Advanced CHORDS THEORY - Lesson 30 - Advanced chords with modified triads

So you're telling me that these chords can actually get even weirder?

  1. Topics of discussion
  2. Modifying the triad
  3. Advanced added tone chords
  4. Chord variations you may encounter
1. Topics of discussion

In this tutorial, we will be combining chord forming techniques and learn how we can build chords by using different triads. So, let's have some fun.

2. Modifying the triad

During this course, all the chords we've talked about involved using the four basic triads: major, minor, diminished and augmented.

But...what would happen if we decided to be a tad sadistic and modify that triad? What would happen if instead of a major triad, we used a sus2 triad? As you know, a sus2 triad consists of the 1 2 5 notes. A Csus2 triad consists of the C D G notes.

So, what would happen if we add a B♭ on top of a Csus2 triad? We would get a C7sus2 chord. Here is one way to play it:

C7sus2.png

Go ahead and try to play it and then try to play a C7 chord to notice the difference.

And as you might expect, you can play a C7sus4 chord if you use a Csus4 triad (C-F-G). Something like this:

C7sus4.png

Of course, this can become as complex as you want. For example, you can also have a C9sus2 chord, if you play your notes right:

C9sus2.png

Or, why not try a C9sus4 chord as well?

C9sus4.png

You can play around with these as much as you want and obtain a number of different variations for them.

3. Advanced added tone chords

Much like how we can change the base triad and play a different variation of a chord, we can also add a 9th, 11th or 13th note on top of a complex chord in order to play a, let's say, Cmaj7add11. Let's take a look at it:

Cmaj7add11.png

Another example of such a chord is C6add9:

C6add9.png

Finally, let's try to play a C7add13 chord:

C7add13.png

4. Chord variations you may encounter

There will be times when learning and playing some songs that you will encounter variations of the chords we have talked about until now. There will be times when you will see added tone chords that make use of a flatted note, e.g. Cadd♭9. What you need to remember is that whenever you see an accidental next to a note in a chord, you first need to figure out the note from the major scale formed on the root note of the chord and then apply that accidental to the note.

In other words, in order to play a Cadd♭9 chord, you would need to play the C E G and D♭ notes, since the 9th note of the C major scale would be D. Thus, a ♭9 would translate to a D♭.

And that about covers it for this tutorial. In the next one, we will be going through all the advanced chord types we've talked about and figure out where we can use them. See you then.

Cover collab/skill collab

Hi everyone! Hope you are doing great! I was thinking about starting a project, a collab to be precise, and I would like to do it on something A7X, or in a Jared's shred collab. For both of them, I would need some guitarists, bassists, drummers and even some vocalist.
The result would go to my newly created YouTube channel and all participants will have rights to distribute the video freely, unless they really participated.
Thanks for any ideas and hope we can blow everything up!

Picks again........Those little plastic, nylon, metal tools.

Whaddup Synners!

So I have been playing around with different picks ever since the Rona stopped the world.

And I settled on the Dunlop flow picks since then. But I always struggled with finding my pick of destiny!
And for a while I thought I found it, a 4.20 mm Behemoth of a pick.

Whilst that pick was great for leads, it really was not good for strumming, and the price of those picks for a struggling musician was also a con.

Thus, I convinced myself to go with a more traditional 2 mm pick from the same line of Dunlop flows. And I tried it for a year. Did not work.

So now, having recently played some funk for fun, I noticed that thinner picks, 0.73 to 1mm usually really help me strum and let loose for the funk.

Finding that situation I decided, that I have not a one pick first all for me currently at this step of my journey. Thus, I chose to get em all, thankfully there are only 11 non-signature flow picks, feeling kinda like a pokemon master over here.

But why all, you might ask?

Because I want to use the pick without having to worry about a replacement. Thus as a future investment, I got 6 of each, and as I love heavier picks I got 12 of them XD

That’s all.

  • Question
This old guitar.

Okay, so my mom’s friend gave her a guitar and it had been in the garage for about ten years and recently I talked to her about it and she had taken it to guitar center to get it restrung and they said they couldn’t do it because something (we don’t remember what it was) was in upside down or backwards and so I said we could figure out what’s wrong and just buy the parts and learn it. So please help me out with this I really want to learn and figure it out. I will send pictures and I will answer any of y’all’s questions and all.

Guitar Songs for drop D tuning

Wussup everyone!
41.gif

So I have a floyd rose bridge guitar, meaning I married to the drop D tuning.

And it's hard sometimes because a lot of metal music is in standard tuning; I was able to transcribe some songs like the trooper so I could play along with a D tuning version from Youtube

But this method don't work for me for a lot of songs, so I am wondering if there are any people who can relate to this and maybe recommend some songs to learn using this method?

  • Question
Can someone help with the libad TOANS?

I love the new record and the solos are great. I will not go more into how this record is my favourite ever to keep this short. How do get the guitar tones? I really want to know how to replicate the tones in the mattel verses, the solo in cosmic and the solo and other tones in G. Thanks alot to anyone who helps me. These tones are the most different I've heard and I love them! Also how does syn gets some reverb while he holds down the harmonic notes in the solo which sounds like you're going through a tunnel?

I (We) Love You All

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks to Papa Gates and Syn and everyone involved with the new album for giving my dad an amazing birthday gift. He’s been counting down the days to finally be able to hear LIBAD and he’s been listening to it nonstop since it came out!

I just ordered some stuff from the store and can’t wait to bring it to him. If you guys in the community could send him a happy birthday message I’m sure it would make his world even more

Thanks so much for the new album!

Uploading music

I live in India I used to upload my messing around on guitar with a melody at the center of it on Sportify and got like 5000 streams in a month using an online free distributer which does not exist in India anymore
The streams show that people had intrest is this kind of stuff
I want to Upload stuff on Sportify again but there is Distributers are way to expencive
Is there a way to upload stuff on sportify for free
The traks were mid at peak so you can also do it and make some money if lucky and if not most of you surely practice improvising so it is nothing extra just record audio in phone and master it with any AI website using a song you love as refrence to the AI and it makes very intresting music if your refrence is an absurd example for context so I trien giving pop sounding example to early Nirvana and the song changes it is really cool

  • Question
Advanced Sweep Picking

When it comes to sweep picking I am comfortable doing 3 string sweeps at high bpms, but as soon as I start trying to include more strings it seems near impossible. I came to the conclusion that its either lack of practice since I have only been learning sweeps for about 2 weeks now or that once my wrist bends to a certain point it makes it too hard to be able to sweep back down. If anyone has the secret to make it click please let me know, otherwise please share tips to help improve sweeping.

LIBAD

I can’t help but squeal about it 😶

  • Question
Beginner set up?

Hey. I'm new here and I'm sure I am repeating a question asked before but I couldn't find the answer so I'm hoping not to be too annoying.

I'm keen to learn guitar. I have no experience at all. Except from listening to more music than I like to admit. I currently own an acoustic guitar, and I am assuming it's very basic as it cost £250 about 15 years ago. I have had a little play today and I'm not feeling the love.

I think I am just going to buy an electric guitar and set up but I am so overwhelmed. I don't think it matters but just for info I am in the UK.

Would the Syn custom standard Schecter be suitable for someone learning? What else would I need?

I do believe that I may be having a midlife crisis ha ha ha. However I am determined and would appreciate any help. Thank you so much.
