Hey everyone!
My name is Natan, or as most people online know me as, Steve. I'm from Israel 😄
I've been an Avenged Sevenfold fan for over 10 years now, as well as a drummer for around 6 years.
I've just recently started playing the guitar (1 years in a few weeks)- I have a Syn GA SC Acoustic and a lovely PRS Custom SE 24.
Can't wait to start learning from the best teachers, Papa Gates and Syn 😍 Aswell as learning from everyone on the forums!

I'm also the proud owner of one of Syn's 1/1 Deathbats, "Mother" 🤩

This beautiful piece of art grants me (Everything redeemable once a year):
-A free SG played guitar
-A private lesson with SG
-Premium Access to Synner (I'm guessing Legend/Legend+?)
-Synner loot box

Very excited to be here and feel free to ask me anything! 🤘🏼

Hello!

I am new to this site, seemed too good to be true at first when I heard about it, but apparently it's not!

First started listening to Avenged when origins dropped on Black Ops 2 with the Shepherd of Fire intro clip.

I've been a drummer for 11 years right now and decided to learn guitar to get a basic knowledge of what guitarists, bassists... actually do. I have a little understanding on music theory but close to none.

See y'all around!

Syn Special Day 2 Restring setup

This is continuation of Syn s
Special Day 1 setup. I forgot to mention i did a bit of customization and swapped the tone knobs of the Syn Custom to the Syn Special. I think it looks more badass. Also the Syn special has Syns signature on the back of the headstock, whereas the Syn Custom does not. Very interesting aesthetic choice.

Anywho I removed the metal bar just below the machineheads where the strings are threaded through.

removed the locking nuts

inserted a xbox 360 battery pack(its a perf fit) under the floating bridge to raise the bridge ( you must have something under the bridge in the bored out space below the floating bridge otherwise the springs will pull it very hard into that space, making it impossible to change the strings)

Removed the strings now that they werent under stress. much safer this way

Used FLITZ metal polish to polish the bridge (sort of a success and i wasnt gonna take apart the FR to polish it piece by piece lol)

Polished the Body

Polished the frets

Oiled the frets with BORE oil

Clipped the ends of the strings to insert the strings into the bridge

Tightened them all into the bridge and did pull tests on each string to ensure their secured positions (it suuucks when you remove the battery and the strings pop out of the saddles)

wound each string on its corresponding peg and tightened with the drill as seen in the pics

Stretched each string individually and then dippped and dived the bridge with the trem bar until the string no longer came out of tune

Checked intonation, string height, playability, buzziness (hardly any), bridge float.

Reattached locking tuners

Reattached the metal bar

Clipped the excess string atop the headstock

Checked the tuning one more time

Marveled at its beauty and the good job i did

Hung it up upon the wall.

7 String MKH setup

Ive been pretty busy setting up my guitars for the past 3 days. Within this post, youll see my process for setting up my 7 string Hardtail MKH Epiphone Les Paul Custom.

From beginning to end i remove the strings, use TUNE IT, a saddle and nut lubricant(haha), polish the body, metal polish (FLITZ metal polish)the frets, oil the fretoboard with BORE oil, slap the La Bella 10-64s on, stretch them until they no longer come out of tune, check intonation, check and adjust string height, and clip the ends of the strings.

Two Students, One Song - Hector Trejo featuring Simon Eichinger

Two of our more gifted students have dug into the lead single from Hector's debut album.

@Hector Trejo has been a student and active member of the site going back to the very beginning. Though he's not here often now, that's partly because he's been working on this debut album, and partly because he's been working directly with Syn on something many of you have been begging for. More to come on that at a future date.

@SimonEichinger has been a quieter member here, but with only six years playing under his belt, it's hard to call him anything but "wunderkind." His technique and creativity blow my mind.

Check them out below, and look for Hector's upcoming album on your storefront or streaming platform of choice.

Hello Everyone

Hi all! I'd like to introduce myself as I've been rather active albeit not posting much because I don't have much to offer at the moment.

