Hey everyone. I am back and I am having some problems. I hope you all can help me. As probably most of you don’t know. I have been in the studio for the past 2ish months. And haven’t had much time to be on this school. I apologize for being absent from school so long @syn. But my troubles are that I am trying to learn a section in a solo where it has a 4 note per string run in it between 4 strings. I feel that economy picking would be the best way to go at this but I don’t know how to economy pick 4 notes. Only 3 for now. I am ask you all the best technique to go about this. Like a good patter if that makes sense.
Thank you Synners, I look forward to figuring this out.

Ultimately you would want to start the pattern on an upstroke. If you started on an upstroke and alternate pick 4 times you would end on a down stroke thus being able to economy pick to the next string. At least that’s what my thought would be 🙂

4 note per string across 4 strings – like the descending chromatic run in the Beast and the Harlot. That’s straight alternate picking. If you were only doing it as a pattern across two strings, you could do as Jak suggests, and just Up-Down-Up-Down (skip) Down-Up-Down-Up (skip)…etc.
But across 4 strings, you’re either alt-picking every note, or you’re choosing a note on each string to NOT pick so you’re only picking 3 notes per string while playing 4. Troy Grady gets into talking about some of this as a core component of Yngwie’s style, if I recall.

With an even number of notes per string I find it easier to alternate pick and start every string with an upstroke, regardless of wether I’m ascending or descending. So that would up-down-up-down (next string) up-down-up-down, etc.
