Keeping it fresh in the bedroom.............with guitars.

In response to Queen Jak's thread, I wish to share with you guys one interview session where @Syn Gates , ZV & JC talked about their experiences as stringers and overcoming difficulties picking up certain techniques, like how ZV had to learn the alternate-picking stuff & fast shreddy stuff from Syn, while Syn had to learn the aggressive, down-picking, rhythmic stuff from ZV, how they both adapted each other's strengths despite the different styles and turned it into versatility which enriches their tonal capabilities, and how Johnny needs to grow taller, etc.,

There are older interviews from as early as the CoE days that they talk about the same thing - which only goes to show how consistently motivated they've been as guitarists since then till now :)

You may choose to watch the entire interview from the start, or skip straight to the Technique talks at around the 16:50 mark ;)

Cheers! :rock-hand:

Help

Hello I finally got a custom s. But it feels weird to play it feels like my prs is better or something is wrong with my guitar. When I switch to bridge(synyster signature pickup) it sounded like an active pickup with low battery when doing some lead, but when doing chords its good. It feels like sustains are cut every note, its like playing on a super clean effects on distortion without the sustain. And I noticed something with my sustainiac it doesnt turn on(the harmonics and stuffs) when its full volume in guitar. Do you guys think something is wrong with my guitar its like 2 days old and I changed the battery like 4x

How am I supposed to make the lower and higher notes sound good at the same time?

Oh my poor ears. 😭 (and my neighbours ears perhaps)

My high notes are so sharp in the ears it feels like it's stabbing my eardrums. (Sharp in sound, not note) I've tried making it softer with the toneknob and by lowering the treble and mids. It works a little but it makes the lower notes sound "dull". I can't switch between a riff and highnote lick and make both sound okay.
It has to be an EQ/setting solution I'm missing because drowning it in reverb isn't a good option. 😅

I'm using my bridgepick up with amp distortion and an overdrive pedal.
My settings at the moment are: treble 3/4, mids 2/3, bass 5/6, distortion 6/7, and overdrive Three quarters open. The toneknob on the overdrive is over halfway too.

Learning on different neck/fret/scale sizes VS sticking to one?

I am a beginner who spends too much time on Ebay and likes to tinker with electronics, so I've got my main guitar I'm learning on, a Schecter Reaper, and then some fixer-uppers I'm working on. I bought a beater PRS 245 that had wiring issues that I was able to fix and is surprisingly playable now. I've also got a strat style project on the way which I'm sure my wife will be thrilled by... (Alcohol and Ebay may have been involved...)

My question is this: am I risking bad habits or at least inefficient practice by picking up fairly noticeably different guitars depending on the mood I'm in or room I'm in when I have time to practice? There's a pretty noticeable difference going from a 24 jumbo fret 25.5 scale guitar to a 22 fret 24.5 scale guitar with smaller frets. Simple stuff (ok everything I do is simple stuff but simple even for me) is noticeably different though not night and day different... for example I almost have to use a bar to play an open A chord on the PRS where I can easily get 3 fingers in place on the Schecter. The Strat appears to be a 25.5 scale, but 22 fret, so that may be less of a shift once I have it up and running. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot here, and I'm unsure if swapping around a lot would be helpful or harmful long term. If I had to choose one style the 25.5 / 24 would be an easy choice being more of a metal and rock fan with thicker hands, but in most of my hobbies I like having projects going and variety.

I think I'm not the only person who saw the most recent music is win video on Youtube. It's about dailing the volume on your amp way up instead of on your guitar.
My amps volume is always at 1, I turn my guitar up until after the distortion sets in well. Over halfway open I think.
I had heard about turning up the amp before but just forgot about it. Now I'm curious what others do.

SYN-C - GOLDEN GODDESS - fake? damaged?

Hey guys.

So the Golden goddess was sold out on the store and I had been looking at it for a while. So I was pretty bummed about it. So I went for the dark knight and it was sold out too.
So.
One conveniently popped up on eBay for $2000 CAD. I thought this was strange considering it was listed as brand new.
But I paid with PayPal so all was fine.
Surprisingly, I got the guitar UPS express next day.
Came stapled shut in the schecter box (I have three other syn customs from schecter and a syn special. All came very similar)
Neck was wrapped and to my surprise it was a beautiful guitar.

