Make a 6 string sound like 8

I know. Weird title. So my boyfriend showed me the song Doom BFG Division by Mick Gordon. I really wanna learn the guitar part for him but I don't have an 8 string guitar.....yet. So is there a way to make 6 strings sound like 8 or transpose the tab somehow? The strings from lowest to highest are EBEADGBE. Maybe just tune the A up to a B? I know it won't sound the exact same but I would like to try. Thanks fam.

Issuing a challenge

Long time no see, $ynners! I have made a goal for myself and I also want to create a goal and challenge for each of YOU, as well. I've just posted THIS video with details, but I thought it'd be fun to create a thread and really get some fun going again.

What I want YOU to do is as follows: No matter what skill level you are, learn and practice a song for a week. Then upload a video at the end of the week of your progress or playthrough the whole song. I don't want perfect. I want RAW and UNEDITED. Leave your mistakes in as I have in the part I have trouble with in the included video. The one RULE I have... YOU HAVE TO HAVE FUN. I don't care about the mistakes, but I better see you having a blast and jamming like you're having a mini-concert in your shower! (You know we all do it...Don't even try it.) Then please post your video here, so we can all see and interact with you! And don't worry, we will only leave kind comments and improvements and give you lots of love.

So here is what I'm doing. I put off this song for the longest time... (I hurt my hand...been depressed, and have been working full time...blah blah blah) but I know I can do it now. A Ray of Light is my goal song for the week. I will play through it completely and upload my video next Sunday. See ya shortly! ❤️

Guitar Synyster Gates custom S whammy bar won't stay in

Hi, my whammy bar on my custom S won't stay in. So I screwed it in the day I got it, then I got it out again using the little hex key it came with. But now that in trying to put it back in, it won't stay in. When I looked inside the small hole the key is supposed to go in to, it doesn't have the same connection point anymore that was there before so now when I put the hex key in there, it doesn't do anything. Did something break or fall out or something? Thanks

NEW LIVE CHAT FOR SYNNERS!

Whaddup Synners?

Jak and CJ here!

We have been lurking on the school for a while now and we feel like the school could get some fire back.
Polish_20230422_215432822.jpg

One of the biggest aspects of this school is the sense of community that got us all hooked from the start. One of the things that would spontaneously happen in the good old days were meetings with school members in which we would just talk. Of course, it all somehow led back to music and our beloved 6 or 7 or however many, stringed friends. But we cherished that space in which we could put faces to those usernames and exchange interesting ideas.

In that spirit, we have been thinking about rebooting those spontaneous meetups, but in a more structured and consistent way. Therefore, we hereby, want to wholeheartedly introduce you to……..*Drum roll please*……..

WORLDS COLLIDE!

Worlds Collide, a safe space where people can exchange their world views on any topic that might come up. This idea was born from talks we had in which we would discuss random topics as they came up and we would like to keep doing that but actually doing it for the school.

BUT THERE'S A BIG ASPECT OF THIS! We want to hear YOU talk! We may be the hosts of this panel, but we want to hear your voice as well! Speak your mind in a safe place free of judgements, and let's get to know the new faces of Synner and rekindle past friendships!

Therefore, we kindly invite you to our first meeting and encourage you to join and participate if you like!

Avenged Sevenfold recently released "Nobody" and pretty much divided fans straight down the middle. So our first meeting will be talking about Nobody; what we liked and disliked, the fan reaction and more. But we want to hear YOUR thoughts, too!
AND...
Let’s have a Forum in which we all can discuss different topics. Be it music, gear, pop culture, social issues or whatever else comes to mind.

First meeting is: Saturday, April 29th at
12pm-1pm CST
7pm GMT+1

Building a guitar

Hi everyone! Hope you feel great! I want to try to build my own God damn heavy guitar using hand tools (I don't have access to anything other than a streigth line cutter). It will be wild AF but I want to take the time and patience to build a really nice, playable 7 string guitar. Let me use bullet points for what I want because it will be easier to navigate in it. Btw is Avenger style copyrighted by Schecter? I hope not.

