    A question for EVERYONE

I’d like to contribute. I’m also decently experienced with Reaper, mixing, comping, etc. Not so much with video files, but with audio, I have experience.

Is there a lesson for this?

Each fret is a half step. If you capo the 4th fret and play an open G chord, it becomes a B chord. G +1 G# +2 A +3 A# +4 B Nothing theory or “circle of fifths” or CAGED about it – it’s just basic math here.

First trip to a guitar store/ experiences

I would have taken that comment more as “don’t worry about making noise, this ain’t a library.” I know it can be intimidating, but the people that work there are used to folks of all stripes, including people who have never even touched a guitar. There’s always a teeny bit of intimidation...

    What Guitars do you use?

    Show us your music collection

I had well over 500 CDs. I hocked almost all of them. Now I pay for Amazon Music and have 10s of thousands of albums always at my fingertips. I don’t see myself going back.

    Lowest tuning bands

I think Periphery have gone as low as F, but I don’t remember on what song.

Did anyone start playing because of syn or Brian Sr.?

Neither of them was an influence back in 1984 when I started, but I did lose my way from guitar around 99/00 and City of Evil, among other records, really made me want to not become someone who “used to play guitar.” Beast and the Harlot also made me focus on a few things, so I’ll definitely...

    Guitar slipping

Play standing up. It sounds like a joke, but I’m being 100% serious. I never do any serious practice sitting down. You don’t gig sitting down, so if you practice that way, then gigging is different and you’re not used to it. People who practice sitting down wind up being people who gig with the...

    Hellwin amp?

Weird! I still see my response there!

    Mastering guitar

The more of an expert one becomes, the more he (or she) realizes that “mastery” is a lifelong goal but a fleeting dream. Govan is probably closest to it, but his humility refuses to allow him to call himself a master – he claims he still has much to learn, and he’s right. He may have less to...

    Hellwin amp?

He did speak to it in a similar thread here not long ago. He still records all the albums with it, but (IIRC) often uses a Fractal on the road for consistency, and is considering switching over full-time, as he considers himself a “futurist.” I imagine with the release of the AxeFX3 last month...

    Favorite riff/solo to play?

@jared – Probably sometime, I don’t know. I’ve been doing my own songs for years, and wishing I had a band going again. Now, I finally have a band going again, so that’s eating a lot of my time. This is a little experiment I did a few years ago. I went from “I think I’ll write something” to...

    Advice Needed For My Singer

If it’s not a mix thing (i.e. turning up the vocal track), it might be a “head mix” thing, where she’s self-regulating her volume too low. That often comes down to self-confidence, which is a downward spiral. Try doing a multi-track recording with her. Use Reaper, or GarageBand, or whatever, and...

    Favorite riff/solo to play?

Lately, it’s been a riff of my own that I haven’t turned into a song yet.

    Writing leads

Such a great solo you made everyone throw up. Nice! Seriously, though – very cool. Some odd flavorings in there. I like it.

How frequently should I be changing strings?

When I was playing 2-3 hr rehearsals 3x a week with a band, plus gigs on the weekend and home practice, I would alternate changing strings on one every weekend, so with two guitars, they were changed every two weeks. I play a LOT less now, and will easily go 6-8 weeks, then sit down and do them...

    Writing leads

HOW you do it is a matter of your own style, and that includes approaching it from different ways based on how the solo section and feel of the song as a whole lead you. For me, if the song has a simpler part under the solo, I’ll usually loop the part and improv over it repeatedly until I find...
