Alice in Chains are the gods of harmonizing.
Correction

Laybe Staley is the God at vocal harmonies. What jerry is doing is basically their best imitation. The reason I say this.. is just listen to the entire dirt album.he did it all in 3rds (just like matt) guess you look at it as a duet for vocals. Same idea.

Harmonizing vocals works exactly the same as any harmonizing part would work, whether you're harmonizing guitar or vocals doesn't matter in the approach. The difference with guitar is that when singing them you need to sing the notes in stead of playing them on guitar.you can use seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, sevenths if you want too. Not all will sound that nice but you can use any interval you want.

Check the beatles harmonizations they are pretty good. What I have learned from them is that when you have the lead vocal doing a low note, harmonize it with a high note and for a high note try a low note. Try 5ths, 4ths they are cool but it depends on what you want. Try diferent things and see what you like more.
