    The Ultimate Reward

What a wonderful thread! You’re a fucking stud, Ed. And you’re 100% right. Jak is the heart and soul of this school. We have so many wonderful students here and Jak is the glue that keeps us all together. I didn’t know until today that Syn sent her a guitar. Coolest thing in the world! Makes me...

    How to play like syn

I will chime in here and say when I recorded the outro on Angels, Syn had just recorded a solo. He handed me his guitar, still plugged into his amp. Same set up. Didn’t change a thing. I started playing and he looked at me like – “How in the hell are you getting that sound to come out of my...

    Site Problems – Papa Gates

Haha! Well almost anything. Syn and I have discussed doing some songwriting videos. Songwriting is such a nebulous thing. You can analyze a song to death after it has been written, but I promise that analysis didn’t happen when the songwriter was writing it. So much happens by ear and feel – and...

    Papa Gates – Blues Lessons

Hi Gang! I have been working on new videos for the school, namely, over 2 hours of blues lessons that will cover theory, technique and application in several different genres. I’m excited to get that up and share my love for blues guitar with all of you! I’m about halfway done, so if there is...

    Site Problems – Papa Gates

Hey Everyone! Just checking in. My road schedule has been grueling over the past few months. I’m looking forward to dedicating some quality time to the school. We are experiencing some growing pains with the site in regards to video posting and comments. We will get it sorted out as quickly as...

Five Solos That Changed You As A Player

So I was thinking of the 5 solos that influenced me the most as a player. That is to say – the FIRST time I heard them, they changed my direction as a player. Here’s my five – with a brief explanation: 1. Green River CCR. I was listening to a lot of complicated solos when I was first learning to...

    Site back up!

I am not one to exaggerate. If anything, I try and understate things whenever possible. Trust me when I say this hack was a cluster-fuck of enormous proportions. I can’t begin to tell you how badly the site was messed up. Our team worked round the clock for weeks reading code LINE BY LINE to...

    learning ukulele as a guitarist

I play uke all the time. LOVE IT! Even done a few sessions on uke. It is tuned similar to guitar like DK said – GCEA – which would be like a capo on the 5th fret of a guitar – except the G is tuned an octave higher. So the 4th string (G) is a step away from the 1st string (A) – which is a bit...

Make Mistakes to Grow and Create Great Solos

Brilliant advice! You MUST allow yourself to make mistakes to grow. When I am practicing – ANYTHING GOES! That means that I will hit a ton of clams in the hopes of discovering some new territory. When I’m on a gig, I dial it back to 90% so I’m sure not to hit any really wrong notes. If it is a...

    How to apply music theory

As usual, Jak brings up some great points. Sometimes an overload of theory just gets in the way. Learn ONE concept – like learning the pentatonic scale in C (Am) in all 5 positions. Then spend a couple of weeks just jamming over an A blues jam track. Get comfortable in all 5 positions. Learn how...

Questions About Lesson 24 and 25

Just re-read your original question, Jak – which was about the pentatonic scale. So the notes in a D Major pent scale are D-E-F#-A-B. You can start the scale on any of these notes and it is still a D Major Pentatonic.

Questions About Lesson 24 and 25

You were right, Ids. You just didn’t give the whole picture. And the whole picture is confusing! lol

    Blues Theory

I didn’t hear The Meters version, but the Mayer version is pretty straight ahead. C Dorian. Cm-F (Key of Bb) Once in a while he plays a Bb/C which is just a sub for Cm.

Questions About Lesson 24 and 25

Yes and no. It really comes down to usage and application. You can play a D Major scale and start on any note in the scale and always be in D Major. OR you can use the exact same set of scales (D Major starting on D, D Major starting on E, D Major starting on F#, etc.) and be playing in...
