My first cover video

Finally made my first cover video! My playing is a little sloppy for my first video but what I'm looking for is feedback on the quality of sound and lighting so if anyone has any constructive criticism or advice they'd like to give please share! I'm still learning and trying to figure all of this out on my own while trying to get something together for my first performance at this open mic night :) Login to view embedded media

  • Question
Guitar copier

Hi I am a new guitarist with musical background. I am going to be getting a Syn Custom S. I really like it and want to use it in a band me and my friend are forming. But dont want to feel as though Im a copy cat. I like the design and the custom look of it. I have looked into making my own guitar but cant quite get the whole idea of who to talk to about doing this. Also am on a restricted budget. Would I be a copy cat for using this guitar in preformances?

A7X Song lessons

Hi guys so I've been toying with the idea of starting lesson/tutorial videos on how to play some Avenged songs. With learning a lot of songs completely by ear over the years, I've developed my song transcribing to a point where I pride myself on being able to do it very accurately. Especially with Avenged just cause I've obsessed over the guitar parts since I was like 13. Is this something you guys would like to see? Would you guys prefer to have tabs in the video? I've never created tabs just because I haven't used them to learn songs in years but if it's something you guys feel is necessary I'll be sure to look in to it. Would you guys prefer to see just solo lessons or full songs? Let me know all suggestions welcome.

  • Question
Frustrated Beginner

So I've been working through strumming and chord changes, reviewing past lessons as needed. I fully admit I don't practice as much as I should because I don't have a good space to practice in/don't want my SO to listen in. Thus, I mostly practice on Saturday nights when he's not home. Anyway. Tonight, I decided to go into another room and try practicing. My SO suggested I sit on a folding chair to help with muting strings, so I gave that a try. I am still muting strings 😠😠😠! I feel like I've tried dropping my wrist, curling my fingers more (they won't curl much more), everything under the sun. And nothing. I don't know what else to do 😥. I thought getting a full size guitar would help but it didn't. I thought sitting in a better chair and droping my wrist and curling my fingers more would help but it didn't. I don't know what else to try. I know that my fingers won't curl anymore than they already do (I've tried), so it might be that I'm not cut out for guitar? I don't know what else to try and I don't want to bore you all with more videos of the same chords over and over. Changing between chords is hard, too, but I think that will come with practice. But I don't know what else to do about the muted strings. Nothing seems to work :(. I don't mean to sound whiny...I'm just venting some frustrations.

Kurt Cobain Guitar Noise

I haven't seen any Nirvana style guitar yet on here but I was wondering if anyone knows how kurt makes those noises on guitar? Like the really scratchy distorted noises in his songs.
Its all over all of his songs but this very beginning of this video is a good example:

Some other easy to find examples are the ending of Aneurysm and beginning of Serve the Servants.

Guitar Help with picking wrist reach, positioning and transitioning through strings

I have made a few posts about this before but I have researched into the subject area more and tried to monitor my movements more and I feel I can better explain the issues I am experiencing.

The first thing I noticed was that I find it really difficult to change strings without making large movements with my wrist or with my elbow/arm. It usually result in my wrist being perpendicular to the strings which makes it tough to play higher (in pitch) strings and when coming back up the strings to finish a scale etc. When watching professional players like Syn, Papa Gates and people like Bernt, they are able to cover large distances with hardly any wrist deviation so I didn't know if there were any tricks.

The second issue which stems a lot from the first is the angle of my wrist when picking. I was watching Troy Grady's video on Upward Escape Motion and one of my big take aways was when he talked bout setting the range of motion. This basically entailed tilting the wrist downwards due to the upwards deviation of the wrist (when parallel to the strings) is much less than the downwards deviation so it in theory allows for the upwards deviation to be bigger. This has helped when picking notes on a single string but I still struggle with position of the wrist when fgoing up or down the strings.

I think this is due to an issue I spoke about before which is getting my wrist and elbow movements to work in tandem. Usually its either my wrist trying to make all the movement or my arm pushing through the strings but I have seen a lot of people use the technique of picking a few strings and then pushing with their arm when their wrist starts to deviate a lot.

Overall Im at the point where (and I know its a stupid thing to think) but I'm just like, "is my body just not capable of making them movements that are supposed to be made for ergonomic playing "and I cant really think of a way of sorting it.

My first show!

I finally booked my first show! I’ve been practicing a lot lately trying to get some of these videos made and they’re definitely still in the works. But I’ve got a lot more work ahead of me to make my first show a good one. I only get 15 minutes but I’m gonna make those 15 minutes count. I’ve already got my songs picked out (Bat Country, Sonne, Seek and Destroy (radio edit)) I’m definitely going to send out some of my videos soon but before that happens I will be spending a lot of time getting ready. I’ll also be representing the Synner community with my new badass Synner shirt I bought! Wish me luck guys! I’m definitely posting a video of my first performance which will be on September 2nd!