I generally go by my nickname Erv, which is what you can call me if ya want. I'm 27 and I've been playing guitar for about 3 whole weeks now, and I gotta say, it feels amazing. I suck but being able to play music just feels special. I've been rocking out with a cheapo les paul style guitar and I use Bias FX 2 w/ a Scarlett Solo to get all my tones. It's been working out super well for me, and I love it.

My day job is a software engineer for a big internet infrastructure provider. I do mainly backend work so creating the actual platforms themselves that websites, and such are hosted on. I live outside Atlanta, and I'm rather new here. Just moved here last June and it's been pretty cool. I was born in Texas to an Army dad originally from Huntington Beach and we moved around a bit because of the Army.

Currently learning the CAGED system and it's been really fun. Bar chords are hard :) I usually practice around 2-3 hours per day because I am really excited about getting better. My fingers are already calloused to hell so I don't even feel the strings anymore which is nice. For my first song I'm learning For Whom The Bell Tolls. I can play a good 80% of it, however, the 3-2-1-0 power chord progression at the beginning is really beating me up. I can't seem to move up the neck fast enough, but other than that it's all good. I also started learning the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine which is a lot of fun to play and I seem to use it as a picking exercise more than learning the song.

Anyways, I've rambled enough. This seems like a great community with a ton of super supportive users! I love that Syn and Papa put this all together because it has been incredible for me so far, and many others I'm sure. I hope to learn a lot and contribute as much as I can too, all while having a great time.

Thank you all! 🦇

Songs that changed your life or helped you through tough times

So while I continuously delay my next installment in Music Theory Requests because I suck in front of a camera, I have a bit of a different question for you all.

What song or songs kind of changed your life for the better? Every one of us probably has at least one song they can safely say inspired them to change something in their life for the better.

I'll start, by naming a few of them
  • Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold - back in 2014 I was kind of in a dilemma regarding what I wanna do in life; after 4 years of college in which everything I heard revolved around working in a corporation, I thought I would love it; turns out I didn't and one day, while I was in the subway and had this song playing, I had one epic moment; seriously, the chorus was playing, the doors of the subway opened and for whatever reason, there was a stage in the middle of the subway platform (there was some event going on); everything kinda made sense and I never forgot that moment to this day; I knew I had to go back to music someday
  • This Is Letting Go by Rise Against - back in 2016, while I was stuck at the same company as the previous song, I was in a miserable project again, with a toothless team leader and an even more annoying teammate; you know, the passive-aggressive kind; after arguing with both of them for the past 2 days, not knowing whether or not I should seek out new pastures, this song played in my playlist of songs; and for the whole 3 minutes and 41 seconds of it I just stood there, listening to it lyric by lyric, realizing that I too had to let go of that workplace; years later, I still return to this song whenever I feel stuck to see if gives me the same feeling as 4 years ago
  • What Happens Tomorrow by Duran Duran - this was my go-to song before every college exam; there is something so uplifting about it
I'll be sure to add some more examples down the line when I remember them .

So, what songs have made your life better or easier?

How do you make practice enjoyable?

I was reading through articles and came across the following quote:

When people are learning instruments, they should be encouraged and advised: if they say they don’t enjoy their practice, I always say, well, FIND a way to enjoy it.” ~ John Williams

We’ve all read and heard about how important it is to enjoy your practice, and we’ve seen the tips that tell you to make it sound musical, to take a break, and get a snack. Plus all the tips for routines.
But how do you actually achieve that? Aside from playing your favourite songs.

What’s your trick that makes you look forward to practice? (Or to get you started?)

  • Question
Picks shapes and sizes

Yes, I'm spamming the site today. No, I'm not sorry. 😂

There are no musicstores around here so I'm looking online for guitar picks, but it's hard to find the sizes. (Length and width)
I did find this image and figured out the picks I'm looking to get are 26mm (Dunlop jazz iii)
Are the sizes and shapes roughly the same for all brands? And can someome confirm these shapes are in scale with each other?

