    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

For just different string brands but same gauge and tuning, the adjustment would be minimal, and I probably wouldn't worry about it with a Floyd unless I was recording. On almost anything else, it's a very simple adjustment.

That's cool. How is the Fender Play? You enjoy it then? Feel it helps you get results?

Every note you sit on should have SOME kind of vibrato on it unless you specifically make a conscious effort to NOT have it. Some element of vibrato (from subtle to Zakk) should be a part of every note you sit on, by default. It's a stellar habit to get into.

    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

You should only ever have to re-intonate if you change string brand or gauge, or if you permanently change the tuning of a guitar. In other words, if your standard tuned guitar is now going to become "my Drop D guitar" semi-permanently, you should re-intonate the low D string. If you decided it...

Great tone for this, and nicely played. As Ids said, vibrato. This solo is ALL about the feel, and you have GOT to feel it. Also, not sure you're aware you're doing it, but most of these bent notes are NOT picked again at the top of the bend, but you're picking them there. If it's your...

Sliding chords is a lot more difficult than some people give it credit for, and you did a great job. It's an important nuance to that riff that a lot of beginners would miss. Nicely done, and your giant smile at the end made my day! Your timing still needs some work, but I suspect you know...

    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

Tune the G string PERFECTLY, then lightly fret the 12th fret and check it against your tuner. If the 12th fret note is sharp or flat versus the open string note, you can make a simple adjustment to that string's intonation. Adjust - retune - retest - repeat. When tuning, NEVER strike the note...

is it a Floyd? What bridge is on it?

    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

The G is always fucking weird, bro. I think it's a math thing with wave resonance or something. Sometimes what works on certain guitars is tuning the G string *very* slightly sharp, assuming all the other strings are perfectly in tune. And I do mean VERY slightly. Intonation will NOT affect the...

    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

ABSOLUTELY. There are free apps for your phone that will be almost as good a tuner as a clip on tuner. On an acoustic, there's really no intonation adjustment, so if you have something that sounds weird, tuning up is going to be your first step. It is NATURAL for a guitar to go out of tune for...

    Buzz from neck pickup

Intonation has nothing to do with the electronics, and it can be a hard thing to explain. It has to do with string length and tuning. I've just created a thread in the Kitchen for it. (3) SETUP: Basics of Intonation | Synyster Gates of A7X Official Website - Synyster Gates School (syngates.com)

    SETUP: Basics of Intonation

On a properly setup guitar, with a good tuner, an open note (say, the open D string) will ring exactly the same on the tuner as the 12th fret on the same string. If the 12th fret note is a little sharp, then your string length is slightly too short. If the 12th fret rings a little FLAT, then the...

A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO YOU from Phil Spector

Truthfully, he's been in prison since 2007 or 2009, so we weren't going to be getting anything new from him. Some outlets are reporting the cause of death as COVID-19, but apparently that's not confirmed. A wicked end to a hugely talented life.

    FRIZZLE FRY by Primus

Les is from another planet. Like most of your AOTMs, I've never dug into the album, so I will. Also, Bruce Willis movies rule. My absolute favorite terrible movie is Hudson Hawk. "Can you fuckin believe it?"

    Writing a song

To expand on Calvin's point (which is a great method), standing in a room with your band and ask the drummer to "give you a beat." Then start jamming to it, and finding bits of stuff that works. Not lead, but riffs, parts, chords, etc. Keep playing it, fine-tuning it and having fun with it, and...

    String tension and playing fast

I've done both, and it depends on where your personal tolerance is. I found for years that using a 9-46 set at standard or Eb standard worked fine for me. I've since moved to 9-42 (after spending a few years with 10s) on my standard tuned guitars, and on my Eb standards I wound up feeling really...

    Amp Contest Winner!

When the amp contest was running, Syn believed the first promo photos would hit at the end of 2020 with the first shipments late in Q1 (February or March). Since we've not seen any promo photos yet, it's likely delayed a little bit. COVID would be the usual culprit, but he's working like hell...

    Guitar pick up selector

Sounds like it's only making partial connection. Electrical contact spray is relatively cheap and will not harm anything. I agree with Ids that it's not the input jack. It's either the switch itself, or the wiring of the bridge pickup. Most likely the switch. Contact cleaner can be sprayed...
