Upside Down Whammy Bar SRV

Is this normal and what kind of effect does this have on the sound/guitar?

0-SRV upside down whammy bar.png

The motion made to use it is different so the sound is a bit altered too, what I'm guessing.
Not sure if I remember it right but he liked his guitar cause it was sturdy among other things.

What do you guys think or has anyone tried it?

I just noticed it, the screenshot is from a concert video from 1985, Live at Montreux.

Take care! 🕊️

The Rad Synner Show #3 - Hector Trejo

Hey everyone!

Some you might have heard his name there and there but now, I really want all of you to get more familiar with him! My next guest will be the one and only @Hector Trejo!!!!!

Hector has been member of the Synner family since the very beginning and has massively contributed to this community in more ways than others. Tomorrow, Friday March 25th, he will be releasing his first record called ''Beyond Boundary'' and I want to support him as he's one of us! As such, I will be doing a little something extra for this edition of ''The Rad Synner Show'': we will be doing a listening party of his record!

The live stream will start at 15h EST on Saturday March 26th with the album playing from start to finish and as soon as it ends, him and I will directly jump into a talk to dive into himself, his album and lots of other topics like his insane Synyster Gates guitar collection!

I'll see y'all on the stream!

  • Question
Reverse Bend Tips

Hi, I've been working on this technique here and there, I like how it sounds.

The trouble I'm having is when having a pre-bent 7th fretted note with my annular finger and want to drop the bend down releasing it to the 5th fret.
Hopefully I explained it right.
When I'm doing it often the sound isn't smooth or it dissipates.
I may also be misinterpreting the written notations when I see them.

I want to try to be able to do it multiple times in succession but I think I'm doing something wrong.

A video would probably help show the dilemma, tomorrow I'll get one-up.

Thanks! :rock-hand:

Decent Questions (ep. 1): What the hell is up with note names? March 24th 5pm EST / 9pm GMT

A little while ago I pitched my new stream idea to you guys, and well the time is here to actually do it.

Tomorrow at 5pm EST / 9pm GMT I will try to tackle the confusing mess that is note names and their variations in different countries. When that is all done we will also pick a question for the next 'episode', so if you have any wacky music related questions be sure to bring them!

Hope to see you all there :geek:

Obligatory "Lets Talk About the New Ghost Album" Thread

Ok, so I thought that thing was lit. Meliora is my nostalgia album and our personal gateway albums tend to be hard to eclipse for nostalgia factor. (CoE, Rust in Peace, Appetite, Tragic Kingdom, Blue Album, Songs in the Key of Life etc for me) But dayum if I don't think that this could be their next best album

Everyone has been saying the intros to 'Spillways' and 'Griftwood' sound like the intros Bon Jovi's 'Runaway' and Van Halen's 'Aint Talkin Bout Love' respectively. I agree and nice nods to, if not quotes of those bands. Here's some stand out tracks and thoughts on this album.

Spillways - Tobias was right this should have been the single, very appealing to introduce all audiences to this album. Can't get enough of this song.
Twenties - Wow, so original. Aladdin style intro and it reminds me of hearing ALPoH for the first time and how original that was. This was my favorite of the 3 singles they pre-released.
Griftwood - This stood out as my favorite track upon first top to bottom listening of the album. I think the sound is so crisp and this is an ode to songs like 'Magesty' and 'Absolution' on Meliora. Just like those songs it's a back half album song that represents something of a middle ground between a simple 3 minute catchy pop single and the 7 minute epic track that feels like a workout. This kind of song along with 'Magesty' and 'Absolution' are the kind of tracks that push me over the edge from "yea Ghost is cool" to "I freaking love this band forever!"

Honorable mention to the guitar tracks in 'Watcher in the Sky', and the epic closing track. I love when bands know how to kill it with a epic long closer or penultimate tune. There's this one band that seems to do this on every single album, I can't think of their name right now, but I'm positive they "Exist". Anyone want to "Save Me" and think of the name or are all of your memories also "MIA" at the moment?

Thoughts on the album? By all means discuss!

All caged shapes in one scale pattern.

