SCALES THEORY - Lesson 4 - Melodic minor scales

You got away with harmonic scales, but I am still sending Doomguy after you if you say that our songs need to be melodic...
  1. Topics of discussion
  2. Melodic minor scales
1. Topics of discussion

In this tutorial, we are going to talk about melodic minor scales. So, let's have some fun.

2. Melodic minor scales

A melodic minor scale is also obtained by altering the natural minor scale. This time around though, we raise both the 6th and 7th notes of the said natural minor scale.

For example, the melodic A minor scale will consist of the A, B, C, D, E, F♯, G♯, and A notes. Here's how it looks like:

am_melodic.png

And yeah, there's this weird rule that my theory teacher taught me that when you play it in descending order, you're supposed to play the notes at their original pitch. I don't really know why that's the case. Just remember that when writing songs using a melodic minor scale, you're supposed to sharpen the 6th and 7th notes.

Anyhow, here is the scale played back.

And with that, we conclude this tutorial. Next time, we are going to discuss modal scales. See you then.

BATMAN by Danny Elfman

:syngates:Yo Family! This month’s #AOTM is a special one. I went with one of my favorite soundtracks by the master himself, Danny Elfman, in this dark epic, Batman.

This also happens to be one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time, it’s an absolute masterpiece imho and the music serves a huge part. The themes for the characters are flawless and even tho he goes into some classic, quirky, Elfman awesomeness, I love that this collection of music is generally darker, more serious, and super fucking epic a la The Batman Theme.

If you’ve never seen this movie I would implore you to watch it first. It’s even got music from Prince in this bad boy, really GREAT Prince in fact:explode-skull:

I had the amazing honor of working with Danny on the soundtrack for Wanted. He was all business, a perfectionist, and a man of great mystique. He’s exactly how you’d imagine him if you only knew of his work for Batman(as opposed to his work for PeeWee Herman lol).

This AOTM might contain the most secrets to any A7X album than all the other previous AOTMs combined:rainbow-mushroom:

Lemme know what you guys think and again, please watch the movie first if you haven’t already. It’s the Tim Burton directed version with Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger.
Truly a masterpiece:pink-heart:

All my love,

Drums My mistake in my kicking technique

Hey everyone!

So I wanted to share today my experience about bad technique and where it leaves me. Before anything, here's a bit of context. I started drums about 3 years ago. I bought a pretty cheap kit from a friend and just started hitting stuff around for fun. Of course, eventually I started taking drums more seriously as I developed my studio and my ambitions for music and so I started to practice more seriously and more consistently.

Unfortunately, I never had a drum lesson and I just sort of went behind the kit and improvised. Went on the internet to check what people advised and I thought I understood what they said about kicking. Using your ankle to push on the pedal and build your muscle and motion from there. Okay, I thought i had it down. And so as disciplined as I am, I was practising everyday but eventually, I started feeling pain in my right knee. Okay, I schedule a meeting with my doctor in February 2021 and we talked about it. I told her about my life style and what could cause the pain and the thing is that, at the time, I was jogging everyday as well so when I said that, she said that jogging might have had a bad effect on my knee. (For more context, I was jogging during winter time with boots on. This is definitely a bad thing that can cause pain). So as per her advice, I stopped jogging thought she said that the repetitive nature of drumming could play a role in that however since she was a general doctor, she had limiting knowledge on drumming. (continued with different workouts though). But the pain didn't go away even months after I stopped. I had to take breaks because the weird pain was annoying. It never was anything that stopped me from walking or anything. It's just that the fact that I was feeling my knee so strongly couldn't be good for the long term.

So I went and saw my doctor again in august and this time, she told me to the an xray of the knee to see what could be there. I did so and my bones were just fine so it must mean that it was the ligaments. And so I kept wondering what to do and what could be the cause of it even though I had a little voice in my head that clearly was telling me what was the cause. The pain came from my right knee and lightly appeared in my left knee. I practice a lot of double kick so it wasn't a surprised but I was still using the right foot to kick more than the left one.

And so a friend drummer and I finally came to the conclusion that I developed simply a bad technique for kicking. I was using my entire leg to press on the pedal instead of doing an ankle motion and so doing this repetitive movement went and caused uncomfortable feelings on my right knee.

So what's left to do? Well, unfortunately to accept my mistake and start over. I have to dismantle everything I knew and used to do and build it back up from the ground which means that that I have to take it all back down in terms of speed. All progress I made will have to be reevaluated and yeah! But this is what has to be done. I made a mistake and now that I properly realized it, I have to go on correct it. Yes it's going to slow down things in the sort term but at the end of the day, by doing this, I put all the chances on my side to be able to play drums properly but also to avoid general physical pain in the long term so yeah, gotta do what I gotta do!

Just wanted to share my story because I highly believe in accepting when we make a mistake and doing something about it. We can't always be perfect and it's all a learning curve. Making mistakes is a part of the process to general betterment. And the next step is to recognize it and then to correct it so, there I go!

Have a great day everyone! :)

Here we go again..

