Issues with playing above the 12th fret?

The notes are fretting out because your bridge is adjusted too low. Depending on your reasons for bringing the bridge down that far, your neck may be bowed too far, and you may need to tighten the truss rod – the neck bow should be only VERY slightly forward. If you’re not comfortable or...

    Papa Gates

I’m more interested in hearing about how he got Junior interested in playing, and whether or not he taught him or if there were outside teachers involved. My son is 12 and expressing a little interest, but doesn’t seem interested in learning ANYTHING from Dad.

Is it my pick or am I just bad at alternate picking?

Picks are cheap. Get a JazzIII pick and try it out! I use an Ultex Jazz III now, which I think is about 1.5mm thick. I choke up on it like crazy so only a tiny bit is showing. YMMMV.

What are you currently listening to?

Trivium – The Sin and the Sentence. Such a great album; probably their best since Shogun, and it’s right up there. A good cross section of styles, amazing new drummer, great songwriting. Love this album. My two favorite bands got new drummers before their latest albums and both blew me away.

    Hellwin Amp

That’s neat, Jake! I really wish dude had posted the tone matches, though!

    Hellwin Amp

I remember the amp was launched timed with the release of Hail to the King, at least somewhat. Unfortunately for Schecter (and probably Syn), a picture surfaced around that time of the AxeFX in his rig, and there was a lot of speculation that the Fractal was his tone and not the Hellwin. He...

    String Recommendation

You’ll get as many different recommendations as answers. All I would recommend is staying away from expensive “boutique” strings until you get good enough to know what you want and like, and not break strings all the time. That means avoid the Cobalts, and Elixirs, and NYXLs and all that. Any...

How to lift the fingers ''less'' when playing??

Very common problem, and one I have as well, and still haven’t taken the time (and discipline) to rectify. It’s all about the speed, and how much of it you can get RID of. Start super-duper-crazy SLOW, and be very conscious of lifting each of your fingers as LITTLE as possible, minimizing your...

    Staying cool while onstage

If you’re not “of age” or you prefer not to drink, then a brief meditation with breathing exercises for calm.

    Staying cool while onstage

1 drink 10 minutes before stage time to get your nerves through song 1, and by the second song, you’ll relax on your own. Don’t sweat the little mistakes – there will be plenty but no one will care. Smile, make eye contact, and have fun – that stuff is infectious!

2 amp channel switching with midi

I see one on Reverb for $175 plus $25 shipping and another for almost $250, but I’d go for $150 including shipping. I think I even have the original manual, but not sure.

what dream theater album should I listen to first

Images and Words from 1992 was their breakthrough. I remember around that time, different musician friends all apparoached me separately asking, “Have you heard DREAM THEATER yet?” I hadn’t. Youtube, streaming, and anything online didn’t really exist yet, but the local music paper (the East...

    Struggling to learn songs, help?

Put the track on a loop from the last repeat of the chorus into the bridge section, and keep playing it that until you get it right a few times, then go back and try from the beginning of the song. It also helps sometimes to make an arrangement chart. Intro 2x Verse 4x Chorus 2x Verse 4x Chorus...

2 amp channel switching with midi

Yeah, this would automate the hitting of the Mesa footswitch. It’s super-easy to program and very reliable. It’s a 1/2 rackspace unit. I mounted mine to a rack shelf, wired, and rocked.

2 amp channel switching with midi

I don’t know what current tools exist, but from my old rig, I have a Rocktron MIDI “Octopus” that I used to control my non-MIDI amp channel switch with my MIDI-based multi-effect unit’s foot pedal. It worked flawlessly in gigs. In the first pic at this link, it’s the top one...

    Synchronization

I got tired a few months ago of my level of synchronization, so I took a fairly simple alternate picking exercise, and I committed to doing it at a PAINFULLY SLOOOOOOW speed every day for like six weeks. Just 5 minutes a day, in addition to my normal practice and warmup routine. It made a huge...

How does everyone else play power chords?

When I was younger, I used first and third exclusively. As I got older, I found myself gravitating to first and fourth for just about anything below the 5th fret. I can still do it first and third, but first and 4th is just more comfortable now and get off my lawn.