# of strings: 7
# of frets: 24
Scale: 673mm (26.5')

Design: neck through
Style: Schecter Avenger

Neck: oak wood
Body: oak wood
Top: ash wood
Fretboard: rosewood

Truss rod: 590mm two way Göldo VS44B
Harley Benton locking nuts (4R, 3L)
Floyd Rose 7 string Special (I don't have enough money for now, later will be upgraded to Pro ver.)
Frets: Göldo WS210 Jumbo Fret Wire

Neck pickup: Sustainiac Stealth Pro (still don't know if I want to go into it)
Bridge pickup: Fishman Fluence Modern high output
Pots: 1 volume (provided by Fishman Fluence Modern set)
1 tone PP (also from the set)
Switches: 3 way switch
Sustainiac AUX 2 switches
High Frequency Tilt toggle switch (not provided - need to buy separate)
Jack: 9 pin (provided by Sustainiac)
Battery box: Gotoh 9V BB-04W

I am still thinking how I can do my personal position marks. I want to do the heartbeat graph as marks with one big heart taking 12th fret (it will not be bigger) and two small at 24th fret, both at different end of fretboard. Of course there would be a line going through the whole fretboard. If it would be possible, everything will be white except hearts and all of it should glow in the dark.
For a side dots, I am not sure if I want to try to put them in but they should be white and also glow in the dark.

For last, I want to do a ceruse finish on the ash top, not sure if red cracks and black wood, or blue cracks and black wood, or yellow cracks and black wood. Other parts should have the classic smooth gloss finish without any colour added to it, but now I am thinking that I will paint just the body in black.

For a use, I would have the guitar tuned in A standard (one step down) with Korn 10-65. If I would not like them, I will go into D'addario NYXL 10-64.

Thanks for any suggestions and have a nice day.

Possessed Sinner/Sam for short.

I need to change my strings! (and you too, Ari 🦆🔪)

Hello everyone! Sooo since I bought my guitars I never changed my strings and I've been thinking lately that I should have done this earlier, but whatever 😹 Well, looks like life wanted to give me a little push too, cause a string on my acoustic broke out of nowhere and I'm not even using it, so this must be a sign 🤣
Anyway, I plan on buying new strings for both my acoustic and my electric on the upcoming Black Friday cause I'm poor and I could really use some discounts so that's my chance 😹 I think this forum might already have guides on how to change strings and etc but some other questions crossed my mind and I wonder if you can help me with those! I'm gonna number the questions so it's easier to refer to them 😆 Here we go:

1 - If I'm gonna change them by myself, what exactly do I need to do it? Like do I need any tools? Are they expensive? Or I just need the strings, lots of patience and some praying? 🙏🏼

2 - I currently have an acoustic with nylon strings, I've read before that you can't put steel strings on nylon guitars and vice versa. Is this correct or it's a myth?

3 - About string gauges, can I choose any set based on personal preferences or I have to buy a specific one that is "compatible" with my guitar? I'm thinking about buying an Ernie Ball Regular Slinky set (green pack, 10-46) 🤔

4 - While searching for the acoustic, I've seen sets with low, medium and high tension. Again: can I choose this or I have to buy something according to what my guitar "accepts"? If I can choose it, how does it influence my playing/sound?

5 - Will I get to change my strings before Ari? 🤔 I still have a week until I order them and it will probably take two more weeks for them to arrive 🤔 What do you think? 🤔

I think that's it for now but if I remember anything more I will add to this thread later 😆 Thanks in advance!

My strings sound like crap

I put on a new set of DR Black Beauties about a week and a half ago. It was sounding great until yesterday where my high e string just buzzes all the time no matter what fret its on. I have tried many different tunings to try and fix it. Most of the time I have it in drop c. Is it possible I have already killed that string? I'm more than likely going to go back to the EB HBST strings.