As an addition to the Caged system I decided to finally write down all the chords in one scale shape. The idea isn't new to me, I always saw the chord shapes in the scale patterns but I haven't combined it with caged yet. I might do this with the other shapes as well. Maybe it's useful, maybe not with Caged, but it can't hurt to share 😅

Hi, my name is Amadeus

Hello extended family, my name is Andrew “Amadeus” Still and i’m super excited to begin engaging with this community. I’m 23 and i’ve been playing guitar since I was 15; I’m still learning every day :) I currently teach guitar, piano and pedal steel lessons at Guitar Center in Texas. I studied Jazz Improv and Neuroscience at Baylor University but dropped out to chase my dreams. I also am a complete theory geek.

Avenged Sevenfold was the band, particularly Gates guitar playing (along with Buckethead) that inspired me to pick up the electric guitar and was the genesis for my musical passion. My first concert ever was also A7X which might have been one of the greatest days of my life! They are assuredly my favorite musical group of all time still to this day. I started learning from this school the day it came out but have never posted anything; i owe this website A TON. I recently acquired a deathbat club NFT because i want to contribute and really do my best to engage with this community on the deepest level i can. i can’t afford the fanciest ones, but i chose one that spoke to me :)

My mom sometimes calls me Amadeus because i have the same birthday as Mozart and i play way too much music, so it has kinda become my musical alter ego. I felt called to come and engage with this community and share the amalgamation of knowledge i have acquired in my journey, which has undoubted been deeply influenced by this community itself already. I also want to learn more and continue to be influenced by like-minded individuals such as yourself.

I have always been a lurker on the interwebs, and this is where that stops.

i plan to put up some videos/posts very soon sharing knowledge on topics that i have personally had a hard time finding information about including modal chord progressions, superimposing chords over other chords in a meaningful way, modulations, circle of fifths playing, and all that other really juicy shit :D

I also write songs in many styles from grunge and jazz to folk and classical piano; I have about 40 and i would love to share them with y’all soon and hear y’all’s feedback.

Anyways, enough about me! i would love any ideas on how to get as involved as possible and be as helpful as possible in the community so all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated :)

I hope we all become best friends and partners in musical crime,
Amadeus

PS yes i wear a cowboy hat all the time, yeehaw Texas mfers

🔥 Introducing ''Synner Presents''!!! 🔥

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing good!

I come today to introduce a new initiative to add more life to SynTv. And so without further ado, I want to introduce to all of you ''Synner Presents''!

''Synner Presents'' will be a channel on SynTv to which the purpose is to feature special classes or streams or hangouts lead by members of the community! But in order to appear on this channel, there are certain steps:

1) Send me a message pitching your idea: You will see that now on the right side of the site, there's this little widget that says ''wanna stream on SynTv? Send a Radu a DM''. That will simply link you to the ''send a message'' page and there type my name and send me a solid pitch of what you want to do.

2) We schedule a meeting: After first contact is done, we will then organize a 1 on 1 on google meet so I can get a better idea of who you are, what you can do and if the stream is doable.

3) Training for the stream: When we figured out that you are a match for streaming, I will show you how to navigate the streaming options as well as helping you out with the content and preparation.

4) Go live: Pretty self explanatory.

The goal is to make it more accessible for people to come and stream. I don't want SynTv to appear like it's a private club and that you need to know someone to be on there. No, everyone will have the same way to apply for a stream. Everyone will receive the same opportunity and go through the same process. I know there is a lot of talent that is underneath this community and I will do my best to showcase it and put it under the spotlight! 🥂

DISCLAIMER!

Sending me a message does NOT guarantee you going live. There are many factors that come into play. My job for SynTv is mainly as a curator. To put as much talent as possible on there as well as put the spotlight on a variety of people. But there are things I am looking for. A good stream isn't something that is easy to do. And the truth is that not everyone is good in front of the camera. Not everyone has the presence and the personality to stream.

And so in the long term when SynTv will become an open platform this won't matter anymore. In the meanwhile, while we are still building it up, there will be a way to do things. And those ways will of course be changing as we adapt to the ever new challenges that arise.
My promise is that I will always sincerely do my best to be fair, respectful and open to any request or feedback that is sent to my direction!

But with all that being said, I'm looking forward to keep on building upwards this community and have all of grow together and have a great time on SynTv!

I'll see y'all around!

Happy Birthday Alicia!!!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to take a second today to wish a heartfelt happy birthday to one of the wonderful member of the moderation team, @Alicia Willis !!!!

She is one of the most wonderful person that I've ever met in my life and has been such an integral part of Synner since the very foundation of this site. And so, I believe it's just right to put the spotlight on her today to underline how much of an amazing person she is and how much she means not only to me but the entire community so please join me in wishing her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! 🎆

- Rad

Thank you!