Overcome with beauty she went right on the wall next to the others. I noticed the fret buzz was a bit strange so I took It in to get looked at. The guys thought it was beautiful at first sight. But called me later and told me they could only set the action super high, which I found annoying.
Whatever. When I got it back I gave her a good play and one on one time.
Plays very well, but not as well as my custom s.

I began to study it and I began noticing quite a few different flaws within the guitar that aren't apparent on my other guitars from schecter that are raising suspicion. The paint is very sloppy in places, uneven and it almost looks like the neck was repainted or cracked or something. The tremolo system seems very off and the binding is somewhat separating from the body at the bottom of the guitar.

I was wondering if you guys could take a look at this and see what you think.

Thanks.

Happy Vets Day! (And a cool meme)

I know it's a day late (and at least a dollar short these days). But being dollars short, I was busy getting my free meals at Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebees yesterday so. even less active on the forums than usual.
But anyway, Happy Dog Gone Vets Day to all who served!!!

On a personal note, serving in USMC 07-15 is actually quite responsible for me being an A7X junkie. I can't think of veterans day and my time serving without thinking of A7X because they were in alot of ways the soundtrack to that generation.

The songs MIA and Gunslinger got a lot of us through those times, and the WTF/CoE/White Album/Diamonds/Nightmare albums were huge among my platoon those days. I remember on the live at the LBC video before Gunslinger, M Shadows says (and I paraphrase for easier to understand meaning) "whether you believe in the wars or not this goes out to everyone serving". Not to be political but just for context: even within the troops the opinion on that decade was very divided as far as foreign policy goes. So it was nice to know that my favorite band at the time was thoughtful enough to have our backs and dedicate some songs to that generation (their generation). Everyone from the devoutly committed career soldier to the young kid who started questioning things but wanted to honorably serve the time that they swore an oath to serve much appreciated that. I was already a fan by WTF so when City and White Album dropped with those tracks it made us feel like somebody was thinking of us and strengthened my connection to their music.

Side Note: Those songs still hold up and always will. Gunslinger is the ultimate underrated power ballad of A7X and MIA is the masterpiece song and the solo that everyone is still trying to learn lol. I think of all the A7X 10-20 minute long back-end of-the-album tracks, I'd put it as their best right after 'Save Me'.

Lastly, here's my favorite military meme and a snapshot of how life was for a lot of us serving in our 20s

How do I disable all emails except newsletters?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I can't figure out how to disable emails from all activity here except newsletters. When I'm in my email, it only let's me choose "emails from x activity" or "all Synner emails from the website completely." I tried looking in my account details and I can't find anything that would be it

Name this chord 🤟

Hey guys, so I was just watching a video of a friend showing his new music & he described a chord he played simply as a 'C minor' - however the exact voicing of notes he played were: C F# G Eb- which sounded amazing - but not strictly a C minor chord, or even strictly from the C minor scale. If you ignore the F#, its C minor, but if you ignore the G and think of the F# as Gb its Diminished - but you can't ignore anything 😂

The full chord progression to give context was : G, C, G, ("C minor")

With the intervals R #4 5 b3- I had the idea of calling it a Lydian b3 chord (4th Mode in G Harmonic Major)

I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas or if I'm missing anything?

Cheers!

THE DIRECTOR’S CUT by Fantomas

:syngates:Happy Halloween family! This months #AOTM is The Director’s Cut by the great Fantomas, truly a great listen in the spirit of the season. This project is fronted by Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle and backed by an all star lineup comprising Dave Lombardo of Slayer on drums, Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins on guitar, and one of my top two fav songwriters of all time in Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle on bass(the other being P Mac).

This album is so fucking cool because Dirty Mike and the boys reinvent some of my fav soundtracks of all time. Classics like The Omen, Rosemarys Baby, The Godfather, and more. In fact, the entire album is a cover album that packs a serious punch. Not recommended for the faint of heart ;)

I’ll keep it short and get at ya in the comments but PLEASE, go listen to the originals after you finish the record. This one is a clinic on reinvention, arrangement, and production. Enjoy.

