Beginner Scales

I have learnt some scales here on synner. But I do not know how to use them. I know how to form the major scale but I see people playing scales on different positions and sometimes they play it in a 3 notes per string kinda way and sometimes others. So what's the use of scales and how do you practice them. Which way should you play scales? Like the three notes per string way or other? Is there only one scale used in songs or multiple? How do they figure out which scales will sound good and which ones will not sound good together. Also, how do they figure out over which chords to play a specific scale? Thanks guys 🙃

Howdy Synners! 💞

Howdy howdy y’all!

I’m terrible at introductory posts but I’ll give it a shot 😂 i’m Mary 👋🏻 Music, gaming and photography are a few of my favorite things 🤸🏻‍♀️

New to the forum but not new to play guitar 🎸 (though if you heard me play, you’d probably think otherwise 😬🤣)

I play my ear, have since I was little - so hoping to get proper lessons to help merge the two eventually 👌🏻

Love singing & playing guitar, often find myself playing for hours after saying “I’ll be done in a minute” without even realizing it 😂🙈 music has always been a passion & a big part of my life and an amazing outlet for me 💞 so happy to have found Synner with the help of some good friends who are already here - I’ve apparently been living under a rock 😂🤌🏻

I look forward to talking to & getting to know you all 🤗

What I learned in 1 year of making music

So this is going to be a long thread but bear with me, it's at least going to be a fun read if nothing more :)).

So at the beginning of 2021, I decided to fully focus on making music. And a year or so later, I figured it's a good checkpoint to share some of the things I've learned as I make somewhat of a comeback here:
  • There are no shortcuts to sounding good - in the beginning, I was kinda lazy and focused on the results instead of the process; as a result, I used a lot of MIDI in places I shouldn't have, and while it sounded...good, it didn't sound natural; the only way to truly sound good is to record those damn guitars and only use MIDI in places where it could still work nicely (piano, strings, bass, drums); but you gotta make sure you humanize those notes; I learned that the hard way
  • What you want to write and sing may be wildly different than what you CAN write and sing - like many around here, I like Avenged Sevenfold, a lot; probably wouldn't be here if I didn't; and as much as I want to sing like M Shadows, at least at this moment in time, I can't; my voice is that of a baritone, which tends to sound better in the lower register (think Bono of U2, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran, Ghost, sort of anyway, etc. ); and while I can reach high notes through training, it's a bit difficult to make my voice sound as full without recording takes at lower octaves to add fullness to those damn lyrics :))
  • You cannot work around double-tracking your rhythm guitars - this is non-negotiable; I tried everything imaginable; you can't skip this step if you want your guitars to sound good
  • Music production is probably more important than what you write - this one's self-explanatory, but if your song sounds like a turd, no one's going to listen to it; not even you; music production is also a separate job on its own; and you gotta learn how to do it
  • The process is more important than the result - I hate that I have to agree with this one, I really do, but if you don't enjoy the process of recording your songs and producing them, it's going to make things a lot harder; it becomes easier to manage because, if you keep going and improving, you will start seeing amazing results from one song to the next
  • You need people to collab with - I hereby NOT summon someone from this lovely school that has managed to transform me from a wannabe musician to someone that can make actual full-fledged songs sound decent and figure out where they need improving; that student is mine, I'm keeping him :)) ; I mean, if he sees this and replies, that's on him, but I'm still keeping him \s; seriously though, another set of ears will help immensely;
  • Keep your ego in check - being proud of what you do is crucial, but don't let ego get in the way of allowing outside feedback that would help improve your craft; everybody deals with this one, me included, and it's a lot of work to keep it in check
  • People will judge the shit out of you - people will say you should get a real job and won't support you until it's cool to do so; never forget those who were at your side when you were no one (I hereby NOT summon another member from this community);
  • Social media is a cesspool that you must use in some form or another - I hate social media a lot, but it's honestly one of the few ways I can actually get people I don't know to listen to my stuff so...yeah
  • Last but not least, you will inevitably sound like other bands - another non negotiable one, sorry; you can use that as help to figure out which fans you could target in your social media stuff though

Hello!!

Hello everyone! My name is Cierra and I just got my first guitar and have been looking for a place/person to learn from. Never did I think my favorite guitarist would have a free site. I've played violin for 6 years and was concert master my final year of high school. So I know scales and reading music, but for guitar that's about it.🤣 I'm so excited to get started and learn how to play! ❤

Left hander playing right handed

Hello!

I was wondering if strumming with your weak hand is a disadvantage.

