Community Practice Time - Sunday Feb 6th 1pm EST

So about a month ago I did a stream where I talked all about learning and how to approach it. Well, now it is about time that I put my money where my mouth is and actually pick up a guitar again.
What do I want this stream to be:
  • The, as we say in Dutch, the stick behind the door to actually force myself to practice guitar again
  • An online, community study hall where everybody just works on their own thing and has a good time
  • A way to get instant feedback or questions answered
When I started playing guitar again at the beginning of the panorama I found that basically anywhere you look you're getting bombarded with sleek edited videos of people being amazing at guitar, and honestly it wasn't motivating for me at all. So yeah, this is not gonna be that. I am not in any way, shape or form, a good guitar player, but that is the whole point of this stream. I'm mainly doing this for beginners, because in the beginning I was was terrified of showing videos of myself playing guitar and I don't want anybody else to feel that way.

See you there hopefully! :geek:

Greetings Synners

Hello there! I'm Joe.

I've been looking around for a place to get better at guitar and this looks like the spot. I've been playing for 12 years but lack in the lead playing department.
I also transcribe guitar by ear at a professional quality level after being trained by the guy (Russ Elton) making Trivium's official tab books and would love to be able to play more of what I transcribe. Looking forward to being here and learning more about guitar from one of music's best.

  • Question
Random Jamming

Just had a preview show gig last night, and our pianist just began playing piano chords before the show really started, and everyone was looking at me to jam along with him. I have no issues with soloing, and I'm in fact pretty good at it when I know what key I'm in. But it was at that moment that I realized I needed some kind of technique to find what major or minor key someone is jamming in so that after I find it I can get to work lol.

I've heard of people using the CAGED system to do this, but I have no idea how to do that so please give some explanation thx.

  • Question
Beginner What scales to play over chord progressions

I now have a better understanding of scales and I know about chord families of notes. Let's take Key of C for example, It'll have the chords C , Dm, Em ,F , G, Am and b diminished. If these chords are being played in a random order then If I'm correct you'll have to play in key of C. How do you figure out what scales you can play over a certain chord progression when improvising? Thanks Synners 🤘

Practice without your instrument + A7X breakdowns | Jan. 29 @ 12pmCST

Hey everyone!
This weekend I'm going to go over some ways to practice music without your instrument.
There are plenty of ways you can "practice guitar" or "practice _____" without having your instrument in your hand or however you use it. Rhythm is a big one for every instrument - drummers, this is all you do so it's as simple as drumming on yourself without sticks and a kit. Other instruments could be strumming to different subdivisions of a click, practice timekeeping with quarter beats and every polyrhythm from 4 to 10, or infinity if you're just godly. So, that would be counting 4/4, then 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, etc. For my stringed instrumentalists, you can learn the Circle of Fifths, practice Chord Formulas, Mode Formulas, Naming Chords with certain notes/intervals. All these things can be done on an airplane, underwater, in space, underground, on a ferris wheel, in the car, at work, on the phone, in the shower, while you're hiking...you get the point.

I'll also be doing a few Avenged Sevenfold song breakdowns where I will explain mostly everything from chord progressions, melodies over chords, harmonies, what makes this or that part major/minor, how the chord progression is determined, why a certain solo might sound so good, why this or that note sounds so good here or there, scales and modes for harmonies, solos, and melodies, and more! I accept song requests!

If any of this sounds interesting, please stop by jooshellis's channel on SynTV this Saturday, January 29th at 12:00pm CST to learn more!

Vintage News Report on Heavy Metal - 1987

This is a fun watch. The Iron Maiden concert in New Jersey they speak of at the beginning of the segment was my very first concert. We saw them flip the car and set it on fire. It was a good gig.

I also remember a school friend in my junior year (also 1987) was killed walking home FROM CHURCH on train tracks. He didn't hear the train. All of the news reports couldn't wait to say he had been listening to Ozzy, as if that somehow meant something to them.

I also remember Dee Snider from Twisted Sister completely OWNING the conversation when he was summoned to US Congress to talk about the influence of metal on kids. They expected him to be an ignorant loudmouth.

