Memory Lane

Hey everyone. Completly random post... I've started a new job which means I'm on the bus for 4 hours a day (I'm trying to learn how to drive but I suck at it 🤷🏻‍♀️) and I suddenly have so much time to listen to music. So I've realised that every single Avenged Sevenfold album holds so many memories for me. From drunken crazy nights out, the birth of my children, being hospitalised...
I particularly remember having unholy confessions as my ring tone all those years ago and being absolutely delighted everytime someone rang me. I didn't want to answer. Ahhh to be young 🤣
What memories do you you all have?

Oops. So I won't be playing for a while.

So yesterday at work, I umm made a mistake. I now have stitches in my left middle finger. Needless to say I am still going to try and teach my friend who is still very new at playing. Its going to a little difficult trying to teach but not show. But more than likely I will find some songs that can be played without using that finger. Learning experience I suppose. Or I will drink beer and just let him jam out to what he knows so far to get the muscle memory going.

Hail to the King Cover!

Had a few hours to kill over the weekend so I attempted to cover Hail to the King! I found a backing track for the drums and bass but played all guitars myself (rhythm, both harmonies, solo). Let me know what you think! I know I botched the solo a bit... some of those licks are pretty hard and I didn't feel like spending all day perfecting it.

I used a Fractal Axe FX-III with Syn's Cab Packs to make the tones here. I am pretty happy with the rhythm tone overall, but feel like it could use more teeth and bass. I am still struggling to get a great solo tone - this one has too much pick attack and is a bit squeaky at times. Can't figure out how to cut down on that - I've tried a lot of different settings. Welcome any suggestions in improving the tone!

What makes your playing uniquely you?

One of my favorite Jimmy Page quotes is:

“I believe every guitar player inherently has something unique about their playing. They just have to identify what makes them different and develop it.”

Not only is it one of my favorite Jimmy Page quotes, but it’s one of my favorite points of musical discussion. I asked this on Twitter but I’m dying to ask it here. What makes your playing uniquely YOU? And how do you want to expand upon it? I’m not just talking about guitar either. What makes the way you play your instrument, or draw your drawings, or write your writings, or whatever your form of artistic expression may be, what makes it special and unique to you?

I am new here...

Hello. I'm Cleo and I am new to this community, new to guitar and am really pleased to be here.

I've always wanted to learn guitar but life has this way of making me do other stuff. But here I am, ready to learn. Finally.

I grew up listening to Guns N Roses mainly (Thanks Dad) but I don't think that I ever loved music as much as when I discovered Avenged Sevenfold when Waking the Fallen came out.

Maybe one day I'll be able to play one of their songs... in about 25 years ha ha.

I am currently at that stage of choosing my first electric guitar which is tricky when I've no idea what I need... I am having fun looking though.

Thanks for having me.

Vocals Trouble with voice after singing

Hi, sometimes I practice vocals/singing and it can go decent. Often for like 2-3 days after a good day my voice is messed up, it's like dry or hoarse and I notice my tone when at the store or something. For a while I kept getting worried I damaged my voice or something but I think it's from the practice ( among other things ).
Is this normal and are there ways to prevent this? I'm not very experienced and have been kind of going about it my own way.
I heard drinking tea and having ice cream is good.

I need to go for now

Happy Birthday Syn!! : )

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SYN! Thank you for being such a great influence and person to look up to. I think I speak for all of us including myself when I say that you and Avenged have pulled us out of some very difficult times in our lives and instead gave us inspiration and a peace of mind. Thank you for all the great music but more importantly this great place for all of us Synners to hang out and learn from each other. Have a great rest of your day and I hope You and everyone else are doing well ( :

Cordially :p

  • Question
Practicing each lesson

Hello all,
well I’ve recently come to know this amazing school with very cool environment. However, i have a general question about practicing each session. I mean as the lessons go by we definitely learn more material and more chords etc. so my question is how one should practice them. Like for example should we really master all the chords and switching between them before going to the next lesson? And in case we don’t need to be perfect to go to the next lesson, shall i practice all the previous materials everyday or there’s a better way to practice them.
Thanks in advance for your answers! :)

Best guitar pick for Syn's style of playing

Hello SYNNER'S!
41.gif

I had been playing the guitar for about 7 years before I began to learn Synyster's playing style (Sweep picking, economy picking, etc.)
And for the majority of that time, I was using Jazz 3 picks.

A while ago, I tried using a regular sized pick (specifically, this PRS Heavy) and it felt more... "right," so I was wondering if this pick is suitable for syn's style of playing.

Although it feels like I have more control with a regular pick on fast sweeps and other fast parts, I am not used to this size.

Do you have any suggestions on which pick is better?
Does it depend on the style, and I need to switch to a bigger pick when playing Syn's stuff, or should I stick to what is familiar.

Introducing me and my A7X signed guitar from 2007 :)

Thought I would introduce myself into the group and share my A7X signed guitar.

I'm Aaron. I've been a fan of Avenged Sevenfold since sometime of City of Evil time frame, my father got this guitar signed by all of the guys in 2007 (he only got a photo of Matt signing it though). It stays tucked away in my guitar closet :) I've been playing guitar for something close to 20 years now.

Wanna share something

Even though I haven't met any of you in person, I feel like you're all family. I know I haven't been around here much, as I've been focusing on some more basic guitar stuff and been working on my mental health issues. I didn't want to share this on my socials but I wanted to tell someone and I like the anonymity here. So I've been clean from self harm for 1 year now!!! I almost relapsed a few times, and everyday is still a struggle, but I made it a year and I'm so proud of myself.

Fractal Users & Ideas / Favorites

Hey all! Not sure if this is currently being done under another thread, but I know we all have a significant appreciation for our tone. I have noticed a good deal of Syn fans on Youtube, IG, etc. using Fractal Audio products that have created some killer tones. I myself have an ax8 and like to think I am pretty creative in building tones similar to Syn's (off what my own ear perceives) but I would love to have some open dialogue and maybe share some tips/tricks amongst this awesome community to help us all achieve better tones. I'm assuming most of us have purchased the cab packs on the website and they are INCREDIBLE. Where I think a unique opportunity lies is that most of us probably have similar setups (invader pickups or Syn's signature) which would be beneficial in trying to achieve specific tones. I would love to share some ideas and metrics that have worked for me as well as hear what works for you guys. For example, in Axe-Edit (what amp are you modeling? I use the 5153Red for most of my lead tones with a compressor before it with some high attack. Hopefully this gets the ball rolling and I look forward to sharing ideas with everyone :)
