Dude, that’s an awesome tribute. @syn would be proud!

Give Me A Chord Progression and I'll Guess The Key! (Rick Beato study)

I think when you’re talking rock, you’re often talking “general” key, because a note or part of a chord stepping outside a normal key is kind of the “rebellion” part of rock and roll. 😉

what it's the most painful and hardest skill to play for you?

Anything below the 7th fret that spans more than 4 frets. It’s a tough stretch for me.

    Heretic Solos

Seems like a very mild/light flanger effect. More than likely, it was added in the mix, either as part of Syn’s vision or the mixing engineer’s. This is one my favorite songs on the HTTK record. The riff is a good stretch for my short sausage fingers, and is fun to play.

    Rock on the Range

My daughter called me last night all excited about the lineup for this show and how we should go, and I had to tell her it was a one-time festival show and it’s 2,000 miles away from home. “There may come a day when we can afford to fly across the country to go to a concert, but that day won’t...

Fractal Axe fx and AX8 users

ML Labs and Ownhammer seem to be the biggies. http://shop.fractalaudio.com/Software_Downloads_s/54.htm I’ve gotten the Misha Mansoor ML Zilla pack, not because I want to djent, but because I know ML and Misha have specific quality requirements, and I wasn’t diasappointed. Honestly, though, the...

    Baby Pictures

This is one of our original songs from the same band, from a 1995 demo. Our singer wasn’t fantastic, but whatever. I wrote most of the music on this one, and played all of the lead guitar, except for the solo at 7:00. The solo at 5:35 might be my favorite thing I’ve recorded. I think I also...

Yeah, 1994. I was 24, which is how old you are now, Andrew. Funny how time goes. The last gig I played was in April 1997, and I’m on the cusp of playing out again – our bass player is younger than the rest of us, he was not born yet when I played my last gig. Looking forward to playing out in...

So, as I’ve said before, I’ve been playing a long time. I took a bunch of years off, however, cutting my hair, growing a family (and a belly), and well, it happens, right? But I came across this old video my drummer sent me of an extended improvised guitar solo in a live set from December of...

@calvin, check out Conquer/Divide. Drummer kicks ass and the songwriting is phenomenal. Not as strong in the guitar department, but the songs are there.

Is my guitar tone getting there?

    Awesome, @jak!

Guitar Center Going Out of Business and The Music Industry

I can tell you guys that back when my prom happened – the height of 80s hair metal, 1988 – it was all pop music stuff and maybe “Angel” by Aerosmith or something. It was not a searing metalfest. Clubs were the same way, playing Taylor Dayne and God knows what else. You always had to go to a hole...

Is my guitar tone getting there?

Hard to tell for sure. It sounds good, but it also sounds like there might be a touch too much low bass frequency in there. It’s definitely thick and mean sounding!
