I need an expert on this one.

pizzicato is plucking, and it SOUNDS like plucking. Tapping may or may not be legato (I would personally classify it that way, since it’s technically all hammer-ons and pull-offs with no picking), but it’s definitely not pizzicato. In a real sense, most “normal” guitar playing is closer to...

I have one and love it, what are you wanting to know?

    what sets them apart

That’s when it all comes down to personal taste. Plus, there’s the legacy. If Slash came out today, he might not ever even get a record deal. Guns came out when it did, touched a nerve for the general populous with their style (though the talent and songwriting can’t be denied) and went down in...

Randy Rhoads – gone 36 years today

What a massive talent, and a huge influence on almost every rock guitar player to follow. No matter how big the arena tours got, Randy would find a local teacher in almost every town, believing there was no one he couldn’t learn SOMETHING from as a musician. That’s still a good lesson today...

    John Mayer's silver sky guitar

Mayer’s a fantastic musician and him wanting something very strat-like from PRS is no different than Tremonti wanting something very LP-like from PRS. I’ve tried many strats and never found one I could “get along with,” but I’d be interested in trying one of these. I just wish they came in the...

How to deal with keeping the Floyd Rose guitar in tunepast the 12 fret?

Get a better tech. He is absolutely 100 dead-ass wrong about Floyd Rose trems. They have similar intonation adjustments as almost every other guitar, and they absolutely can be intonated correctly. Bring it to a more competent shop.

Recommendation for SGS team and Syn

Heaf’s twitches are sometimes legendary. Dude takes requests, and does live playthroughs of Trivium favorites for the fans, in his house. It’s awesome.

    Elton John

Elton John is a legend. I was lucky enough to see him and Billy Joel tour together in the 90s. I haven’t cared for much of either of their work since then, but what they both did in the 70s and 80s is untouchable.

    Scream – Guitar Tuning

On the record, they’re all Syn’s parts. The lead parts, anywho.

    Jazz lll picks?

Second the Ultex Jazz III 2.0’s. I switched to those about six months ago after a multi-pick shootout, with them narrowly beating the JP picks, which are similar.

    Capo

Any capo that costs $150 better do my dishes and rotate my tires, too.

    guitar setup and maintnance

“At the post” – you mean the tuning peg/post? Hmm… Honestly, unless there’s a burr or something on the post, that may be a player issue. I broke a lot of strings in my early days that were just a matter of not having my technique down. I don’t know how long you’ve been playing, but that period...

    Finger Separation Exercise

I had to check :-). Right now, my left and right are roughly identical, stretch wise. I have short fingers, and the stretch needed is a bit more important for me than I give it time for. The simple exercise is using your other hand to gently spread the fingers until you feel some stretch. Don’t...

    Jazz lll picks?

The sharper point, as Ids said, but also the smaller size. I “choke up” on the pick a lot, and don’t see a need for all that extra real estate.

Playing with – and through – a disability

Aww man, I’m not the oldest guy here anymore (besides Papa). Sorry to hear about your struggles. One of my best friends was diagnosed with Parkinson’s probably almost 15 years ago. He has good days and bad, but finding the right cocktail to keep him steady was a huge undertaking, and involved a...

    guitar setup and maintnance

If it’s breaking consistently at a contact point – bridge or nut – it’s a setup issue and if you’re not comfortable take it to your local shop for a repair. It should not be expensive.

    Capo

I can’t imagine any capo that can break a neck – those things really are seriously strong – but a capo with too much grip can certainly pull some or all notes sharp under normal use, so you dont want to have that. Dunlop makes a decent one-hand-squeeze capo that should do the job. I think...

A Heartfelt Post About The School

A brave and sincere post. Unfortunate realities of anything in the entertainment field (except radio) – looks sell. On the bright side, it’s nowhere near as bad as it was in music in the 80s when MTV started hitting its stride, but it still sucks. I struggled a bit back when I was trying to make...