Shipping Guitars to the UK

Hi everyone. I've found the guitar I would like to buy on Reverb but it will need to be shipped to the UK from Netherlands. Having never owned an electric guitar I don't really know if they travel well or not. Does anyone have any experience that they could share please?
I'm also trying to work out tax, VAT etc. Nightmare.

And last but not least do guitars need to be 'set up' or are they ready to play? The one I want is new if that makes a difference.

Thank you all so much for any help you can give me.

Behind the Lens - Photography Thread!

Sup Synners!

So, as a few of you might know, when I'm not playing a guitar or working on art, I'm often found glued to my camera. Because of this, I figured that I would make a thread to share some of my own shots and encourage you all to do the same, if you feel so inclined! Sure, it's fun to be in front of the camera as many musicians and artists want to be, but behind behind the lens is, in my opinion, just as fun if not more!

To kick off, I thought I would share two shots from my most recent gig on May 24th, featuring Defects and Bullet For My Valentine. I'll tell you a little bit about what I did, where I was, all that fun stuff! I will add, this was the first time I'd shot a "big" band, and probably the third or forth time capturing a live gig like this, so I've definitely got a long way to go, but it's the journey that matters.

DEFECTS008.jpg

So first off, we have Defects! Technical details first - I use a Nikon D3200 with the most basic 18-55mm auto kit lens you can find, and this will most likely be the case for a while until I get an upgrade :ROFLMAO:. For this shot, I had 1/125s shutter speed (fast enough to get mostly clear shots without removing too much light), ISO 800 (makes dark photos brighter but oh dear lord the grain, as you may have seen) and an aperture of F4.5 (I would've much preferred around 2.8 but gotta make do - Lower is better in dark situations, from my experience). Finally, I edited in Lightroom and ended up making a whole bunch of presets for this gig that I'll most likely never use again :ROFLMAO:. I didn't have a photo pass, rather I waited all day to make sure I got barrier, and shot from the crowd. There wasn't too much shoving this early on into the set, so I was able to get plenty of shots and most came out nice and clear-ish. The red and blue lighting was a bit tricky to adjust to at first, as it tended to remove a lot of the detail on the faces and arms compared to the clearer, white lights. However in some circumstances like this one, it did lead to my favourite contrast ever (if you've seen my IG... you know what I mean). Overall, these guys were fantastic!

BFMVDT018.jpg

And finally, we have what is currently my favourite shot from BFMV! Technical stuff - Same camera, same lens, slightly faster shutter speed of 1/160s (their lighting was slightly better overall as they used the bright lights much more often, so I could increase the speed and still get clear shots), same ISO of 800 (this did vary between 400 and 800 throughout the night, depending on song/lighting), and same aperture of F4.5 (I didn't touch this during the gig.) Taking photos during Bullet's set was much more of a challenge. Between the moshers crushing the barrier, crowdsurfers coming in overhead and security standing in *just* the wrong place (no disrespect, they were all fantastic at their jobs, just unfortunate on my part) I had to try time everything the best I could. This shot was just after their first or second song, so before all the chaos took place, and the lights just happened to go up right at the perfect time for a clear shot of Matt Tuck. Later on, I'd end up being whisked out of the crowd due to a neck injury, but all is well and it was worth it!

So yeah, that's what I have to share for now! I'd love to hear any feedback or comments, and even more so, I'd love to see you all share your own photos, whether they're taken on your phone or on a camera (OR, if you're absolutely mad, on a 3DS. I've seen you people out there and I respect you 👀). They don't have to be gig related either - Just any nice photos you'd like to share and talk about! I'd love to just share some appreciation of photography with everyone because it truly is a wonderful art and I feel sometimes it can get a little overlooked despite how often we consume this kind of media!

Finally, I plan to do a SynTV stream at some point in the near future where I edit a few photos with you all! I don't have a date set for this yet, but once I do, I will let you know!

Cheers everyone! 🤘 💀🤘

  • Question
Bad selector switch?

I recently bought a Syn Gates custom S and has been working fine up until a few days ago. The bridge pickup gets a really weak output, sometimes it can be shortly fixed by moving to the neck and back to the bridge but eventually it weakens out. I took it to GC and they told me it was the selector switch, although I’m not sure how much I trust the guy who told me that. Any possible fixes?

Amp Contest Winner!

Hey guys!

This was a hard one, but Syn looked over the names, your designs, and the votes and chose this name as the winner!

SGS-Wattage

Congrats @Ed Seith :rock-hand: your name won the contest and you'll be receiving a free amp!

BUT! There is also another winner:

Ampy McAmpface

Haha congrats @chris_is_cool! Although you aren't officially naming the amp, you will be receiving a free one!

Thanks to everyone who participated and to those of you who didn't win, there will be plenty of contest opportunities in the future! ....like maybe November 23rd *wink wink*