I'm a lefthander and at first it felt weird picking up the guitar right-handed, but now it doesn't really feel weird and rather natural (even though I can't play anything on it but an E major chord). Will I have issues in the long run when playing like this (strumming with right hand)? I play the drums right-handed and i've noticed that's not really an issue.

Thanks!

Positive Message For The Students, "Synner Days"

Hey there, my little kittens :)

It's your Momma Cat here. And I am taking a break from recording guitar tracks to dish a little bit of a positive message for you guys. I'm gonna try not to make this long. But it's me, so it probably will be.

First of all, I know SO many of you are going through some serious shit right now. And as I talk to you all off of the school, it has become apparent how much each and every one of you has similar issues. Family not being supportive, issues at home making it hard to focus, a loss, stress from taking on too many things at once, a friend of yours randomly blowing up at you, and after all the day's hard work you have ZERO motivation to practice or play, or even do what you love to do.
It's almost frightening how similar your situations are with one another. They're almost synonymous. So I want to tell you all a few things. A few minor things.

First of all, most of you know my mother died almost 5 years ago. That is five years I will never get back. Through this time, my life was a fucking blur. I became a vegetable for many reasons, and Holly ended up supporting me financially, emotionally and even sometimes cooked for me. My anxiety got so bad I had to actually sit in the break room at her work for 8 hours because the moment I was away from her, it literally felt like I was going to die.
Yes, I needed to heal. But I also went through a lot of family bullshit for the last TWO years that took so much out of me, oftentimes I truly contemplated suicide. @RoaringRowanThunderBender , @Alicia Willis , Syn and Holly know about that. Because of the same things you guys have mentioned.
You're fucking shot. You're emotionally drained. You're tired. You hurt. And your family or your friends (who are suppose to lift you up) cause bullshit that truly takes the last bit of you because there is no escape from it. And you checkout. Maybe permanently.
Please don't.
Listen, in 5 years I could have had my album completely done and paid for. I could have gotten my ass on to my real estate and right now I could be living in a nice fucking house, paid in cash. I ALSO could have had TWO books done, instead of struggling to finish this one. Even losing a pound a month, I could be 60lbs down by now. Which is WAY smaller than where I am now. I could be fluent in Italian. I could have my debt paid off completely.
But I don't. I don't have any of that.
Why?
People took my time from me.
Worse?
I let it happen.
I also let fear consume me.

Now, I find myself stressed with anxiety trying to "make up for lost time". I'm trying to cram 12 hour days in without breaks, that oftentimes I get so stressed I don't even want to start my day. I have no idea what to make a priority, and I feel like I'm losing my mind. Until just now I realized to just enjoy the ride. Stop planning, start doing.

Now this ties into what I'm now OFFICIALLY DUBBING "Synner Saturdays."

IF YOU DON'T START DOING THIS I WILL PERSONALLY WORK MY ASS OFF TO SELL A HOUSE AND MAKE YOU DO IT ANYWAY. YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO MAKE IT HAPPEN

Starting TOMORROW...
I want EVERYONE (who reads this) to use Saturdays as THEIR day for guitar, if you can. I know everyone teases me about Bill, but he made a really good point about guitar schools he's seen before. He said, "Online guitar schools are fucking awesome. But the problem of it is, is that the community vibe can get so strong, that oftentimes students feel more compelled to help each other instead of focusing on their own personal growth."
So on Saturdays, it would be wonderful if we all just took ONE day to focus on our own growth. We take time to watch @Andrei Moraru 's amazing theory videos. We take time to watch a lesson and post our progress. We take time to explore our guitar and post up something we learned.
I'm not saying that I'm not seeing this. Because I AM seeing it now more than ever.
But you all deserve to have one day (even if it's not Saturday) to dedicate to yourself. Even if it's just an hour of your time of the day.

Take of this what you want to. I'll be making a 'riff' category entitled "Synner Saturdays" and I'm going to be following it to see what you all start doing on there. This is just me trying to make sure you give yourself your time to grow. CLICK IT HERE
And lastly,
Don't let anyone steal your time. If you do, before you know it, you're going to be 33 (like me) and feeling like you have to cram 5 years of success into one year. And that, my friends, can't be done.

Love you...
XOXO,
Jak

Difficulty with fretting consistency

Hi all, I’ve noticed during practicing that sometimes my fretting is not very consistent. I’m rather new, but it is something I’d like to work on. Ironically I can pick rather accurately without looking even using alternate picking, etc but my left hand isn’t as coordinated. For the most part it is mainly my ring and middle finger, because my index and pinky are pretty accurate but the other 2 will sometimes lift or get in the way. Sometimes they just do their own thing.

Does anyone have any tips or exercises that I can add into my daily practice to get better at fretting accurately consistently?
