    Playing outdoors in high humidity

I’ll have to let y’all down here. I’ve always played bare-neck guitars (no finish AT ALL) and so this never really affected me when I lived back east in all the humidity. Occasionally my fingers would feel sticky and sluggish, and a light touch of baby powder on the hands would help, but that’s...

    Syn's Vibrato Technique. I Just Can't Get It 😞

True story, Noah! I forgot about that! Part of why Zakk never used a Floyd. Messed with his signature vibrato too much.

    Aren't We Lucky?

I did the Gilbert school several years ago, but realized I was not where I wanted to be for hitting Paul up for tips at the time. Paul does indeed spend HOURS every day, on the road or not, watching student videos and sending back personal video responses, and he’s a wonderfully personable...

    Syn's Vibrato Technique. I Just Can't Get It 😞

Curvature of the fretboard. See here for explanation with pictures n shit! What Is Fingerboard Radius?

    What the heck?!

Give the neck 24 hours to get back to normal. If your bridge has individually adjustable saddles, you may have accidentally lowered the one for the G string? A little more guitar info would help.

    Syn's Vibrato Technique. I Just Can't Get It 😞

Strength (mostly finger, I think, but some wrist), experience, callouses, and “touch.” Now, Syn plays 10-52 strings, but he plays FOR A LIVING, and so even though I envy how much time you get to play, he gets to play more. I tried 10s, and ultimately settled on 9-46 (lighter top, heavier bottom)...

What are you currently listening to?

@Ids, if you haven’t listened, Springsteen’s Live 1975-1985 is genuinely amazing. The live version of Thunder Road that opens the 3-CD set is absolutely the most stunning and emotional version of this song I’ve ever heard, and the stories he tells on songs like The River are awesome. Racing in...

Best guitarist of all time poll

I tried to add Nick Jonas but it wouldn’t let me. Good calls on Loomis and Mayer. Both very DIFFERENT but awesome in their craft. Good to see Loomis with Arch Enemy – I caught them last year with Trivium, I think, and it was a great show and he fit in perfectly.

Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Thank you, Keymaster Syn! I will charge forth!

Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

I also have to say, I think the thing I need to focus on the most in my MENTALITY is “CHUNKING” for faster playing. That’s going to be the key to putting discipline into the chaos and making it so I can play fast and not just improvise fast.

    Rust In Peace

Must have been a rare day when Dave was on his meds. He gave proper credit where it was due, and no sniping or grandstanding. And he’s right – Marty elevated Megadeth in a way no one has before or since, though Kiko is a close second, as far as I’m concerned. Dystopia is the best album they’ve...

    NEW TSHIRTS ARE OUT!!!

@Ids, I’d say from his definition, it’s anything that adds personality to the notes, so yes – rakes would definitely be included.

    NEW TSHIRTS ARE OUT!!!

Amen. Never heard it called “inflection,” but whatever word you use for it – flair, feel, heart, expression, inflection – whatever word you use for it, without it, you’re giving us something a machine could give us. Catch the inflection infection!

    Lifting weights vs. Playing guitar.

Or waiting. Or keeping the weight down on the exercises that work forearm muscles. Anything you do a lot of wrist work for, like curls. The weightlifting is doing exactly what it’s supposed to – it’s tearing that muscle, so it can heal and rebuild. But – you NEED some of those muscles to play...

    Guitar Repair? (possibly)

Clarify: The cable jiggles when it’s plugged into the jack, or The jack jiggles in the opening in the wood of the guitar?

Most fun to play A7X Song?

I most enjoy Beast and the Harlot, Natural Born Killers, Heretic, Welcome to the Family, and Strength of the World. I know Syn hates a few of those, but c’est la vie.

    HELP

I don’t know that there’s anything you can do, but I do recommend keeping a spare set at home for situations like this. I always have at least one unopened set of strings around – just in case.

YOU GUYS! I dedicate this to the School, Papa & $yn!!🤩

Sweet! Sounds a lot smoother, and even your vibrato is cooler!

    HELP

By swapping two strings, you’re messing with the tension on the neck a lot. That’s alright as a temporary solution, but get proper strings on very soon and the problem should go away.

Can an Old Dog Learn New Tricks?

Thanks, Jak, and everyone. I think by putting what was in my head out there – here – I was, in a way, analyzing myself and realizing that it really IS just in my head. The anxiety. I need to work through it, for sure, but I do now understand that the limitation is in my mind. I just need to...
