IMAGES AND WORDS by Dream Theatre

Oh Goddamn, finally one of these I *really* know. This is one of my all-time favorite albums. In 1992, I got approached three different times by three different musicians who didn't know each other, and all of them said the same thing: "Have you heard Dream Theater? Holy shit." I hadn't and...

Difference between punk rock chord progression

Punk is typically very power-chord driven (root note, 5th, and occasionally the octave). It tends to stay away from major or minor tonality even more than mainstream hard rock. "Typical" progressions (I-IV-V, etc) are common, but really, just pick 3 or 4 power chords and see how well they fit...

I bought the bass used on A7X's Self Titled album

Just a curiosity, Alex, and feel free not to answer if you rpefer, but did you pay a premium for the history, or more or less what it would sell for on Reverb? Or did Freddie cut you a deal 'cuz you're awesome?

As if I needed more pressure lol

I only know Jerry from the two songs The Snowman did from Smokey and the Bandit, but they were fucking RIGHTEOUS! Dude was always a crazy serious player.

    Feeling bummed

Sorry, but that's kinda bullshit. The most rewarding things in life DEMAND that you work for them. Walking away when it gets tough is how you get nowhere.

    Feeling bummed

Building a band is hard. People talk about how marriage is hard, but that's only two people. A band is 4 or 5, and the personalities are VASTLY different. The challenge has always been finding people of similar talent who are as hardworking and dedicated as you are, then getting them all into a...

THAT IS 100% CORRECT! Good job! ⭐

    CAGED System – The E Shape – Lesson 27

I just watched through the lesson again, and he makes no reference here to a document or diagram, but he is repeatedly referring to the shapes of the pentatonic box and the CAGED system, so a review of Lesson 20 (Overview of the Pentatonic Scale) and Lesson 23 (Overview of the CAGED System)...

A wonderful excercise for practice minimum effort in order to improve your playing

Not harmonics, just don't press the string all the way to the fret. The end result is a slightly muted sound, not intended for use in actual music (though it kinda could be). It's more to learn and practice better motor control in your fretting hand.

    Music and mental health

Wow, never would have caught that without this pointer. I'm not a huge lyrics guy. Being an Aspie, I sometimes miss a lot of hints, especially emotional beats, on things. Lots of songs, even if I know the lyrics by heart, I couldn't tell you what the song is ABOUT, which is probably why I've...

Give Yourself Permission to be Creative - Ethan Hawke

This was a great talk, and certainly has a lot to think about for our musicians and songwriters, and really for any kind of artist or performer.

Thanks for the "Captain"-ing, Radu! Totally cool with being Kirk.

    Palm muting advice

Honestly, I think your palm is a little too far back. The meat of your palm should be resting just in front of the saddles, regardless of what kind of bridge it is. Move forward and back along the string, heavier and lighter, to see how the muting changes to find what you like and what fits the...

Help with a guitar and Amp that I found

Spot on, Alicia. I’d start with a 10-15 cable, to be make sure it works. The more expensive cables will last longer, but you don’t know if you need decades out of it yet, so a cheaper cable that will last a few years is a good start. any of the major string brands will do - daddario, Ernie...

What are you currently listening to?

Ahh, Grey Daze. One of the best frontmen of the current century with an utterly adequate and forgettable backing band.

    Fake Synyster Gates guitar EXAMPLE

Something additional that I didn't notice until looking at this comparo - the pinstripes on the fake are not parallel to the neck/strings, like they are on the real deal.

    ANNOUNCEMENT: Your Synner Team

I've been in Minnesota in February. Honestly, I don't understand how you people live. Here's how I look at it - you guys with your cold, you have a few months of the year where it's just not smart to be outside - at all - and you scurry from house to car to store and back again. We have a few...