  • Question
Beginner Scales

I have learnt some scales here on synner. But I do not know how to use them. I know how to form the major scale but I see people playing scales on different positions and sometimes they play it in a 3 notes per string kinda way and sometimes others. So what's the use of scales and how do you practice them. Which way should you play scales? Like the three notes per string way or other? Is there only one scale used in songs or multiple? How do they figure out which scales will sound good and which ones will not sound good together. Also, how do they figure out over which chords to play a specific scale? Thanks guys 🙃

Howdy Synners! 💞

Howdy howdy y’all!

I’m terrible at introductory posts but I’ll give it a shot 😂 i’m Mary 👋🏻 Music, gaming and photography are a few of my favorite things 🤸🏻‍♀️

New to the forum but not new to play guitar 🎸 (though if you heard me play, you’d probably think otherwise 😬🤣)

I play my ear, have since I was little - so hoping to get proper lessons to help merge the two eventually 👌🏻

Love singing & playing guitar, often find myself playing for hours after saying “I’ll be done in a minute” without even realizing it 😂🙈 music has always been a passion & a big part of my life and an amazing outlet for me 💞 so happy to have found Synner with the help of some good friends who are already here - I’ve apparently been living under a rock 😂🤌🏻

I look forward to talking to & getting to know you all 🤗

What I learned in 1 year of making music

So this is going to be a long thread but bear with me, it's at least going to be a fun read if nothing more :)).

So at the beginning of 2021, I decided to fully focus on making music. And a year or so later, I figured it's a good checkpoint to share some of the things I've learned as I make somewhat of a comeback here:
  • There are no shortcuts to sounding good - in the beginning, I was kinda lazy and focused on the results instead of the process; as a result, I used a lot of MIDI in places I shouldn't have, and while it sounded...good, it didn't sound natural; the only way to truly sound good is to record those damn guitars and only use MIDI in places where it could still work nicely (piano, strings, bass, drums); but you gotta make sure you humanize those notes; I learned that the hard way
  • What you want to write and sing may be wildly different than what you CAN write and sing - like many around here, I like Avenged Sevenfold, a lot; probably wouldn't be here if I didn't; and as much as I want to sing like M Shadows, at least at this moment in time, I can't; my voice is that of a baritone, which tends to sound better in the lower register (think Bono of U2, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran, Ghost, sort of anyway, etc. ); and while I can reach high notes through training, it's a bit difficult to make my voice sound as full without recording takes at lower octaves to add fullness to those damn lyrics :))
  • You cannot work around double-tracking your rhythm guitars - this is non-negotiable; I tried everything imaginable; you can't skip this step if you want your guitars to sound good
  • Music production is probably more important than what you write - this one's self-explanatory, but if your song sounds like a turd, no one's going to listen to it; not even you; music production is also a separate job on its own; and you gotta learn how to do it
  • The process is more important than the result - I hate that I have to agree with this one, I really do, but if you don't enjoy the process of recording your songs and producing them, it's going to make things a lot harder; it becomes easier to manage because, if you keep going and improving, you will start seeing amazing results from one song to the next
  • You need people to collab with - I hereby NOT summon someone from this lovely school that has managed to transform me from a wannabe musician to someone that can make actual full-fledged songs sound decent and figure out where they need improving; that student is mine, I'm keeping him :)) ; I mean, if he sees this and replies, that's on him, but I'm still keeping him \s; seriously though, another set of ears will help immensely;
  • Keep your ego in check - being proud of what you do is crucial, but don't let ego get in the way of allowing outside feedback that would help improve your craft; everybody deals with this one, me included, and it's a lot of work to keep it in check
  • People will judge the shit out of you - people will say you should get a real job and won't support you until it's cool to do so; never forget those who were at your side when you were no one (I hereby NOT summon another member from this community);
  • Social media is a cesspool that you must use in some form or another - I hate social media a lot, but it's honestly one of the few ways I can actually get people I don't know to listen to my stuff so...yeah
  • Last but not least, you will inevitably sound like other bands - another non negotiable one, sorry; you can use that as help to figure out which fans you could target in your social media stuff though