Howdy y’all!

Howdy! My name is Zach and I am currently living in Nashville, TN. I’ve admired Synsters style of playing for years now and really wanting to take a deep dive into his uniqueness.

Here’s a cover of Bat Country some years ago. Hope y’all enjoy and can’t wait to be apart of the community 🤟

How do I turn scales into solos?

So as of recently I just learned the major scale and I’ve known pentatonic scales for years but I have no clue how to turn scales into solos. Are there any rules of what I can and can’t do? Can I skip strings? Or do I just use the notes in the scale and mix them up any way I want? I’m lost as you can tell :ROFLMAO: I’d love to write my own stuff but I feel like not knowing how to apply what I learned into songs is a problem! Anything will help thanks!!

Well, let's just that this was simply a dazzling entry!!! Melanie clearly has a very distinct style to herself and showed us how sparkling the Synner lifestyle can be by combining both! We were really blown away by the jacket and the guitar and we wondered... who would shine most under the spotlight between Syn and her?

Melanie will receive 3 months of Legend+ upgrade plus a custom made leather bracelet designed and crafted by our very own @Dominik Gräber

This entry simply blew us all away. When we looked at it, we really felt like it captured the essence of Synner and the clothing line so perfectly. Anna used her immense talent in makeup to be creative and transform herself into a ghostly shaped entity and we LOVED her use of head accessories and the Synner bomber jacket. Is she praying for forgiveness? Probably not. I'm guessing she's praying to get her hands on some dope Synner merch from the new drop and that's exactly what she's gonna get!!!

Anna will receive 1 item from the new drop of her choice, 3 months of Legend+ upgrade as well as a Contest winner Banner added to her profile.

  • Question
CAGED system

Recently finish the lesson of the CAGED system part 1, and at the end it is indicated that the same can be done with shapes A, G, E, D

I have 2 questions

1. To continue I must learn the pentatonic and major scales of each one?

2. To make the pentatonic and major scales, is it the same? in terms of frets, that is,will it depend on the shapes I touch(C, A, G, E, D? Higher or Lower

My English is not very good so I hope you can understand me and can help me

Note: I can say that for the C form, I have learned the pentatonic and major scales

Thank you

Theory Request #4 - Building basic chords + chords of a scale

1. Topics of discussion

In this one, we're gonna take a look at how chords are built and what chords are part of major scales and minor scales. So, get on the square and on the level, and let's go.

2. Understanding thirds

In music, a third is a musical interval comprised of 3 different notes. Musical Intervals are of course measured between two distinct notes but in order for that interval to be a third, the total number of notes, including the two, must be 3. So in essence, we have the starting note, one in the middle, and the end note.

Musical intervals are usually measured between notes from a major or minor scale and thirds are no different. We have two types of thirds:
  • major thirds - which occur when the first and second notes are separated by 1 step (or 2 frets on your guitar) and the second and third notes are also separated by 1 step (also 2 frets on your guitar); such an example is C-E, because C-D is one tone and D-E is another tone.
  • minor thirds - which occur when the first and second notes are separated by 1 step (or 2 frets on your guitar) and the second and third notes are separated by 1 half-step (1 fret); such an example is D-F, because D-E is one tone and E-F is a half-step; the tonal distances can be swapped (i.e. E-G is still a minor third, with E-F being the first 2 notes, which are separated by 1 half-step)
3. Triads and basic chords

In music, a triad is obtained by playing 3 notes at the same time. Now these notes can be any notes, but in our case, we are interested in 4 particular types:
  • major triads - formed by playing 3 notes, the first 2 forming a major third and the second two forming a minor third; one such example is C-E-G
  • minor triads - formed by playing 3 notes, the first 2 forming a minor third and the second two forming a major third; one such example is D-F-A
  • augmented triads - formed by playing 3 notes, the first 2 forming a major third and the second two also forming a major third; one such example is C-E-G#
  • diminished triads - formed by playing 3 notes, the first 2 forming a minor third and the second two also forming a minor third; one such example is B-D-F
What does this have to do with anything you ask? Well, in order to play a basic chord (i.e. major, minor, augmented, or diminished), it's enough to play the corresponding triad formed on the note.

