Captain Ed's AOTM - September: Def Leppard - On Through the Night

Joe's voice has been pretty shot for about 10 years or more, but I didn't think it was awful, considering 1/4 of drumming capacity is gone and both guitarists have been replaced. I'm glad Viv did the solo, as I think Phil would have destroyed the whole song with his. Glad to see them trotting...

    Nightmare tablature

It's funny, none of the tabs for Syn are ever accurate. The NOTES are there, but the tab/fingering is always off. He knows it. I don't have a specific correct tab in mind, but Syn is very heavy on economy picking and what a lesson here on the site refers to as 3-1-3 economy picking. Hope that helps.

Guitar is just nothing but frustration 24/7

Al;ways play standing up. I've been practicing that way for decades. Sitting down is for acoustic guitar.

Guitar is just nothing but frustration 24/7

Approaching it with stress WILL restrict you and slow you down - not even a question. Try a 5 or 10 minute meditation (the Calm app on your phone can help) before practice to help quell your failure anxiety.

    It's good to be back!

Can't go wrong with Randy leading the way. Except most of us guys can't pull off polka dots.

Guitar is just nothing but frustration 24/7

I understand, and you're not alone. Sometimes when you can't overcome an obstacle, you have to look for new or different solutions/approaches. A different teacher may help, or looking into some courses about pick mechanics. Troy Grady gets into so much detail that is can be overwhelming, but I...

Captain Ed's AOTM - September: Def Leppard - On Through the Night

As far as ballads on RetroActive go, I'm partial to From the Inside, but I feel you.

    Most Versatile Guitar?

Sure, or you can build a Kiesel that way!

    Most Versatile Guitar?

You may already have it. A guitar with two or more pickups and coil-tapping is about as versatile as you can get, unless you also add piezo pickup for acoustic-sounding tones.

    On Single-Pickup Guitars

No shortage of great players love the simplicity of 1 pickup, 1 volume, nothing else guitars. Like you say, it can spur creativity and finding manual ways to eke out different tones. Personally, I like three positions and not much else, but how different they are requires a more complicated...

    New Guitar Day!

    That is scorching. Love it!

Captain Ed's AOTM - September: Def Leppard - On Through the Night

1987's Hysteria was their biggest album. It sold by the crateload, and they still use it as their template for trying to capture success again. But they won't. Hysteria was a decent album, but it was a product of its time, and it's severely dated. The whole album SCREAMS late 1980s. It was...

And the 6 Magic Note Contest Winner is...

Like you said, the rules can get heavy, and you've placed it at a perfect time that new students can get musical and feel a taste of the joy of creativity! Still the king, Big Man!

    Does the site seem faster?

I regret to inform you that I haven't noticed a difference, at least not on the desktop version of the site.

A little version of The Stage acoustic solo

That's some amazing finger-picking, my friend! Well done!

Thanks for the inspiration on this one, PG! It's a KILLER lesson!

Sometimes I forget how old I am. :)

Captain Ed's AOTM - September: Def Leppard - On Through the Night

Hysteria and On Through the Night are so different, they may as well be by different bands. Seriously.

Captain Ed's AOTM - September: Def Leppard - On Through the Night

Anyone who knows me knows that I've been a Def Leppard fan for DECADES, and I still jam on plenty of their classic tracks. I really don't care for their new stuff, and a lot of the radio single fluff (Pour Some Sugar on Me, for example) I really don't like much at all, but if you listen to most...
