I'm Not Happy With Some Things Here

I don't want the mods to come at me or anything. I'm just vocalizing my frustration and I know some of the mods may even have the same feeling as I do.

I am not happy on this site. It's not even about the lessons being down because that can't be helped.

But the social aspect has completely flat-lined. Posting stuff on here usually just gets the support and interaction from the Mod team, which I'm very grateful for to have that.

But I tried to get involved in the discord side of things and I swear to God all they talk about is gear and post a7x covers.

One student on discord got fired up about finding out I use to do contests and everyone ignored that conversation. I tried to get people pumped up about something other than gear talk and the messages are completely ignored.

So many senior students have left the site. All of my closest friends are gone and aren't active anymore. And that's okay, as I understand even i left for a while but I just miss it.

I'm not trying to come from a place of malice or hate. I love the fact that those who are here are still keeping the place up and going. I just hate that discord channel.

The social aspect here was so fun. I just miss it.
I don't mean to press anyone's buttons I just had to vocalize my frustrations as a student.

I would love to see this school making money for Syn and to keep the school funded but I don't see the purpose of anyone buying memberships when streams are limited and the social aspect has been directed to discord.

Another school I signed up for has its own discord with a bunch of sub categories that makes it super helpful to not have to read about other people's guitars all day. Maybe Synner could do that?

Is there anything I can do to help?

⚠️ Update on the lessons! ⚠️

Hey everyone!

So as you all know, the lessons have been down for a couple weeks now and I just wanted to give an update and an explanation as to why it takes so much time in order to keep y'all in the loop! I'm going to try and be as transparent as I can be.

Long story short, we used to host the video for the lessons on Vimeo but for reasons unknown to us, we just couldn't access the Vimeo account anymore and the videos stopped working. We've been working to get an explanation from Vimeo and recover the lessons videos and SynTV streams from our account but their customer support isn't very responsive.

So we're currently working on two options, trying to regain access to Vimeo or moving our videos to YouTube. We're still trying to work with Vimeo to see if that option will work, but are considering YouTube as a more stable option. A problem arose when looking at YouTube though: we need all of the lesson video files. The problem with this is that many of the videos were stored directly on Vimeo which we no longer have access to and Syn and PG are in the process of looking through hard drives in between traveling to find the files.

These are basically the reasons why it's taking so long. We are doing everything that is possible to have the lessons back asap, we know that you are all eager to have them back and there is no one that wants them back up as much as we do.

I don't have quite an ETA to give but I will let you all know as soon as I have more updates.

Thank you all for your patience!

- Rad

I bought a new battle axe, new here ... ish.

I fully intend to take advantage of the greatest guitar curriculum at my fingertips disposal. Music has always been a passion and/or hobby of mine .. I want to start taking seriously and try to reach a legendary level of shred. I am totally in love with my new guitar. I swear, I felt like Harry Potter when he picked up his wand for the first time at Olivanders. The guitar chooses the player lol. All that being said, I'm stoked.

  • Question
Temporary alternatives while videos are down?

Hi All,

Hope all's well! I was wondering if the community is using any alternative resources while the videos for the School are being sorted out.

To follow the roadmap of the lessons would you recommend I just search each respective class on Google or YouTube (eg. Major Scale)?

Just looking to follow some structure until the videos come back up.

Cheers,

Hlawa

Sing everything.

Feeling like you want to write something? Sing it.
Transcribe a part? Sing it.
Learn a scale/arpeggio/interval? Sing it.
Play over changes? Sing over changes.
Improve your connection between your inner ear and fingers? Sing everything you play, and play everything you see.

I’m yet to find a musical situation where this hasn’t applied at some point.

A Peek Behind the Curtain - How Tours are Run

Ever wonder what the people Syn and the guys hire to run their tours actually do? This is a great video that goes into the general logistics of it all. I can't figure out who their example artist is, but considering the size of the venues they're using, it's reasonable to assume it's an A7X-sized band, though not necessarily rock or metal. Check it out!

Lead Guitar

I’ve been trying to practice my lead guitar skills so I go on a backing track to do that and… I have no idea what to do. I’m even questioning what lead guitar is. I look up on the internet for help and I couldn’t find my answer but maybe I did, I have no idea. Is lead guitar just soloing over the rhythm because that is what all the sources on the internet were saying. What is lead guitar?

Putting Yourself Out There and Actually BEING A Musician

Hey everyone! I'm really excited and I wanted to share with you guys some things I have going on in hopes of inspiring other people. I watched this video on youtube about handling criticism on the internet and it honestly changed my perspective on social media, posting on the internet and utilizing technology.

While my album is still being written, I've told myself I really want to play out. Sitting in my house all day and going to the studio isn't cutting it for me anymore. I actually had a really inspiring conversation with my dad a few nights ago and I'd like to share some of it with you all. I believe there are some lessons in here worth sharing.

For those of you who don't know, my dad and I have had an incredibly rough relationship. It was rocky, to say the very least. After I moved out, I had considered cutting him out completely of my life and not even telling him where I was going. Of course I didn't do that, and I'm glad I didn't because our relationship has gotten better since I left. But he asked me about my book (I've been working on a novel for a while now) and when it was going to get published. I told him that because it costs about $3,500 for an editor, my book is delayed as I'm still saving for it.
He told me, "Well, I'm retiring soon and while I can't pay the full amount, I sure would love to help you out with a good amount. I believe in your book a lot and I really want to see it get finished."

