Advice on Tube Amp? (I'm looking to upgrade my old amp)

I've been playing for ~35 years. There is no single piece of gear I've ever bought that has been as important and useful as my AxeFX. But that's just me. My other passion is computers and tech, so it kind of goes hand in hand. It IS an amazingly versatile piece of kit, though.

    Melody & Motif - Lesson 2

That is ALL blues, for sure. I actually heard one of the great funk bass players (Bootsy maybe?) say something similar about playing funk bass lines - "play the first half of the measure straight, to set the feel, then improv the rest, before starting over with the beat for the first half again."

Advice on Tube Amp? (I'm looking to upgrade my old amp)

PS: The lunchbox amps can get CRAZY loud, too.

Advice on Tube Amp? (I'm looking to upgrade my old amp)

I have detailed files. There are videos on my Cooking with Captain Ed channel that go into a bit of what working with an AxeFX is like. There are also a slew of newer tube amps with the kind of variability you're looking for. Those based on the 5150 architecture are outstanding, including the...

    Using headphones with tube amp

@Lindsey - yes, it does, hence my answer. Yours is essentially the same, but may expand it out to some cheaper options. I like it.

    Using headphones with tube amp

Any solution I could think of would involve TRYING things that may or may not work. The only thing I can really think of is to get a small USB powered computer interface, like a Focusrite Scarlett Solo or something, power it with a USB cable plugged into the wall, and run a mic out from the...

No Matter What I Do, Playing Standing Up Hurts My Wrist

To address the other part of your concern, there are stretches you can do for your fretting hand to help build your "spread." Basically, using your thumb and pointer finger from your right hand to spread apart (stretch!) the spacing of each set of fingers on your left hand.

Dream Guitar? What is your next guitar?

I did. I lusted for it briefly, but since they're number-limited, they're already hitting e-bay and reverb for $6k US.

Dream Guitar? What is your next guitar?

That's because even while it is technically a single coil, it was not designed to be a single coil. The tone of each coil was designed and tuned to be a part of a humbucker first, whereas with a strat, everything about it is designed for that single coil tone. It's a fantastic compromise, and I...

    New Guitar

Fretboard oil every or every other string change. I usually put one tiny drop on each exposed piece of fretboard (between frets) then rub it in with a soft cloth wrapped around my pointer/index finger, starting with the highest fret. That way, but they time you get to the biggest spaces at the...

Dream Guitar? What is your next guitar?

I think I may finally be feeling something Strat or Strat-like, in the classic sense - three single coils. Not sure if I'd go American Ultra Stratocaster, PRS Silver Sky, or a Kiesel Delos, but that's what I'm looking at next - something for classic Blues.

    New Guitar

There's nothing special to maintain about the Synyster Custom, as opposed to any other Floyd Rose-equipped guitar. If it has a sustainiac, then making sure the battery is fresh, but that would also apply to any guitar with active pickups, as well. Music Nomad makes great products, as David says.

    Guitar Setup

Stick to the 12th fret overall - it's about the middle of the "bow" between bridge and nut, and that's always going to be at the 12th fret - that's just math.

    RRHOF is a joke

Nothing says "Rock and Roll" like Biggie.

Did you hear it? FUCKING AMAZING!!!!

Anew comment has appeared: “Set Me Free” was previously recorded for the “Hail To The King” album but has never been released until now. It will be included on the streaming version of “Diamonds in the Rough” coming Feb 7.

    Pickup squeal

I would still STRONGLY advise you (and ANYONE) to get used to swiping the volume pot off and/or palm muting all the strings. Not every amp has a built in noise gate. This is a mandatory brain-train automatic response for any guitarist who uses gain and plays loud.
  18. Ed Seith

    Pickup squeal

Totally normal. It's microphonic feedback, caused by the sound coming from the amp making the strings vibrate. Try it again, but either use your palm to mute all the strings, or turn your volume down, or move farther away from the amp. The first two, you should get used to doing religiously...

On the QUEST! Pick and choose

This is an interesting and timely post, as I'm doing a lot of the same thing. My picking mechanics have always been less than structured and reliable, and I am slowing down a lot (again) to try and rectify (again), and Troy's definitely got a part to play in that. As far as picks are concerned...

    Guitar recommendation help

Well, for $350, you'll have a lot of options in the "beat up and covered with stickers but plays FUCKING AWESOME" category, so you should look for a good used guitar. Ibanez, Schecter, ESP, Epiphone, etc, all have great guitars that would be in the $500-750 range new, but would be at or near...
