    Fearr

Fear of the record light is as old as the record light itself. Deep breaths, physical comfort, and doing 100 takes until your subconscious realizes that, “yes, you can back up if you mess up. As often as you want.” That’s what will help settle you the most so you can get the take. And it happens...

What pick size you guys prefer ?

I’ve used thick, Jazz-size picks for over 30 years. It was Jazz 2.0 Stubbies for over 20, then I hunted for better. Finally landed on Jazz III Ultex for size, feel, and tone. The JPs are great, too, but are a little bigger than I’m used to. Despite the different coloring, those are also made of...

Selling your guitar to a store?

If you bought it new for $130 last year, you will not get more than maybe $40 for it. TOPS. You might get $75 if you try to sell it privately, but it will take longer and be more hassle. Anything you buy new will lose a significant part of it’s value the minute the return period is over. Selling...

    Band Issue Question

Start looking for replacements, and boot him when you find someone. The clip-on tuners work by vibration induction – you don’t need to have volume turned on at the instrument for it to work. Plenty of pros use them onstage – that should be a non-issue.

    Writing a metal song

For me, I usually start with a simple drum pattern on a drum machine (or now, EZDrummer). I keep it on a loop and just start playing stuff over it (not lead playing!) until ideas start to coalesce into a repeating pattern. Bam, there’s a riff.

    Need advice for new guitar!

The Heafy’s a nice axe. Hard not to love.

    What drives you?

I started right around my 14th birthday, right before I went into high school. That was almost 34 years ago. The learning tools we had available back then for the self-taught guitarist were pitiful compared to what we have today. I wish the YouTubes and other internet and technology stuff had...

feeling like I'm not good at guitar

It seems to be a fairly constant trait in guitarists to think we’re not much good. I’ve been playing almost 35 years, and man, there’s so much shit out there I listen to and can’t play, and I think “Ahh, man, I suck.” I have convinced myself that all the people who pay me massive compliments are...

    Feeling stuck

This video of Steve Vai relates to the advice I gave earlier.

    Leftie flip……. Ideas!

Ibanez. I’ve been playing them for 32 years. I have others – I have nice Les Paul. I have a core PRS. I love them. I have a Schecter 7 string that’s *okay*. I love Ibanez.

    Jazz III

I started with Jazz Stubby 2.0mm about 27-28 years ago. Used them for over 20 years, then I started looking for something different. I tried some faux turtle shell picks from Red Bear. The first one was amazing, and it lasted over a year (for ~$28, it better), but they’re handmade, and none of...

What are you currently listening to?

On a power metal kick lately with old Gammaray – listening to Insanity and Genius from ~1995 right now. Great stuff. Kai Hansen is the shit.

    Making a living with guitar

Anything outside of being in a rock band or busking on a street corner WILL require a solid command of theory, and that includes reading music. And the odds are stacked against you. Badly.

    Good low-intermidiate guitar solos

I just wouldn’t consider real shreddy stuff to be “low-intermediate.” You have to work up to that, and while you’re doing that, there’s a lot of amazing lower-technicality stuff that can hone other critical chops.

    Good low-intermidiate guitar solos

Ward knows his stuff. While learning to shred is fun and important, if you don’t also learn to phrase well and be genuinely expressive, while also staying IN TIME, it all just sounds like another YouTube wankfest lacking real musicality. I find a lot of those guys really daunting to watch, but I...

    Good low-intermidiate guitar solos

In what world are HTTK, Paul Gilbert and Mark Tremonti solos “low-intermediate” skill level?

what is a good tube amp for an apartment

Tube amps are notoriously loud, and usually require BEING loud to sound good. They also typically require that a cabinet/speaker be attached to them for proper load. For apartment living, I think an emulator is better – AxeFX, Kemper, or on the cheaper side, Line6 Pod HD500 or one of their...

    Amph settings

Start with all the knobs on 5 (“12 o’clock”). Play for a few minutes. What don’t you like? What sounds like shit? Is it too “flubby?” Turn the bass down 1, and try again. Not enough CHUNK? Turn the distortion up 1 and try again. Experiment which each of the dials – how does it sound at it’s...

Should I be ashamed for pirating softwares?

Is it wrong? Of course it is. If you didn’t know that already, you wouldn’t ask. There are people who try to justify their theft, just like they always have with music, but it’s still stealing someone else’s hard work. However – if you’re poor, there are not many alternatives. I’ve done it; I...

    how do I create harmonies

The Iron Maiden Method is mostly to write the melody and then play it identically five frets lower. That’s also known as “harmony for dudes who don’t know theory.” It works really well in some cases (see “Iron Maiden discography”) and not so well in others. It’s a start, while you learn theory...
