    Signature pickups active or passive?

Now 200% – they are definitely passive pickups. The Sustainiac in some of his guitars requires active circuitry, but Syn’s pickups are otherwise all passive.

@ids, parts of that reminded me of Revelation (Mother Earth) from Ozzy/Randy. Good stuff!

@richard, love the way you’re using delays to build up the intro riff there. Really aggressive sounding overall – I like it!

    Looking forward to it!

    Beginner question: The amp?

Hi Karen! Amps are like fingerprints – no two are alike, and that also goes for the people using them. A good rule of thumb is to start with all the knobs at the middle position (if they’re labeled 1-10, set them on 5, for example). Not the “volume” knob – don’t hurt yourself. Then just start...

@filip – thanks! Interestingly, I was never into RHCP (except a couple of the hits), or Bungle, or John 5!! Go figure! I’m glad you heard all that stuff in there, though! @dominik – you just became my new best friend! Share away!

@filip, that’s cool – i dig the vibe there. It’s got a real 80s “soundstrack to Miami Vice” feel to it. Look up the show if you’re not familiar. It was huge in the 80s for music and style.

This is a little older, with the backing track and arrangement dating back to an early band in 1991, and the leads and melodies coming about in about 2012. Finally, I was able to update the mix a little in 2017 when I learned how to trigger drum samples. This much excess is what happens when I...

    If I May? :)

This is why I’m here. To get put down by the Keymaster. I fuckin love it. No joke. Jak, I’m going to give back a little. I know you’re going into the studio soon, and don’t really know much about how things work there. I’m going to sit down and walk through basic DAW setup and recording a quick...

    If I May? :)

PS: Do you, and let the chips fall where they may. Wherever you wind up, “like Frankie said, ‘I did it My Way.'”

    If I May? :)

Your frustration reminds me of my gigging days in the 90s in Manhattan and the NY Metro area. Hundreds of nights of playing original music for the other bands on the bill and their bored girlfriends, while a bunch of guys playing half-assed covers of easy, cliched songs packed em in, night after...

    Anchoring your pinky

Soon after, I picked up my Les Paul, just to noodle, and despite it having pickup rings, I noticed as I was playing that I did NOT anchor at all, so for me, it’s really and truly a “sometimes” thing, and I’d bet money it has very little to do with exactly what I’m playing either. But then, I...

    Anchoring your pinky

I had to pick up a guitar and check, haha. I definitely use it sometimes, but I think for me it’s more of a byproduct of laying that pinky down as part of my overall muting strategy. It tends to be fairly “loose,” more of a just laying it down on the pickup trim ring or something. As two of my...

    Ok here we go !!

The Final Countdown! You’re well on your way! I find that with beginners, especially when it comes to melody, I need to be told what they’re playing, because it’s just so mangled I can’t recognize it. I *totally* got this one right away. You’re showing good command of timing. When your fingers...

    Ok here we go !!

Hmm. Okay, so I went to Vimeo to see what’s what. Opened a random video, clicked the paper airplane in the upper right corner of the video for “sharing,” and then clicked the link in the “Link” box. It highlighted the whole thing. Then I hit CTRL-C to copy, and came here, and I will hit CTRL-V...
