  • Question
Changing the way I hold my pick

I have been playing guitar for roughly 15 years now. Might I add on and off but I’ve recently noticed that my thumb, holding the pick, is curved in an awkward bend position. It allows me to tremolo pick pretty fast/pinch harmonics are no issue, however the pick becomes less stable and moves quite a bit compared to what I am practicing with the “correct” way to hold a pick now. In your opinion is it worth to even start from scratch or should I just continue on playing this way?

  • Question
How to train little finger?

Hello everyone! I've been playing guitar for almost 5 years, but recently started to use pinky finger(because all guitarists i inspire playing with it). But i have a problem with all of my fingers - they all a little bit curved, especially pinky. I saw how Syn play with his pinky independently of his ring finger. What advices can you tell me about training pinky to play independently of ring finger?

Synyster Gates Interview!

I saw this pop up on Google and I really thoroughly enjoyed reading it. To be honest, I found myself feeling the same way about modern guitar work.

Practicing Wall

Hey everyone. First time posting here, but thought I might as well float this off into the universe.

Sat down to practice this morning and have been going through the etudes, particularly focussing on my alternate picking. About 45 mins into running through them all, I start to begin feeling like I'm not making any progress or that I've hit this "wall" in terms of whether or not I'm actually making any progress by continuing.

Was just wondering if anyone can relate to this and offer their suggestions/insights and maybe what's worked for them. I try to do things to recharge my focus like practicing in 20 min chunks, with 10 minute breaks where I do something relaxing like read or just lay on my bed haha. I do this to try and re-centre and regain my focus.

I guess the main thing I am also wondering is how long does one typically have to stick with a particular exercise/lick/riff until they've mastered it and can just execute it without too much maintenance. I feel like I keep coming back to these etudes over the years and am always back at square one. I know consistency is a big thing here, but am just wondering what everyone thinks in terms of, is sitting down and working on 2-3 exercises for like 4/5 hours even beneficial? Or is doing that pointless as you'll be beyond the point on making any returns on your investment in time, I guess the analogy I think of is overtraining muscles in a gym.

Anyway, hope that all makes sense haha! looking forward to hearing everyones thoughts and suggestions.

Keep rocking!

Guitar Why Does A7X Track with TWO Tones

If anyone here has engineering experience, I’m wondering if you can answer a question about A7X guitar tracking:

Lots of their music has the rhythm guitars quad tracked, with two guitar tones (a left and a right of each tone). One tone has boosted highs and a lot of fizz, while the other is a standard mid-heavy guitar tone.

Can someone answer why they do it this way? Is it simply an industry standard for this type of music, just a way to make the guitars cut through together, or maybe a unique decision by the band maybe?

I’m trying to understand the overall reasoning behind it. Why not just get the tone from one amp? Lots of band simply double or quad track a single tone.

Thanks for all your responses, folks.

Quitting Spotify/Album recommendations/

I'd love your guys thoughts/opinions on this!

(Apologies in advance for the long rambling story)

So I was talking to a friend the other day about the way we got into our favourite bands, back in the day when music wasn't so easily available in an instant on Streaming apps, and it made me realise just how little I've really connected with any of the new music I've got into lately on Spotify, vs when I had to go out and buy the physical album (with the whole ritual that surrounds listening to it, the callofane picking, artwork book, remembering that track 4 was your favourite etc)

It's like I'll hear an amazing song on Spotify, but I just won't feel any emotional attachment or fascination towards the song or band because I feel like it's this digital, rented, experience, and the lack of limitation to what I can listen to leads me to be less appreciative of what's there because theres an abundance of choice - if that makes sense?

So this got me thinking - I desperately want to get the feeling back I had at 12-13 as a music fan, when I actually had to put effort into consuming music & It was more limited.

My plan is basically to limit myself to a few albums a month but to buy the CD and really soak it all in properly - and to quit my Spotify Subscription.
The question is, which albums should I buy? Also does anyone else feel this way when they stream music?

Apologies for the large essay, thoughts are appreciated!

Guitar Is there any Schecter Synyster Special with Sustainiac?

Hello Synners,
My name is Elieve. I'm Javi's mom. I'm borrowing my son, Javi's account here.
First of all, I want to thank you all Synners here who has help my son to be who he is now. You guys are all the best. Thank you so much for all of your kindness.

The second is, I would like to ask my question above, because I haven't found the answers on google. Well, we found an adv on IG for a secondhand black Schecter Synyster Special, that said made in south korea. It's a rare item here, that's why next monday we're planning to check it out on the shop. My Husband and I went on google to learn more about this guitar. I also watched Ed's vid about how to taking care of FR, because we haven't got any FR guitar before. But there's something that bothers my mind. The guitar has a sustainiac on the neck. I googled and all were said Syn Special has SD invader but no sustainiac. I still haven't found any clue of it. That's why I decided to ask this here by myself, because some info will be missed if it was told by an 8yo kid. 😅

Below were some the pics that were given by the shop. Do you think it's legit?I'm sorry, no headstock photo yet. But it was said just like Syn Special description. I will check it out next monday.

Thank you so much for your help. 😄

Learning piano to help with guitar?

So I've been in a rut with guitar for the past year or so and I feel a big reason for it is my lack of understanding of music theory.

As a result, I decided I want to attempt to learn more music theory and pick up another instrument. I chose the piano because it has always interested me.

The problem I'm finding right now is I'm struggling to understand sheet music and the basic of how to play the piano. All the resources I found for learning are paid and I find that rather annoying. Anyone have any good resources for beginners to piano? I'm hoping a better understanding of a pianos musical scale, as well as sheet music and music theory, can translate well to playing the guitar.

Plus, almost every guitarist I look up to can play piano and I feel there's a connection there.