Of course, when it comes to guitar, the triad is not always present. For example, in the D major chord, which can be played as D-F#-A, The A, while being present, is in a lower octave than F#.

4. Chords of a scale

Major scales have 7 different notes, and therefore, each major scale has a total number of 7 different chords. The minor scale functions in a similar manner.

But what chords are part of the major scale? Well, the answer is simple. If we are to take a look at what type of triad can be on each note of a major scale, then that will give us the corresponding chord type. Let's visualize this for the C major scale:

I

See the correspondence between triad type and chord type? The triad type also gives you the chord type.

Let's now play all the chords of the C major scale:

E|---0---1---0---1---3---0------|
B|---1---3---0---1---3---1--3---|
G|---0---2---0---2---0---2--4---|
D|---2---0---2---3---0---2--3---|
A|---3-------2---3---2---0--2---|
E|-----------0---1---3----------|

For minor chords, the chord types are the same, just in a different order. Let's take a look at the chords of the A minor scale:

Introducing myself

Hey everyone! Welcome to the Family, I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I go by David or Dave either. I’m delighted to have this opportunity to come here and learn with all of you who are also still progressing, advancing and new and climbing through the ranks of music alike! I’m 26 I’m from Wv and I’ve been playing for 8 years I’m a big fan of the band, and was inspired to play by them. I enjoy succeeding in keeping others creative-minded, intuitive and introducing music to them and creating my own riffs and fun kadoodles on guitar, I also know the piano some! I can’t wait to start the curriculum and do my best on the tests and hopefully improve & expand my abilities. Creativity, positivity, and compassion is going to be my key components that I bring to the table and I can’t wait to see what the rest of you have to share!
Thanks all,
Good luck!

D.S.

A big part of Syn's lead tone is...

I've seen a lot threads on here asking about how people can get a guitar tone like Syn or Avenged Sevenfold. While this tip won't get you all the way there, I figured I'd share this information with everyone since I have it.

Fred Archambault, who engineered on Waking The Fallen, City of Evil, Self Titled, and Nightmare, revealed to me a few years ago that a good chunk of Syn's lead tone is the Boss CS-3 Compressor Pedal. Fred and I also briefly discussed it a few months back when I bought the Bogner from him.

Before you run out and buy this pedal, please understand what a compressor is and what it does. If you go and buy one and plug it in and turn it on, you might be a little disappointed because you don't notice it doing much, unless you're on extreme settings. To put it simply, a compressor is used to control dynamics. The guitar is a relatively dynamic instrument, especially when playing leads. In order to control those dynamics and sort of even out the volume and depth of each note, people will use a compressor. Compression is generally a subtle effect, and most people have to train their ears to even hear and recognize compression, unless it's used drastically.

Here's a description of this specific pedal from Boss:

"The CS-3 Compression Sustainer pedal compresses louder signals while boosting lower signals, providing smooth sustain without degrading the original sound quality. Onboard Level, Tone, Attack and Sustain controls for precise tonal shaping, and the low-noise design allows super-quiet operation. This is the perfect pedal for guitarists and bassists who want to sound their best."

This thread isn't meant to dive too far into the science of a compressor, so please do further research if you'd like. I don't know Syn's settings on this pedal, but to me, his leads sound like they have a fair amount of Attack and Sustain, and not overdoing it on the actual compression. I'm sure he uses the Level as a slight boost in order to make the leads pop out a little. I also don't think he uses this exact pedal live anymore, as the Axe FX has built in compressors he can use. He did use this pedal at one point, and is a great price friendly option.

Sorry for sharing your secrets, @Syn Gates!