Yo fam, just wanted to express my thanks to everyone involved in the stream today. Whether you built it, participated in it, or simply kicked back and watched, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I wanna do big things here. I want to create REAL value for all of you. Not just value that you rent from this platform, but value that you own and can take with you to help pave the straightest path to all of your goals.
I want to provide insight and tools that you may have never thought to apply or perhaps have never heard of.

Most important, I want to build this WITH you. I want you to experience building a beautiful home that you are proud of. A home that is accomplishing what other homes dream of. An experience that will supplement every journey you take in your beautiful lives.

Lastly, enough of the sweet stuff-LETS FUCKING GO🦾

I need your (music related) questions!

So over the past weeks I have been kind of on the hunt for a good streaming format that isn't just me fiddling with my guitar or making stuff in Blender (don't worry, I will continue those as well) and I think I have finally found something I am comfortable with that could also actually be interesting/entertaining to watch.

Once every 1-2 months I wanna do a 'show' called Decent Questions (get it, iridecently -> decent ;)) where I take question(s) that I, or someone from the community has asked and try to answer it to the best of my capabilities. Now these questions can be as strange or niche as you want them to be, there really are no stupid questions. The only thing is I do want them to be music related.

Just some examples that popped into my head:
  • Why are notes named after letters and who thought of that?
  • Does listening to classical music really make kids smarter?
  • Why do people develop different tastes in music?
And now my appeal to you: Give me all your questions and also let me know if this idea at all sounds interesting to you :geek:

Performing Live - Different Perspectives

So this morning, as I was doomscrolling, I came across two articles on Ultimate Guitar where two quite accomplished guitar players talk about stagefright and preparation for performing live. They're TOTAL OPPOSITES and I thought that wonderfully illustrated how there really is no "one size fits all" answer here - we each find our own comfort zone.

First, we have Joe Satriani. You know him, or at least you should. Joe says, "I think, sometimes, if you prepare too much, when things go wrong, as they always do, it's too jarring. It's sort of an interesting protective mechanism not to be too well planned. So that when things go wrong, you go, 'Okay, I'll just play with that,' you know?"

On the other side, we have Mark Holcomb, from Periphery. Certainly much less well known worldwide than Satch, but any young guitar player would be WISE to know him and his work. On the same subject, Mark says, "The thing with being on stage, and having the courage to prepare for it - I always look at it as preparing for a presentation, right? If you're well-read and well prepared, and you have everything mapped out in your head, because you spent hours and hours and hours - not cramming – but learning over time, and making it so everything is second nature, as opposed to something which you have to actively call back and forth from in your head, things is going to be way more effortless."

Both have a lot of great stuff to say, so I recommend reading both articles with your performing guitar player hat on.

I think Syn falls more in the middle here, and so do I. I can't speak for Syn, but for myself, I am a firm believer in TONS of hours of rehearsal to make things second nature, but I also think that should include allowing space for improvisation and trying a lot of things out in rehearsal to get a feel for what KIND of thing may work and where it might work. I am the furthest thing from a "play it exactly the same every time" kind of musician, and I got there on purpose. It was a conscious choice, just like Satch and Mark made their conscious choices. I think Syn is like that too, only he does it more betterer than me - If you watch any live A7X, Syn NEVER seems to play the solos note for note - he gets the meat of it and then plays in the sandbox with it.

So, for those of you with experience gigging, what's your philosophy and practice?

For those who aspire to gig, what do you think your comfort zone would be here?

THERE ARE NO WRONG ANSWERS!

New guitar-quality control

I got my new custom S a day ago. And I noticed that the quality control Is super low. There are parts on the binding that are colored and scratched. Does anyone have any problems like that? It's strange that a guitar in that price range has something like that... I'm a bit disappointed

Hey from the UK! Give me your motivation ideas!

Hey,

My name‘s Ivan. I’m hitting the big 30 this year… scary stuff. I’ve hit a massive dip in my enjoyment of playing guitar over the past 4-5 years. I’m hoping actively learning again using resources like this site will help to give me that enjoyment back!

I play in a couple of bands, but gigging feels like more of a chore post lockdown!

How do you guys and gals stay motivated?

I occasionally throw some vids up here for anyone that is interested. https://youtube.com/c/IvanThomasWilliams
