    Iron Maiden recommendations

From a listener's perspective, you can't go wrong starting with the best live album in the history of metal, Live After Death. That will give you the best of most of the golden era of Maiden, performed ferociously live.

    String height and other issues

Ok, so your best bet is going to be to take it into a local guitar shop for a setup. That may cost around $50US, but is well worth it. If you can't afford that, or want to learn how to do it on your own, here's a VERY basic approach: 1. Neck bow. If you put a capo on the first fret and a...

    Playing and singing

And remember, your natural range is not that of a 75 year old man. Start by trying an octave up from original, and then use the capo to bring it up or down as needed to be comfortable for your range.

    BEETLEJUICE, by Danny Elfman

I just wanna know how much a guy like Syn has to drink to have a hangover. I mean, he's a professional, for Chrissakes.

    BATMAN by Danny Elfman

Thanks, Grandma - I'll just stream it!

    BATMAN by Danny Elfman

Okay, so I haven't seen this movie in a LONG time - decades. I may have to revisit. The score is pure Danny. As varied and eclectic as he is, there are always "tells" that give away the author, whether he's writing soundtracks, solo stuff, or Oingo stuff. As I listened to this there was a part...

    BATMAN by Danny Elfman

It’s funny, I’m on my bike ride, and I made a quick playlist of Batman and Wanted. More on Batman later, but I listened for you in “The Little Things,” and nah, nothing, but a couple tracks later in a more orchestral piece, there was some highly processed stuff that sounded like “atmospheric...

    BATMAN by Danny Elfman

I haven't heard this one in forever, so I'm gonna spin it (that's how the Olds say it!) today. HOWEVER, @Syn Gates could you tell a little bit more of what you did on the Wanted soundtrack? Always loved the movie and the soundtrack, and I never knew you were anywhere near it?

    Exercises for strengthining pinky finger?

eighth or 16th notes to a metronome for 1 minute each: 1-4-1-4-1-4-1-4 2-4-2-4-2-4-2-4 (and this is the hard one) 3-4-3-4-3-4-3-4 Speed up as you get comfortable, but get SMOOTH with it, not "floppy" like everything with the goddamn pinky is :) .

How do I memorize a wide variety of songs?

When you start playing in a band, it's six months to a year of playing through the songs in your setlist 3-4x a night 2-3x a week before that first gig. Y'all play shit that much you're gonna remember it. It's about muscle memory and repetition. There are some songs I picked up after not...

    New rebrand is live!

Main "Community" feed. If I filter on "unread," each thread, whether I click the title or the "View" button, goes to the beginning of the thread and not the first unread comment.

    New rebrand is live!

Not sure if there's a setting somewhere, but when I click on a thread with new/unread comments, I love how it used to go straight to the first unread comment. For me at least, since the upgrade it goes to the beginning of the thread, even if there are 3 pages of comments.

    Amp and Pedal Price.

It's not, though as with all things, there is no guarantee of an endless production run. The USA run will be perhaps more limited than the lower-priced offshore version, but I suppose that will all depend on how much of a market there is for it.

What defines Guitar driven music genres?

Ids can say more, but that's not correct. The black keys are the sharps or flats on a piano. The pentatonic scale is just five notes of the major or minor scale (no 4th or 7th), so if the C major scale is C D E F G A B, then the C Major pentatonic is C D E G A - literally none of those notes are...

What defines Guitar driven music genres?

Chris did a great job on his writeup and Calvin summarized nicely about genres and subgenres. I'd add that for subgenres, a lot of those nowadays really just started by a band being made up of two (or more) very diverse primary (genre) influences. I.E., when bands started mixing blues-derived...

My guitars and taking suggestions for upgrades!

I recommend locking tuners for EVERYTHING. Saves a fortune in time and frustration. On the Chelecaster, if you like the feel of it overall, look at replacing a lot of the wiring, pots and other components with quality spec, as that’s the kind of stuff they cheap out on, assuming it stays in...

    Amp and Pedal Price.

I was guessing that for the pedal, but wasn’t sure. Nicely done! Is it Hellwin-ish?

The Art of Live, as seen in Randy Rhoads

Take a look at this video about Randy; it's not long. While you're watching, listen to the leads Randy plays to songs YOU ALREADY KNOW. Compare them to the studio recordings. Randy, and most guitarists of the era, hit the finer points of his solos note for note (or close to it), giving the...