My heart about stopped. I actually began to cry because I was so moved to hear such a thing. If I would have cut him out of my life, that support would not have been there.

Now my dad is a musician too. He's who I learned guitar from. On that conversation, he spent an hour telling me stories about playing live when the drinking age was 18. He told me, "Listen. Get yourself out there. Get with a working band. I love that you're doing your album. But you owe it to yourself to feel what it's like to experience BEING a musician with those that can show you the ropes of the actual lifestyle. It doesn't matter if you go to a show and the only instrument is an accordion. You get your ass up there and you have fun with it. Being a musician is about being creative and creating with the tools you have."

That last statement hit me hard. Because my whole life as a musician, I wasn't enough for people. I either didn't have the right myspace account set up, didn't have a properly recorded demo, didn't have a car, the right gear to play "live", enough guitars, the best image.... I could go on. All of this has since weighed on my heart and has prevented me from truly stepping into the limelight.

After I hung up with him, my life was different. I began searching around online for working bands. I emailed people. I reached out. Now I have a meeting in late December with a well-known local tribute band that travels for work (and the money is pretty decent), I've had four people reach out to me for lessons locally, I'm gonna have a Valentine's day set list as a singer/acoustic player at my local favorite cafe (something I've wanted to do for years), and I have something INCREDIBLY HUGE that I'm working with someone on for next year. I can't say what it is yet, but Syn knows about it and I'm really crossing my fingers that it happens. If this happened, it truly would be a milestone of a dream in my life.

My point is, is that my dad wanted to invest in my book. Syn gifted me guitars. Papa sat with me for hours and gave me sagely advice. The students here once rallied and gifted me an AMAZING interface for Christmas to start my home studio. All it takes is for a few people to believe in you.

So if you don't have anyone that believes in you, I do.

And if you've wanted to get out there with your music but are afraid to, please don't. Post up a million times on Instagram/TikTok. Make your youtube channel. Go to open mic jams and audition for bands you find online, even if they're not in your state. Make it happen. If it's something you want, say "yes" and find a way to make it happen!

If you're interested in the video I watched, here it is. Maybe it'll help you too :)

FICTION Guitar Session

Hey Synners! I recently decided to try and match the piano part on fiction when it had no business having a guitar part 😂 I love the song so much and hope there’s someone out there that enjoys this!
It’s not a perfect take by any means… but I’m proud of it!

Advanced CHORDS THEORY - Lesson 28 - 11th chords

So is this like in high school and these chords are in the 11th grade?
  1. Topics of discussion
  2. Major 11th chords
  3. Dominant 11th chords
  4. Minor 11th chords
  5. Minor 11th flat five chords
1. Topics of discussion

In this tutorial, we will be talking about 11th chords and how to play them on the guitar. So, let's have some fun.

2. Major 11th chords

Major 11th chords are obtained by adding the 11th note on top of a major 9 chord. They are notated as maj11. Thus, the formula for these chords is 1 3 5 7 9 11. Quite the chord this one, isn't it?

Let's take a Cmaj11 chord. The notes for such a chord are C E G B D F. As you might expect, the CAGED system is all but useless in trying to play this chord. However, here are 3 movable forms, which you can use to play other maj11 chords. And here they are:

And here it is played back.

And here it is played back.

And here it is played back.

3. Dominant 11th chords

Dominant 11th chords, notated with the number 11, are obtained by adding the 11th note on top of a dominant 9th chord. As a result, the formula for these chords is 1 3 5 ♭7 9 11.

For a C11 chord, the notes, therefore, are C E G B♭ D F. Because of the sheer complexity of this chord, you will mostly be able to play it in two ways:

And here it is played back.

And here it is played back.

4. Minor 11th chords

Minor 11th chords, notated as m11, are obtained by adding the 11th note on top of a minor 9th chord. Thus, the formula for them is 1 ♭3 5 ♭7 9 11.

A Cm11 chord, therefore, has the following notes: C E♭ G B♭ D F. Here are some ways to play it:

And here it is played back.

5. Minor 11th flat five chords

Minor 11th flat five chords, notated as m11(♭5), are obtained by adding the 11th note on top of an m9(♭5) chord. Thus, the formula for them is 1 ♭3 ♭5 ♭7 9 11.

The Cm11(♭5) chord consists of the following notes: C E♭ G♭ B♭ D F. Here is how you can play this chord. To me, this is the only physical way I can manage to play it on a standard guitar:

And here it is played back.

That about covers it for this tutorial. In the next one, we will be discussing 13th chords. See you then.

Contacting Syn

Greetings, fellow Synners!

I attended the halloween party, and had an insane conversation with Syn himself. We dwelled deep into the topic of theory and writing. We discussed a certain instrument m he created, and he was going to send me a picture. Very complicated getting his attention on twitter, and I am not the kind of fan to annoy.

Hopefully he sees this here, or someone can bump him for me.

Rage and Love,
CZ

  • Question

Someone has a solution to it?

  • Question
Rebuilding old skills?

So I've played guitar for a little over a year and a half but for the past month I've been really sick and haven't been able to do anything. As I've been recovering I've just gotten to the point of being able to pick up my guitar again and I noticed I'm having a hardtime playing things I used to be able to play perfectly and I found that if I stick with the same riff for a bit then switch to one I used to be able to play, I can play it like I never took a break from guitar. What are some ways you guys practice after taking a break for a while?
