    Pedalboard Love

I picked up a Drop pedal at Christmas time, and I have to agree – it’s a great pedal. They’re getting REALLY close to lag-free, and it’s awesome. It’s the only ACTUAL pedal I have The RAT is an awesome distortion. It’s got this, like, notch filter sort of thing in it, that makes an almost...

    Jam

My parents live on LBI year round. I spent summer vacations there from New York State when I was a kid – I love the shore. But I’m out in AZ now, no short trip. Good luck!

Have you read this?? (here at the school)

I had no idea this existed, but it was a fascinating read. Nothing beats getting a nearly unfiltered read into the mind of an artist reflecting on their own work. And Papa’s final words are gold, Jerry; GOLD! “Why chip away at my own legend and play something shitty now.” Love it.

    A7X TOUR!

PHOENIX! Not really into any of the opening bands, at first glance, but I’ll give them a listen. 3DG is not the same with the new singer, but we will see – I didn’t care a lot for them with the old one, either. I passed on the Metallica slot knowing they’d come back around with the full...

    Blues? Effect

Hi, Julian! While metal tends to have a lot of highs and lows, with the mids cut out, and heavier use of delay pedals, blues will, in addition to using less gain, be more reliant on the rounder sound of a tone with more midrange, and good analog-style reverbs. It also benefits more from a neck...

How Did You Get Into A7X? Did The Music Help You Cope Ever?

Probably around 2004, a friend’s kid mentioned them and thought I might like them. I did some quick searching for clips online (pickins were slim back then) and I didn’t especially care for what I heard. I don’t remember what song it was, but I thought Shadows sounded whiny and the Rev sounded...

    Strings

Changing strings is not especially hard. You’d be well-served to learn how to do it yourself, because it’s not a problem that will ever go away. Get a string winder (costs less than paying someone else to string the guitar) and you probably already have a tuner. Some clippers, and you’re all set.

What else do you use to learn other than the SGS?

I’ve used the MTC (Musician’s Training Center) from Micrologus.com to be a great tool. I can build play-along or scale exercises, and it adjusts the tempo to build speed. I went a lot of years not playing, or playing very little, and this tool was instrumental (no pun intended) in helping me get...

    TREMOL-NO ?

I use the tremsetter, which is slightly different. It puts the floating bridge on a detente plane, kind of like the swinging door to the kitchen in a restaurant – it swings both ways, but always gravitates to the center position and has resistance (both ways) to hold it there. I find this...

Hail to the King Intro Tutorial and Finger/Pinky Exercises

How bad ass that @syn himself sent an email out to the membership praising @jak for this tutorial! Congrats, that’s AWESOME!

    Legato

I got some great tips from Mark too, when he did a pre-show lesson thingie in my area, about 2 years ago. He gave me a LOT to work on, and one of those things was some legato stuff. As far as going “down,” I think it’s just a matter of habit or preference if you hammer or pick when you switch...

    Are Yamaha Pacifica's any good?

My main guitars are my 2015 PRS Custom 24, and my 90 and 91 Ibanez RG550 and 540R Custom – both bought new. I also have a 2010 Gibson Les Paul. I’ve had some outstanding instruments. For some time, I did have a Yamaha Pacifica Telecaster copy. It was a fine guitar that I enjoyed playing. It’s...

What are you currently listening to?

@daniel, that whole first Boston album is GOLD. It broke my heart when Brad Delp took his own life.

    Papa Gates

Thanks for the detail – It will certainly help color interactions with my son as he picks it up. I like your style!

    Misheard A7X Lyrics? (For Fun!)

Great stuff! Can’t think of any A7X right now, but I’d like to know where you got “mondegreen” as the term? We called them “toomaloos,” because of the line in Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb:” “My hands felt just like toomaloo” (two balloons) So where did “mondegreen” come from? Nevermind...

    Holding the Pick question

Help me out here – what’s the difference? How much of the pick point is exposed, or is it something different with the pointer finger?

    Any Djent/Prog metal fans here?

@Ids, you probably wouldn’t care much for the Djent. It’s got a lot of cookie-monster vocals. This is, to me, perhaps the catchiest djent tune out there, from Periphery’s second album. This is one of the singles, Scarlet. I gotta say, I really love this song.

    Video editing softwares?

On recommendations, I downloaded the free OBS Studio, but I’ve not had a reason to try it yet. Free is a good price for experimenting, though, so maybe look into that? https://obsproject.com/

    Any Djent/Prog metal fans here?

I’ve been a big fan of Periphery for a number of years, but the style of play is so far removed from what I spent decades doing that trying to learn a lot of it is an exercise in frustration. Add to that the constantly shifting tunings and the extended ranges, and it’s just not worth it for me...