Being modest, I am still a beginner guitarist though I probably don't give myself enough credit. I'm always learning. I have been playing off and on since Jr. High School, fucking Van Halen started it all for me lol. Once upon a time I met Sammy Hagar when I was 15. Guitar is the best therapy and metal has always been a life long obsession. Music runs in my family and I feel it's something I need to master or I will forever feel like a fucking loser.

The lick challenge has begun!

It's time for something new. We're taking the riff challenge to a new level!

The rules of this challenge will be the same as the good old riff challenge. You remember that one, right?
For those of you who don't, and the newer members it goes as followed:

To join, all you have to do is leave a comment stating you want to be challenged. Anyone can reply to your comment giving you a random lick from the internet or a lick from a song, and you can do the same to others.
(Try to make sure there are tabs for the lick. You can mention your level to get a fair challenge)
Learn the lick you've been given. It would be fun if you record yourself and share it here. You can play the lick over the original track or use it in an improv, that's up to you. Don't worry about recording quality, this is all for fun and to motivate your playing.
After that shout for a new lick, or challenge someone else.

You're allowed to make requests about licks in a specific style to learn something, or to ask for something new to expand your horizon.

I challenged myself with a random lick I used in an improv. (Is it really an improv if you’ve been playing it for 3 days? 😅) I’ll post it in the first comment.

The first official victim of the challenge is @Radu-Cristian Perde !
I challenge you to learn Killswitch Engaged - Holy Diver, the post solo lick.

Game on 🤘

Synyster Custom S pin stripe vs Satin Burst

I recently got the gold satin burst guitar after having the black and gold custom S for 6 months and wanted to share my thoughts on the two of them.
The main reason I got another one was so I could keep one in E standard and one in drop D tuning. That way I can use my gold pinstripe one to play syn’s etudes and other songs in E tuning while using the gold satin burst to play drop D stuff.
The Satin finish is much preferred for me personally since it makes sliding so much easier especially in afterlife and the stage. Also the 14 inch fret radius does make a noticeable difference if you play while standing up.
The gloss black and gold one does look a little bit more solid and feels almost heavier and higher quality, but I do like the satin one more for playing since it is easier and I personally like the look better.
I often wondered if there was really much of a difference between the two and after playing both of them daily I know 🙂
If anyone has any questions about the two of them feel free to ask!

I am struggling with knowing how my song would be perceived. Can anyone offer reassurance about this song?

Login to view embedded media This is the song I think I am concerned about the mixing it's just hard as I making with a charity so it's hard to have the most time to get the mixing precise. Also Whenever I go to the studio to record I have a 1-hour slot to record aspects of the song also singing so can feel quite pressured to get it right and have only 12 sessions. I guess I work slow. I know there are vocals that are pitchy and some tonality issues. I do have belief in my ability in singing, it's just hard to get the best takes in an hour slot without a warm-up, etc. I most likely can not make any vast changes.
Was just hoping I was being a pessimist about the song and perhaps someone could reassure me, that it's not all doom and gloom. The charity has been great to me it's a record label for artists with mental health. As I am someone who suffers from this. I do love the song but I am taking it with care to want it to be proficient and to be well satisfied with it.
My other song has not been mixed and I am more confident about it. If you wanna check that one out it's below. The songs are unreleased. So hard making music not knowing how people will perceive it. Thanks for reading.

Drums Placement of Drum Kit parts?

Hello, as I've been playing drums for roughly half a year, I was wondering how I should position the kit parts?
Spacings and placement, right now I kind of feel like I'm facing left a bit too much.
I'm right handed and the kit consists of 3 Toms, 2 that connect to the Kick Drum, a Snare, a Hi-Hat Pedal, 2 Cymbals and a Ride ( I think those are the names )
Each time I'm jamming at this place I go to I find myself adjusting the Hi-Hat and snare distances for space and feeling comfortable.
Is there a proper way to lay them out?
To me it seems fine when I look at it but I have little to no experience
I can't imagine where the double kick would go with the Hi-Hat there ( if there was one )
One more thing, sometimes if I place one not so great I have to adjust my approach as to not hit my fingers with the Snare, Hi-Hat.

I'll try to get a picture tomorrow if it helps

Thanks in advance! :money-face:

Issues marking lessons complete

Hey everyone, I know several of you have mentioned issues with marking lessons complete. We've been looking into this issue further and have not been able to replicate it at all on our end so if you could let me know if you're still seeing it, send me any relevant screenshots, what lessons you're seeing it for, and what device you're using I'd really appreciate it!

Transcription ear training? Easy transcription songs?

Whaddup Synners?

For all my transcribers out there I had a question.

I am starting to pick up ear training and I wanted to ask you all what would be more beneficial for me.

For my age I know that I cannot develop a perfect pitch so would training intervals be more effective?

Whad do you think?

Additionally. Do you have any easy songs to initiate myself to transcriptions? I tried choosing songs and always end up biting off more than I can chew and get kinda discouraged.