Guitar Syn Custom S Tremolo

Hello all, I'm new here and recently bought my first Custom S guitar secondhand from a guitar center. When I picked up the guitar, I noticed the allen screw meant to keep the tremolo arm in place was missing and nowhere to found so now it's always moving or popping out if I lean over which is really annoying. Anyone know the size of this screw or where I could potentially get one? Obviously with the FR 1500 being exclusive and all I can't find anything else on this anywhere...

  • Question
Guitar CAGED barre tips

I just can't seem to make my barring finger cover everything without lifting the rest of my hand, or muting. Particularly the A chord. G is a problem, though not as bad. C, E, and D just need time. How can I fix my barring? A side note- I have 20 frets on a 25.5 inch scale, so my frets are slightly larger. Could this be making a difference? I'm upgrading soon and it should be 22 or 24 frets on a 25.5 scale, but I don't want to rely on that

  • Question
Custom-S sustainiac issue

I bought a second hand custom-s which was barely used and in good condition. Everything works apart from the sustainiac. I have replaced the battery with a new duracell one but it was only working in the lower strings. I raised the height and it worked on the b string also now but it still keeps cutting out on the high e string. The only setting that kinda works is the feedback setting in the middle, the sustain and harmonic keep cutting out. Could anyone help?

The REAL Key to A7X Tone

Short answer:
The cheap SM57 microphone is the major key to unlocking some of Avenged Sevenfold’s iconic tone.

Hey folks,
I just want to share a quick bit about the awesome album tone A7X manages to achieve. For context, I’ve been researching the band and chasing a sound similar to them since the early internet, before sites like YouTube even existed.

The band’s City of Evil and self-titled guitar tone is incredible. The simple term I would use to describe them is “cut.” Those tones are just so precise and articulate, they cut through the mix perfectly. You could also describe them as sharp, or even a bit harsh if you stretch the idea a bit. How on earth did they achieve that sound using Uberschall amps of all things - an amp known for being extremely dark in tone (they aren’t actually dark amps, but that’s a whole other topic). Among a few other tone shaping tools on their albums ( NOTE their album sound is a lot different than their live tone) the $120 SM57 microphone is the real key.

If you’ve ever used an SM57 on a guitar amp, you know the sound already. It’s a very coloured microphone. It filters a lot of lows out out of the sound and does pretty significant boost in the upper mids. I would call it a vary nasally microphone myself. It’s sharp and cutting, just like the quality I love in A7X tone.

To balance out the harsh tone of the SM57, most studio folks will point the mic on the guitar cab at the space where the speak cone and dust cap meet - the popular mid-tonal point on the speaker between really dark (far edge of the cone) and really bright (dust cap in the centre).

…Not A7X though. Nope. In some of my recent research, I came across an interview with engineer Fred Archambault on working with the band, and he says they placed the SM57 in the dead centre of the speaker, taking the sharp sound of the mic to its extreme.

This is FASCINATING to me. They broke a major recording tradition to achieve their awesome guitar tone, and it really paid off.

I also found out that the iconic snare drum from City of Evil was recorded with an SM57 too. The Rev did use an extremely bright snare to record that album, but the SM57 takes it to the next level.

I hope this knowledge is helpful for people! You don’t have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to achieve a sound, so work with what you have, even a cheap $100 mic! Album vs live tone is very different. Also, A7X use so many different guitar and amp routs to achieve their sounds, it’s hard to nail down just one sound for them, but most all of it is filtered through an SM57.

Which song/s are you the most excited for??

Alright, so, going strictly off of the song titles on “Life is but a Dream”, which song or songs are you the most excited to hear and why? There have been little tiny bits of info dropped in a few interviews on some sounds this record may feature, so feel free to discuss that as well!

Compressor Settings

I’ve read that a compressor is a key element of Syn’s lead tone. I’ve never used a compressor before - does anyone have any tips for how to set it up (threshold, ratio, attack, release) for his style of leads? I have a Fractal Axe FX III which has a ton of different compressor options. Would appreciate any tips!
