Generally you need to prove your mettle roadying for an up and coming band before you’d have a shot at doing it for one of the big boys. And even then, bands that have made it tend to be loyal to the people that helped them get there – A7X would only likely look for a new roadie if one of their...

HELP! What do I do? My hand shits on me when I do economy picking

Honestly, it sounds like nerves or anxiety. Of course, it COULD be a physical problem, but better to try and address it mentally first. I would suggest taking one of the ones you’re having difficulty on, and slowing it down significantly with a metronome. Half speed, if you have to, and rebuild...