All my love,

SYN

Synner Songs of the week!

Hey all! Over on the Synner Instagram page (@ Synnerofficial) we’ve started posting a new song of the week each week in the stories. These are unrelated to the AOTMs or anything like that, it’s just a fun thing we’ve begun doing to hopefully inspire some discussions here and hopefully give you some new tunes to check out!

We’re keeping track of them on the “SYNNERs Song of the Week playlist” which will be updated weekly here: Login to view embedded media
This weeks song is “The Heart Collector” by Nevermore! Have you heard the song before? Do any parts of it stand out to you musically? Feel free to discuss and break it down along with the last few previous SOTWs below! 🤘

Advanced Gypsy jazz scales

I figured I'd share with you some of the scales I like to use when playing gypsy jazz. I'm leaving out modes because I'm a lazy fuck

My main ones are the following

Harmonic minor which I typically use on minor chords

Natural major which I uses over major chords (sweet Georgia brown and djangology are probably good examples for just G major scale)

Double harmonic major over dominant chords sounds really good to me

As a bonus I mostly base everything of arpeggios and my go to one are typically m9, basic triads over most chords and diminished and sometimes augmented arpeggios over dominant chords.

Other options you could use are things like melodic minor, super locrion, diminished scale and augmented scale but typically I don't use that often because for whatever reason my ear doesn't dig them so much 😅

Being Back On The Site...

Hey everyone! I just wanted to give a bit of a warning going forward, and I know not everyone will see this but I'm putting this disclaimer up, and maybe the mods or admins can chime in about this....

One of the reasons why I stopped giving feedback is the emotionally charged bag of excuses and ego trip-based responses I'd get in return. No matter how nicely I'd put things or how many great things I'd say, I'd still get excuses and defensive responses. Not everyone did this, but it started to get to where I wanted to say "Fine, fuck it. Keep making mistakes then." And I started to feel like it was a waste of my time. So if you post up a riff, EXPECT CRITICISM IN SOME WAY FROM ME. You can't handle the things I say? I don't care. Suck it up. You're going to hear it anyway. I've never been rude to anyone on here and after having so many private lessons and even spending a hell of a lot of time on another school, I have learned so much that I can't wait to share it with you all.

Now I'm not saying I'm going to be a bitch. And there's a time and a place for criticism. Like if you're clearly a beginner and you're working hard and fumbling through something, or if you've learned something TRULY difficult, you'll just get a big sense of praise from me. But if I can tell you're a seasoned player and there's just some minute tweaks I see you could do, or if you really need help, I'll speak up.

Anyway, if I ever come off abrasive, know that I really don't mean it. I just got fed up with sugar coating things and still having people getting emotional and stepping on my face. So there you have it. If Captain Ed can take my criticism on the chin, you can too.

The End.

When Is It Time To "Move On" With What You're Practicing?

Hey there Synners!

I'd like to hear everyone's feedback about "when it's time to move on." I've been researching and on another school I learned "When you start getting bored, it's time to move on." But I'm not necessarily getting BORED, but I'm practicing a really difficult solo that's well beyond my ability. And I'm caught between "moving on" means "quitting" and "moving on" means "it's no longer really fun."

I've been practicing this for almost a month now. And it's one spot that's about 2 measures long. There's a LOT of fast sixlets in the solo (it's not Scream), and I can play about 90% of the solo up to speed but I really want to be able to do this. But it seems like I'll be stuck on this for years and it'll consume a lot of my practice time. Is it time to move on and do something different? Thanks in advance!

Any good A7X presets for Bias Amp 2/ Bias FX 2?

Hi,

I was trying to find some good presets but well, could not find anything good with Bias FX 2 so I think the best way would be to create an amp with Bias Amp 2 which will get close to what Syn was using.

Did anyone have tried to achieve some good/interesting results with Bias amp 2 and/or Bias Fx 2?
I know that Bias Amp 2 have amp modeling feature but in order to get some good result, isolated guitar track would be needed and it not an easy thing to find :).
