    QUESTION! Augmented Chords?

Diminished & Augmented chords are symmetrical. So each chord is just an inversion of the last. Augmented chords are built on Major 3rds. D to F# is a major 3rd. F# to A# is major 3rd. A# to D is a major 3rd – and we start all over again. So – Daug is D,F#,A#. F#aug is F#,A# & D. A#aug is A#, D &...

    Harmonic minor 3-note per string

Awesome! Really like the last one a lot. Using that as an altered scale is killer!

    I'm Giving up guitar sorry

At this point I would concentrate on playing ONLY things that make you happy. Just find the joy again. Don’t think of it as practice. You can always dig deeper if you want to. But for now – what makes you happy? Shredding jazz licks over country songs? 3 finger tapping over polkas? Playing power...

    I'm Giving up guitar sorry

Nobody can tell you what is right for you. You have to figure that out yourself. Back in the 90s I stopped practicing for about 5 years and only played necessary gigs. In the process I became a low-handicap golfer. I took time off in 2004-05 and wrote two novels, (one became a best seller)...

Loose wrists and how it is turning me into the guitarist I don’t want to be

Interesting stuff. There is definitely (at least for me) a different feel in my wrist for different styles. It’s important to be able to do both. The problem is in the transition. As with everything – it comes down to practicing. Practice a loose-wristed sweep that culminates in a long high bend...

Is it even possible to do a whole step bend on the D string?

Great advice here. I have nothing to add except to say that it is completely doable on the D string – both up and down. The A & low E strings need to be bent down only.

    My Very First Live Performance!!!!!

Great job! You will learn something from every performance. What to do, as well as what not to do. Like anything else, the more you do it – the better you’ll get.

ANOTHER question for Syn or Papa Gates regarding weaknesses

Ids – Thank you! I actually studied with Robin. Still see him whenever he is in LA. I have been paying Gyspy for many years. Syn & I are actually talking about doing an album in the future. My point was – I’m just very much out of practice. I think I could be “album ready” in about a month. Same...

How do I start playing different styles?

I think the first place to start is ALWAYS by listening to the music you want to play. There are hundreds of blues players and many different styles under the “blues umbrella”. Pick a song you like. Find out who that guy (or girl) is, and then work on that song and that style. Just learn it one...

    Played guitar live with Nickelback

CONGRATS! Lots of people tease about Nickleback. I have even done it myself – but always in jest. They have some great songs and are an amazing band. I’m so happy for you! Getting to play with those we admire is a rare gift!!!

ANOTHER question for Syn or Papa Gates regarding weaknesses

I know Syn is in the “black hole” of touring. A place where you work 2 hours a night and think you will have all kinds of time. In reality, instead of 22 hours “off”, it feels like you have 45 minutes between shows. You’re constantly tired and can’t catch up, (except for when you’re on stage)...
