Hey guys, I just thought I would start this thread as I have finally decide to take on economy picking so I will mainly just post videos and some tips that I discover in the hope to help out others and to be able to give something to play along to as the practice vids will be to a metronome. I will also try to emphasise the notes involved in the sweeping movement.
Tip #1: try and move your arm as well as your wrist. This mainly applies to what papa G refers to as D-own but if you do this it will help emphasise the sweeping movement needed.

Thanks Jak! If there is anything in particular you or anyone else struggles with I will combine them into a Q and A post but that will be pretty far down the road as Inam anout 3 days into economy picking (halfway through the major scale positions and practicing the 3-1-3 example in the dedicated video)

Okay! Here is part one of many on how to economy pick. This is the G major first position. All I would like you to do so far is just to play the first 4 strings as this uses the same fingering and you don’t need to move your hand position.
The video contains quater notes and eight notes. I definitely recommend starting with quater notes but if you already have an understanding of the motion and the scale feel free to try eighth notes.

I look forward to seeing how you get on and please let me know if you are having any issues 🙂

I forgot to mention that these videos will go up once a week or once every two weeks depending on how my practising and everyone else’s practising is coming along as I want to give you all a chance to air any problems you have before moving forward.

I have been practising economy picking almost soley every time I pick up a guitar and when I stop I get a lot of pain in my hand and I suspect it is because I am playing with my thumb behind the neck for a long time. Any suggestions on how to reduce this?

Ik not sure but pain has usually something to do with the way you hold your guitar. Personally I tend to play with my thumb over the neck and economy pick all the time with no problem whatsoever so maybe try that(it will also allow you to do Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and John Frusciante stuff that little bit better )

I too often play with my thumb wrapped for 98% of my playing but my hands seem to be quite small so trying to wrap my thumb while being able to stretch 3-5-7 can be really difficult but I will try that method and see if I can grt any results out of it.

For this week my task is to continue focussing on the 4 strings from last week but to begin to add the descent in. One of the most important things to note is that if you play 4-5-7-5-4 on the g sting (in other words if you do not repeat the 7 on the g string)you will end up hitting the final 4 on an upstroke. To make sure you are able to economy pick the rest, use inside picking to down pick the next note and that way you will be able to always change strings with a d-own.
This will also happen on the low E string if you do not play the 3rd fret twice before ascending.
Sorry if it is hard to understand. Please DM me with any questions. I am quite active so I should reply quickly.

Hey, Vsauce michael here, at 22:30 I picked up my guitar and holy shit what came out was ridiculous, It is not something that I could do every day as my progression isnt always linear (more of a 1 step forward 2 steps back) but what I did was so amazing for me that I have to share it, It was incredibly motivating to know I can do it but all I need to do now is keep working at it, video and excersise will be posted tomorrow (11th).
