So my band mages and I have a great idea to make a 10 minute long guitar ballad, and I need some suggestions for mixing. We want to stay out of a studio as much as possible and we want to just use free online mixing studios. I’ve heard a few names but I need some advice from people who have used them. Thanks

What do you mean by online mixing studio? I don’t think that there is anything online where you can mix your music, you need to have a daw and mix it in there. You can use reaper, it’s not free but you can use it for a month or two (not sure) and after that it will ask you to buy a license but even if you don’t buy it you can still use it.

Sorry Filip I think I meant to say “app” not an online studio. I’ve heard of people using apps like Garage band and whatnot to mix your own music that you have made. I know garage band is for Macs but I don’t have one. I would need an app that is compatible with Windows.

garage band is basically a demo version for logic. Whatever you will find that is free will be insanely limited. Dont forget they are designed to make you buy the real thing. My advide is either buy reaper which i know is not too bad or buy a audio interface. Some of them usually come with a daw like for exemple presonus sound card come with studio one.

Oh I didn’t know that. Thanks Radu. The thing is I just really don’t want to spend money on anything like that just because I know that if I did, I wouldn’t use it enough and the price wouldn’t be worth it. So now that I know I can’t really studio record it for free…are there any other ways we could record a whole song and still make it sound close to studio quality for free? I guess i could still use reaper for the first month or two for free like Filip said

I mean everyone who records songs in the studio or at home uses an audio interface so that’s something that you just need to have if you want a good quality recording. You can get a great interface for only 100$ or maybe even cheaper if there is an used one on ebay or something. You can record your guitar for free if you have a cable that you can connect in your guitar and in the mic jack in your pc but the quality will be pretty bad. AS for daws like i said reaper is really good but there are also free daws like Tracktion or Ardour which you can check out and you should be able to mix your songs in there. You also need an amp sim if you want effects on your guitar and there are a bunch of free amp sims out there so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks Filip you’ve been a lot of help my dude. I’ll check out Tracktion and Ardour since they are free. I’ll try to get a amp sim like you said cause I’ll be using distortion, but how do I actually record the guitar parts? Is that where the audio interfaces come in?

Yeah exactly, the audio interface is the one that will be able to transfer your line signal into the daw. so regardless, you need one. however there are some forms of accessories like iRig that are cheap options that could enable you to record (however if im not mistaken, its mac exclusive) . but yeah you need an audio interface in any way shape or form. I pretty much agree with everything Filip said

@Radu, @filip I have one more question for you guys. I downloaded Tracktion 4, then I downloaded a free guitar plugin called Emmissary. Tracktion scanned for plugins and recognized Emmissary, and it’s in the DAW, but I can’t figure out how to actually open Emmissary. (Where I can see the actual amp setup with the Gain, treble, FX, etc.) It’s downloaded in a file on my computer and when I open it it says the application can’t open it. I’ve tried opening it through Adobe flash player and I can’t open it through there. So do I need to download a software that will be able to open the guitar plugin (not Tracktion) or what? Thanks again

https://youtu.be/s9gyoQ_5iU8?t=272 this should do the job, the reason why you can’t open it because the plugin doesn’t have the standalone version or you haven’t installed it. Standalone means that you can open it without using a daw, it just opens it a separate program. In the video the guys shows you how to add effects and plugins to your track in tracktion 7 but it shouldn’t be much different from the T4.
