Syn's Etudes – Sweep Picking II No longer available

I’d report that in the sticky tech thread.

Why your improv isn't as bad as you think

Unholy Confessions cover. Holy? or Unholy?

What Noah said – I hear the clipping in the end result. That could be happening at the buss master you’re rendering, or in the recording of the individual track. Listen to the isolated guitar track. If you don’t hear it there, then what you need to turn down is your master volume slider.

Unholy Confessions cover. Holy? or Unholy?

Playing is great, the tone is okay, but it sounds like you’ve got digital clipping (the staticky sound), meaning you’re recording too hot. Check your meters in your recording software – the guitar should be between -12 and -6db for the most part. Pumping up to 0db peaks is the old, analog way –...

I can Shred but i have no clue wtf iam doing.

That was, and largely still is, me. I have only a cursory and circumstantial understanding of basic theory, and I’ve been playing for over 30 years. In the last couple, I’ve been drawn to theory more for expansion of ideas and getting more, different stuff under my fingers and into my muscle...

Why your improv isn't as bad as you think

Okay, so this morning, I saw @jak post a backing track, and I had free time and an empty house. So… What does that mean? “Huh. Why don’t I improv over it and record it? Like, without even listening to it first? What could possibly go wrong?” First, I’m kinda lucky the guitar was actually pretty...

How do I play faster leads

You start very slow. Focus on perfection and economy of motion. Focus on the finger hitting the fret at exactly the same time the pick hits the string. You don’t move the metronome up 2-5 BPM until you can play the current speed in your sleep, like Ids said.

    Advice for discouragement

I get it. It is easy to be discouraged. When we decided to play an instrument, we became artists. Artists are notoriously insecure, and struggle against all of our smarter selves to lay our hearts and souls bare for all to see and criticize. Sometimes we are rewarded with praise. Some of us...

Is playing on multiple style guitars counterproductive?

Fuck, I had it backwards? Ahh well. What can you do? I can blame it on my age. I love Syn’s playing, but I tried a few of his guitars, and I just didn’t get along with them at all. Mostly the necks. That’s a sick story about the Tremonti. He’s a hell of a guy and a monster guitar player.

Always makes me laugh when people take shots at line 6

I had a POD HD500 that I loved, except the cabinet emulation sucked, so it sounded amazing when I pumped it through my power amp and 4×12, but recording direct, it sounded terrible. Worse, they didn’t allow you to use other IRs from 3rd party vendors, so you were stuck with their crappy cab...

Is playing on multiple style guitars counterproductive?

Mark Knopfler can do anything, as long as you don’t hand him a pick. 😉

    Help on Equalizing

You do you. Cutting frequencies that don’t really produce any sound worth listening to doesn’t alter the tone. Take a straight recorded track. Listen to it. Then put a low pass filter at 8k. Hard cut EVERYTHING above 8k. Can you hear a difference?

    Help on Equalizing

@filip, there’s a frequency range that each instrument sits in, in a proper mix. Everything above and below that range should be cleared out – usually entirely – to make room for the other instruments, while leaving the primary elements of that instrument intact. There’s very, very little in a...

    Help on Equalizing

Suit to taste. I *do* cut all those frequencies. In my tone, they’re just hiss.

Is playing on multiple style guitars counterproductive?

I would say get used to jumping around. As far as necks go, I have a distinct preference for a bare or satin neck, and my PREFERENCE is for a thin profile. Scale length is something that is easy to feel a difference in. The Les Paul (all of them) have a 24.75″ scale length, which means there is...

    A method to memorize scales

I forget the guy’s name, but there’s a Greek guy who teaches this way. He calls it SFS – string fragment system.

I know that riff. I think it’s Trivium? From The Crusade?

    Easiest to play?

Don’t even think about Johnny Hiland, Derek Trucks, or Brad Paisley.
