Pick story time

Basically I was playing guitar yesterday and was like 'hmm what is going on, I can play better than this' and got a little annoyed with myself at some point.

Now comes today, I'm waiting for my movies to compute and there's a pick laying next to my laptop. Basically, I look at it and go 'wow that shouldn't be that blunt' so I replace it and that was the problem all along.

Basically, replacing picks from time to time matters more than I always thought.

Beautiful point! I've also noticed how they wear down tells a lot about how you're holding the pick in relation to the strings.

This actually made me take note of mine and i discovered i MIGHT not be holding the pick exactly perpendicular to the strings.... Hopefully you can tell by the picture (Left brand new, right slightly used) but it seems to be wearing more on the right side of the pick itself! Ill have to pay more attention to this now!!

My pick actually slips a lot and sometimes when is strum I use a side of the pick instead of the tip.

Mine wear a lot too a lot more if Im strumming, and its a big difference when I change for a new one!

I loose my picks before that happens. Drop one in my room then find it it having a rave with its other fallen brothers in the kitchen at midnight!

This forum post is the story of my life I continually have to change to a brand new pick especially when playing/practicing metal.The weird thing is that I hold my pick pretty lightly, but with the amount of pick contact I get from the string I get the pick feeling different/used very quickly.

What would be valuable to know is how often @Syn Gates or @Brian Haner Sr. actually change picks when playing - live or otherwise. I always imagined as a touring band that brand new picks would be in infinite abundance on the road.

Is it a case of new pick new night, or playing with comfortable wear? (if that makes any sense)

I can honestly play comfortably with a worn pick for a long time. The lick in question has been used for like a year and never got that bothered by it

I find that I'm the same man! My issue tends to come when I've been playing on a worn pick for a good while and my muscle memory is set into the 'give' of that particular pick. Then when I switch to a brand new pick, I feel a lot more resistance that can be off-putting. Depending on what it is I'm trying to play

For me it's more a moment where the part of the pick that is supposed to hit strings disappears

That makes a lot of sense though ! It's got to be a case of trial and error

I use Ultex Jazz 3s. Really durable material. Used to use just normal jazz 3s but have found this material to be a little pricey in comparison but well worth the extra £. On the topic of picks, I am so certain picks have legs. I cant remember the amount of times I drop a pick and disappears. Later I find it on the other side of the room.
