Guitar Practice outside of Syn’s School

Hello everyone,

I’ve had my custom-s since about mid December, and I’ve been going through Syn’s school with Papa Gates, but I feel that I’m not improving as fast as I could be - or should be considering I’ve had an acoustic for a little under a year.
For my acoustic practice I was really inconsistent, but when I did practice I used JustinGuitar.
When you all started out did you do anything outside of the school here? What could I do to improve a bit faster? I know I should include a metronome, but not sure what else.
Any recommendations or guidance would be appreciated.

The Cost of the Road

This tour manager took Shadows' statement about tour bus costs being up $2 million over their last tour, and broke it down and investigated a little during a livestream. It's fascinating, and gives a little more insight into what it takes for a band like Avenged to hit the road for six months.

Playthrough/Lessons

So I can't stop thinking about how amazing it would be if when the album comes out, Syn gives us playthroughs and lessons of every track on the album. Kind of like how Fret12 does with their "Sound and Story" idea. I know it's a long shot and it will most likely never happen and i'm ok with that! I'm honestly just looking forward to the album and seeing them live.. However, my mind does continue to wander and I can't help but think of how much it would help the website and school to possibly bring new people in if Syn chose to give us breakdowns of the tracks!

Also, I do not at all pretend to understand how busy every single person in the band is. this is purely a hypothetical want and i don't know how much traction it holds with everyone else in the school. Hope you are all doing fantastic and I cannot wait until June 2nd! hope to see some of you at some shows!

Guitar Alternative methods for "Unlocking the Fretboard"

Ive seen a few posts here and there that have asked questions like " How do i unlock the fretboard?" or "How do I memorize every note on the Fretboard?"

Ive been playing guitar for almost 15 years, and its never been my goal to memorize every note on the fretboard, but I do have a couple easy tricks to be able to figure out where you are on the fretboard at anytime without memorizing the fretboard.

Trick One: A BC D EF G. Whole steps and half steps

Each fret is a half step away from each other. With the exception of BC and EF, each whole note is a full step (2 frets) away from one another. B and C are half steps (one fret) away as well as E and F.

Okay... So now look at your guitar. Assuming you know how its tuned, in this example I will use E standard, I can now explain how to figure out where you are.

Lets take the Low E string first. Open note is E, and from open to 1st fret is a half step. So fret 1 is F. Now, simply calculate the rest.

Open(E), 1(F), 3(G), 5(A), 7(B), 8(C), 10(D), 12(Octave point, E)

The notes above are whole notes, meaning they contain no sharps or flats. If you want to fill the sharps and flats in, depending on if your ascending from open(sharp), or descending from 12(flat), you would plug in a sharp after every whole note between 1 and 3, 5 and 7, 8 and 10, and 10 and 12.

This is the confusing part with the half steps.

Bsharp is also C. Esharp is also F. Vice versa for flats. C flat is B, and F flat is E.

Think of this not as a key, but as a roadmap. If youre ever wondering where you are on the fretboard, remember the formula, and do some quick arithmetic to answer your question.

Over time, in doing so, the process will become easier and easier each time you do it.

The next steps to unlocking the fretboard would be training your ears to spot intervals and learning some basic scales.

Fretboard seperation

Guys, i hv an electric guitar, and there's a gap between the fretboard and neck as I've shown below. It's really hindering with the notes, and fking up the feel of the notes, some places action suddenly feels high, low, etc. What to do?
Also, why are some strings louder than others? Like i had all 5 except high E from 1 brand, and the E was significantly "quiter" less resonance i guess?

I need help getting back to playing guitar after some time.

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone knows or is very familiar with a routine to get back to playing the electric guitar :(.

Previously, I mastered techniques like sweep picking, alternate picking, tapping, etc., but due to university commitments, I stopped playing the guitar for a mere 5 months, and now I know NOTHING.

I feel completely useless; it feels like I've abandoned something I dedicated so much time to.

I want to get back to playing like before. Does anyone have any routines or exercises? (Sorry for the long text.)

Tales of a Musician - I trust people less and less with each passing DM

I'm back with another tale...

My enthusiasm for writing music is still there, even after all these years. Especially this year when I am creating a Doom-inspired album in honor of Doom turning 30 years old. And yes, I am talking inspired by both the original OST and Mick Gordon .

I've even grown some enthusiasm for social media. More in the sense that I know it is something that is needed in order to grow as an artist.

But my patience and trust are growing smaller with each DM I receive. I've had an Instagram account for about 3 years (feel free to follow me @andrewmilnermusic). And in those 3 years, I have never received a genuine DM from anyone outside my follower list. Not once. The only things I receive are questionable offers for even more questionable services and people masquerading as journalists looking for a quick buck off of unsuspecting people.

That is all, I'm gonna go rage now.