Thank you all in advance!

Picking issues

Hey dudes, ya miss me! It's been a while. Over the course of the past few months I have been practising a lot of technique, my sweeping and legato has become more fluid but one thing that seems to not improve is my alternate and economy picking, the main stumbling block is that everything feels quite clunky, the pick seems to get stuck on the string than moving through it and it's something that I have no clue how to fix. I have tried pick slanting both ways but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Guitar Quick Tip: Changing Magnets your pickups and correct phase

Howdy,

A simple thing you can do with cheaper humbucker is swap out the ceramic magnet for an alnico one.

Something you will want to ensure is that you keep the magnet in the right orientation. (Or potentially to reverse the orientation if you want that out of phase sound).

An easy way to do this is to use a compass to make sure it's in the same orientation.

Usual disclaimers, don't do a magnet swap unless you are comfortable with what you are doing and I'm not advising you go do this, more if you already were, here's something that will help.

Community Practice Time - Sunday Feb 6th 1pm EST

So about a month ago I did a stream where I talked all about learning and how to approach it. Well, now it is about time that I put my money where my mouth is and actually pick up a guitar again.
What do I want this stream to be:
  • The, as we say in Dutch, the stick behind the door to actually force myself to practice guitar again
  • An online, community study hall where everybody just works on their own thing and has a good time
  • A way to get instant feedback or questions answered
When I started playing guitar again at the beginning of the panorama I found that basically anywhere you look you're getting bombarded with sleek edited videos of people being amazing at guitar, and honestly it wasn't motivating for me at all. So yeah, this is not gonna be that. I am not in any way, shape or form, a good guitar player, but that is the whole point of this stream. I'm mainly doing this for beginners, because in the beginning I was was terrified of showing videos of myself playing guitar and I don't want anybody else to feel that way.

See you there hopefully! :geek:

Greetings Synners

Hello there! I'm Joe.

I've been looking around for a place to get better at guitar and this looks like the spot. I've been playing for 12 years but lack in the lead playing department.
I also transcribe guitar by ear at a professional quality level after being trained by the guy (Russ Elton) making Trivium's official tab books and would love to be able to play more of what I transcribe. Looking forward to being here and learning more about guitar from one of music's best.

  • Question
Random Jamming

Just had a preview show gig last night, and our pianist just began playing piano chords before the show really started, and everyone was looking at me to jam along with him. I have no issues with soloing, and I'm in fact pretty good at it when I know what key I'm in. But it was at that moment that I realized I needed some kind of technique to find what major or minor key someone is jamming in so that after I find it I can get to work lol.

I've heard of people using the CAGED system to do this, but I have no idea how to do that so please give some explanation thx.

  • Question
Beginner What scales to play over chord progressions

I now have a better understanding of scales and I know about chord families of notes. Let's take Key of C for example, It'll have the chords C , Dm, Em ,F , G, Am and b diminished. If these chords are being played in a random order then If I'm correct you'll have to play in key of C. How do you figure out what scales you can play over a certain chord progression when improvising? Thanks Synners 🤘

Practice without your instrument + A7X breakdowns | Jan. 29 @ 12pmCST

Hey everyone!
This weekend I'm going to go over some ways to practice music without your instrument.
There are plenty of ways you can "practice guitar" or "practice _____" without having your instrument in your hand or however you use it. Rhythm is a big one for every instrument - drummers, this is all you do so it's as simple as drumming on yourself without sticks and a kit. Other instruments could be strumming to different subdivisions of a click, practice timekeeping with quarter beats and every polyrhythm from 4 to 10, or infinity if you're just godly. So, that would be counting 4/4, then 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, etc. For my stringed instrumentalists, you can learn the Circle of Fifths, practice Chord Formulas, Mode Formulas, Naming Chords with certain notes/intervals. All these things can be done on an airplane, underwater, in space, underground, on a ferris wheel, in the car, at work, on the phone, in the shower, while you're hiking...you get the point.

I'll also be doing a few Avenged Sevenfold song breakdowns where I will explain mostly everything from chord progressions, melodies over chords, harmonies, what makes this or that part major/minor, how the chord progression is determined, why a certain solo might sound so good, why this or that note sounds so good here or there, scales and modes for harmonies, solos, and melodies, and more! I accept song requests!

If any of this sounds interesting, please stop by jooshellis's channel on SynTV this Saturday, January 29th at 12:00pm CST to learn more!

Vintage News Report on Heavy Metal - 1987

This is a fun watch. The Iron Maiden concert in New Jersey they speak of at the beginning of the segment was my very first concert. We saw them flip the car and set it on fire. It was a good gig.

I also remember a school friend in my junior year (also 1987) was killed walking home FROM CHURCH on train tracks. He didn't hear the train. All of the news reports couldn't wait to say he had been listening to Ozzy, as if that somehow meant something to them.

I also remember Dee Snider from Twisted Sister completely OWNING the conversation when he was summoned to US Congress to talk about the influence of metal on kids. They expected him to be an ignorant loudmouth.
