Our favorite bands need us right now

You've had more than your share of struggles lately, my friend, and adding this on top must be stressful and aggravating. I can't imagine. If I was the praying type, I'd pray for you, but since I believe that's about as effective as cutting glass with a bag of wet hair, I'll just say you're in...

Our favorite bands need us right now

I don't think Maiden need the cash infusion, my friend. Haha. Light the Torch is not super-screamy. It's heavy and metalcore, but Howard is much more of a clean power singer than screamer. Animals as Leaders is instrumental - and CRAZY. You might like them. That's Tosin Abasi and it's hard to...

Our favorite bands need us right now

If your favorite band is not a bunch of platinum selling multi-millionaires (ahem, not pointing fingers in here, cough cough), then canceling a tour is depriving them of almost ALL of the money they would make this year. If you have the means, buy some merch from them RIGHT NOW. A t-shirt, an...

Collab List (Speak now or forever hold your peace)

I'll play anything, or multiple things, as long as it's not sweeps or tapping.

    String gauge

Somewhat. I am much more into modern metal than 80s metal now. The guitars I keep in Eb are usually hardtails and they wind up in Drop C# as often as Eb standard. But yeah, all the Eb standard stuff is like Extreme, Lynch Mob, GnR, stuff like that, so yeah!

    String gauge

I used 9-46 for decades. When I started experimenting with picks, I also started experimenting with strings. Where I landed was that for most of my guitars, 10-46 is just right. If it's in Eb tuning, especially if I drop tune that Eb string, I use 10-48s. Anything lower than Drop C#, I go with...

Any tips for learning how to sweep pick?

Rolling comes easier to me than that finger independence bit.

Any tips for learning how to sweep pick?

Interesting idea. I will have to see if I can do better with E and A shapes.

    Taking a break

Take what you need. Most of us know the hurt you're feeling. We're not going anywhere, and neither is your guitar which, by the way, can be a profound source of comfort, too. I know it is for me. Hang in there. We'll be here when you need us. Any or all of us.

I am struggling to find the desired tone from my guitar and amp. help.

Yeah, those markings on the Les Paul are from a pre-saturation era when jazz men played them with clean tones all the time.

    Amp advice

AxeFXII XL+ can be had used a lot cheaper. The III can be gotten now with a premium foot controller for $2600US. https://shop.fractalaudio.com/package-deal-axe-fx-iii-with-fc-12-foot-controller/ Still expensive, I know, but every little bit helps.

I am struggling to find the desired tone from my guitar and amp. help.

Listen to some Kings-X to hear about the heaviest tone you're going to get out of single coils.

Any tips for learning how to sweep pick?

For whatever reason, my problem on sweeps is NOT my picking hand. It's fretting hand. My fingers just DO NOT want to go those ways that fast. The sweeping motion on the picking hand? No problemo. The fretting? Pure Spaz.

I am struggling to find the desired tone from my guitar and amp. help.

Your biggest problem is going to be the single coil pickup in that bridge. Fat, wide crushing tones come from humbuckers. And, despite what a lot of people think, well-balanced mid-range tuning on the amp. Dime was a huge fan of scooping all the mids, but his tone on its own was pretty thin.
